Do they pay separate for the gas? Gas is NOT cheap these days.
I live in Sacramento, CA and did this for about 8-years. Delivering medical supplies and medication to pharmacies for Cardinal Health, McKesson and several other companies. The pay is very good but every company I worked for required me to have a truck with a camper shell or a van. This wasn't a problem for me but I wanted to make this known.

I used to be a dispatcher for a company who did exactly this... Medical stuff. This was in Houston and we have one of the largest medical centers in the world. So optimal situation. That said, what most people don't know about this line of work, is the dispatchers are usually tight with the seasoned drivers and even get kick backs from these drivers, and in return, they are almost always given the best runs. Drivers would come in and be like "I'm working 50 hours a week and only made $750 after my fuel cost". Yup, because the really long runs that go out to somewhere that we know won't have a return run back, are gonna be given to those guys, and the runs going from the hot spots that are close, will be given to their "boys". You can identify these guys real quick if you hang out in the dispatchers officer because they will bring breakfast, lunch or dinner to the dispatchers and even a carton of cigarettes. In some circumstances they will give them cash. This isn't supposed to happen but it does. Also if you "make your own schedule" and show up whenever you want, the dispatchers are gonna give you the worst runs. If you flake out on them, you are gonna get bad runs. If you call in sick, you're gonna get bad runs. Basically you usually have to prove yourself first and kiss a lot of rear ends to get the good runs.

I worked at a hotel as a doorman for a few years near Disneyland. Shuttle/cab drivers would commonly offer kickbacks to bellmen or doormen to prioritize them for airport runs. Taxi drivers or shuttle vans were suppose to que up at a designated place along the street and wait for a hand signal from an employee to pick up a hotel guest. Didn’t take long to figure out which bellman were getting kick backs.

Also, if these time sensitive labs are not handled correctly, as having a cooler, multiple trips a day back to labs, whatever is appropriate, effects lives. A lab courier in our town was having a “bad day” and threw a whole days worth of GYN Office surgical specimens, in a dumpster. Others left specimens in a hot car while shopping, home napping and over the whole weekend. The first guy noted here was visited by the police. Be a grown up, do your job. Show up.

Curious as to how the contracting works in these arrangements and what type of potential liability the independent courier carries in this type of arrangement. For example, who is responsible to ensure that medical supplies/speciments/etc. are packaged and delivered in accordance with shipping requirements (e.g. temperature control, light/darkeness, within XX number of hours, etc.)? I'd suspect that some level of additional insurance coverage may be required for the courier such as E&O? Interested in your experience and guidance.

I told em no, so all the delivery offers that came my way where for stuff that could just be put in the bed of my truck and roasting in the sun in a box wasnt going to hurt it. most the time it wasnt anything bio related in the boxes, it would be crates of oxygen bottles going to various homes [sorta like a amazon route] or a small medical office would order a big rush order of boxes of masks/gloves. usually wasnt anything serious.

It's very difficult to make $2500 a week doing this. I was a manager of a company doing this, I didn't make anywhere near $2500 a week and my drivers came nowhere close. The certification, isn't really a certification. You read or watch something and answer a few questions. It's hardly a certification. The HIPPA is similar to what you get at a doctors office. The bloodbourne pathogen is usually simplistic and if you are short on drivers, you help the applicant out.

How much we talking? Half that? $1,250/wk is still $65k a yr, or is $2500/month more reasonable? Still a decent side gig. Or we talking just a couple hundred and barely covering gas and wear and tear?

$2500 seems kinda high. But i work for a company delivering lab supplies that has contracts with a major hospital group in the Los Angeles area and i drive my own car, am a W2 employee with taxes with held and they offer medical insurance. I work 10-12 hrs a day ( no weekends)and take home about $1300-1400 a week since we get hourly, milage and OT. Milage isnt taxed since its at the fed limits of .63 cents a mile.

...if you're good with $100-$200/week actual income... With any of these driving your own car jobs, gas, maintenance, & abuse to your car comes off the top...THAT IS NOT INCOME!!!!!....then 30-40% in taxes....how much is left for you for your efforts 12 hours a day???...20%...30% maybe??? ...oh, and that car maintenance $$ is just for maintenance...how are you going to replace it with a new car when you burn through a couple hundred thousand miles in a few years and have no car anymore for anything... I love these driving gigs, but using up your own resources to make $$$ for someone else's company is just stupid...if they want a job done from which they benefit, let them get their own fleet!

This would be a great job for me. Everything is right, have a truck and a van, only they are older. They are well cared for, this they still run probably. Any way the company's would review this portion?

I worked for two of them in the past and they looked past the age of my truck, but I had to prove the transmission and engine was at least in their age range. so if you did a recent rebuilt/ overhaul they will want proof/verification of the milage/ date a new crate motor was put in, ect ect.
I was making 1200 a week driving from lexington ky or louisville ky to ohio or tennessee. But you also got to put in mind on your deadhead, break downs, flat tires, fuel, food, tolls, etc. If you got a box truck or a sprinter van, youre obviously going to be making more than using a car/truck/suv
