Easy Sail Rolling - SailZing Tutorial

Спорт

Here's an easy way to roll your sail while it's on the boat. This method prevents wrinkles from forming as you lower the sail, which makes rolling easier and prolongs the sail's life.

In New Zealand, we sail Optimists then P-Class then Starlings, then Lasers. P-Class and Starlings are unique to NZ and have the head of the sail attached by shackle to a stretch-defeating wire strop (which goes into a wire cleat at the top of the mast, and must be pulled down to drop the sail) or wire halyards which attach to ropes of equal (mast-) length at the bottom (to allow the sail to be dropped without having to fiddle around trying to get the wire strop out of the mast head cleat). When we dropped the sails, we'd fold the sail over at the first batten to get the initial roll of the sail. This way the initial roll could be tighter and not affected by the sail's head plate, which this way gets rolled up further down the sail. Of course, you don't want to get the roll so tight as to crinkle the sail, but having a full length batten to start your roll with certainly helps, and it aligns the rolls to the battens (90 degrees to the leach).

Back in port, I always use a 32mm diameter PVC pipe to easily roll up the sail (indeed the boom is a great helper)

That is an MC Scow. Built by the Melges Boatworks of Zenda, WI. It’s a rapidly growing fleet from FL to NJ to IN to MN…

This was filmed on Lake Beulah in East Troy, WI. It’s a beautiful lake in southeastern Wisconsin about 1-1.5 hours from Chicago (depending on traffic).
