Simple & Easy Chicken Curry Recipe For Beginners - Murgir Lal Jhol - Bengali Style Chicken Curry Recipe
West Bengal is a state in the eastern part of India, Bangla being the regional language spoken there and hence the people known as Bengalis. This chicken curry is commonly made on a weekend and since it has very few spices it is relished by people of all ages. You will be amazed how delicious this chicken curry tastes and the potatoes become extra flavorful being cooked along with the chicken.

Ingredients required for making Bengali Style Chicken Curry - Serves 6 to 8
* 1kg/2.2 lb chicken with bones (leg and thigh pieces or a whole chicken
* 6 medium potatoes halved
For the puree -
* 1 large onion
* 1 large head or 11 large fat cloves of garlic
* 2 inch length ginger
* 2 large red tomatoes
For the gravy -
* 1 tablespoon sugar (optional). If you do not want to caramelize the sugar then add 2 teaspoons of sugar in the gravy to balance the flavor.
* 1 dry bay leaf
* 4 green cardamoms (elaichi/choto elach)
* 4 cloves (lavang/lobongo)
* 1 inch size cinnamon stick (dalchini/darchini)
* 1 tablespoon kashmiri red chilli powder/ 1 teaspoon red chilli powder/paprika. Please adjust proportion according to your preference. Add less to start with. You can always add later like I did in the video.
* 1 teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi/holud)
* 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
* 3 whole green chilies (optional)
* salt as per taste. I used 2 teaspoons
* 1& 1/4 cups hot water
* 4 tablespoons oil
Serve this with hot steamed rice with any salad of your choice.

I'm almost finished making this, it smells so good! I made enough to have for tonight as well as for Sunday. Tonight I'm going to serve it with as side of some fried Enoki mushrooms, green onions, and carrots mixed. I didn't add potatoes because I can't have them, but I'm excited to try this! Yesterday, I had cramps due to my cycle and I think I had a stomach virus/bug as well. After eating the Punjabi curry yesterday and waking up this morning feeling amazing (NO CRAMPS, no symptoms of the stomach virus/bug, no nausea) I decided to make another curry for tonight as well! Your other recipe healed me of cramps as well as healed me from food poisoning! 😍

AMAZING! AS USUAL! Very good. Almost reminds me of Caribbean food spices. Only difference is allspice berries are used and no tomato but the taste is very similar. Much different from your other curries.

I am very bad at making sweets, Jenifer and I stay away from complicated recipes but I love sweets. Probably I should start experimenting on making them.
Thanks Bumbi. I am most accustomed to cooking more Northern Indian dishes as my partner is Punjabi. I recently tried experimenting with Bengali style food. Adding sugar is something I have seen a lot of recipes from Bangladesh do, I wanted to ask, after adding the sugar do you stir it in the oil or just slowly allow it to caramelise? Assuming you wouldn't add it on a high heat in case it burns? Thanks!

Sorry to see the sugar joining the grand party. I know you keep saying that sugar is optional but it’s getting a bit too much being added to practically all of your dishes. The other night I walked out of the last Indian restaurant because the sugar was quite evident in the curry. So please try not satisfy the American people’s taste, they are well known in their sugar intakes. Thanks.
