Easy Tongs for Beginners

A collaborative project that Bill Corey and I worked on last Wednesday. Light weight tongs made from 1/4" x 1" hot rolled flat bar. The reins are cut from the stock with either a bandsaw or cutoff wheel and the holes for the rivet or bolt are drilled. The bits are twisted in the vise and do not require fullering.
I show how to adjust the bits for flat stock or modify them for round stock.

I need to get me some 6 x 25 mm flat bar (that would be the closest metric equivalent to 1/4" x 1") , I found a pice of 5 x 25 mm, slightly shorter than in your design, so the reins will be shorter, but that might actually be a good thing since they will be thinner/weaker. I have riveted the two parts together, and tomorrow I will proceed with heating and twisting the bits. I used a combination of a jigsaw and a sawzall, but next time I will probably use a cutoff wheel, as it was a real pain to cut with the sawzall 🤪

i know this video was published a while ago but i wanted to say thank you. I am not a fan of drawing out and am just beginning in my journey. I need several sets of different tongs. this method will help me immensely in making them. I will personally be starting with 1/2 x 1 " stock as I have found that I prefer a chunkier reign, However this method completely removes the necessity of drawing them down from the parent stock twice for each set. now i just need to break the corners and round them out and forge the bit to finish a pair. I should be able to knock out a few pair a day and still have time to do other practice.

Thanks for the great idea. You could move the idea up to intermediate by cutting out the reins and then forging the boss and bits to your specs. It’s a great way to avoid having to draw out long reins or forge weld them on using the drop tong method. Extra bonus: thanks a ton for showing me that you can do long cuts on thin stock using a portable bandsaw table. The whole time I was wondering how you would work around the five inch depth limitation.

New blades help a lot, Yes you could forge the boss and bits. That would work well, especially if you don't have access to a power hammer.

Is the band saw blade twisting when you make that long straight cut? I have the same type of set up, only with a different porta-band, and it looks like my blade will have to twist significantly for the materal to make it past the body of my saw.

Nice tongs. As a word of caution, when twisting the jaws be sure of the direction of the twist. Depending on which blank is on top (left or right) the twist direction is important. If its twisted the wrong direction the jaws will be locked and unoperable. Guess how I know this...lol
