I'm going to be taking an old antique-looking cookery book (don't worry, it's not of any collector's value) and using it as a type of 'diary-scrapbook-journal' by layering pictures, Polaroids, paintings, prints, and typewriter writing over the top. It's like a hidden gem in my minimalist-looking bedroom. Thank you for the inspo!

sort of an obsession for me... lol. Happy creating!
This is exactly what i was looking for! I started a journal to help organize the story I'm writing but then it started turning into a junk journal inspired by this fictional world but it was getting very bulky. So seeing how you constructed these was really helpful! I've been searching for this type of journal because usually people start from scratch, building thr entire book, but it was a little late for that with what I was working with so thank you!

Very Cool Journals! Thanks for sharing!!!
This is SO awesome and full of great tips and ideas wow, thanks so much. I have just about run my catch-all altered junk/art journal into the ground and want to create a new one for the new year/decade. Obviously I wouldn't work in it for 10 years....but anyway thank you. I do like to "work in a book" rather than do a page and consider it done. I go back to certain books to alter any of it continually....and some are more structured. I love my colorful workbooks.

Hey, I have a question. You said that you tore out half the pages. Do you just tear out then leave a page then tear the next one out? Also, do you do that all at once for the whole book or just as you go through painting? & do you glue the pages together to make them stronger?
@CraftingMamas
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Monica, I tear them out randomly. If the book is glued in it usually doesn't matter. If however the signatures are sewn in when you tear out one page it had a sister page( matching page) that will come out as well. My advice is just try it and see what works best for you. Happy creating Aloha, Shelley

Hello I have a question if I add photos into my book do I need to cut some pages out so it doesn't get to thick?
What kind of glue do you use on the magazine pages? They look so smooth.
@CraftingMamas
7 жыл бұрын
I use glue stick and a credit card/ burnisher to smooth the surface out most of the time.
Do you remove all the pages from the book then add your own papers
New subbie here. Love this! Do you have a tutorial on how to alter the book/prep the pages?
@mianotes9868

thanks Shelly for all the inspiration!! recently, my local art guild was thrOwING AwAY (!!!! i know!!) a bunch of books!! I caught them in the act and grabbed what I could manage, (sadly i could not save them all :( SOOO at first I was ready to cut them, tear them, and alter the hell out of them!! I was soo excited! but then I froze!! I cant bare to hack into them...I know I'm being silly...So what advice could you give to sort of , ya know, boot me over the edge? or maybe youve covered this in a video? like how you go about organizing your thoughts over a particular book? I'm definitely over thinking some stuff here...and getting really hung up...do you ever get sentimental over these books before you alter them? example: one rescue book is a ceramic book (I'm a potter by trade) so then I was like Oh snap this info is still worthy so what if its had a palmetto bug dining on it! so I put that one down and picked up the how to book on flower arranging from 1957...what could I possibly find interesting? Nope. the old decor styles and color combinations used in the photos were super cool, they used flowers and foliage i have growing in my yard here in Florida,...I'm caught somewhere between "these books were bound for the landfill just cut them up!!!" and "these are still good books!!" I toyed with the idea of leaving certain interesting portions of the book...theres great tips on arranging and handling cut flowers but how do I choose what stays and what goes?? do you have the same thoughts or do you have a particular montra when it comes to disecting them?

HI Missy, I use Elmers extreme glue stick most of the time. I do use a Aileens Tacky glue sometimes. I find the best results for me where I live is a permanent glue stick. I love in Hawaii and it is humid here. Hope that helps. Wishing you a creative & crafty day! Aloha, Shelley
