Easy Project - Move the Battery on a Polaris Sportsman

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is dedicated to those who want to do more work on their ATV but don't know where to start. Polaris makes a great machine (in my opinion), but some Sportsman models have the battery in a really.... inconvenient, to put it politely... location. In this video, I'll show you how to move it.

When disconnecting your battery cables you should always do the negative first not the positive. The reason for the negative first is that if you touch your wrench to the frame while doing the negative it won’t arc and once it’s disconnected the positive won’t arc if the wrench touches the frame. So negative first positive last and when reinstalling positive first, negative last.

Makes sense. Thanks for explaining it that way.

Thanks ponycarfan. I have the exact same machine. I can't believe where Polaris put the battery. Your video is very informative. I see myself doing the exact same thing in the near future. I have saved your video to help me when I do. 👍👍

Polaris eventually figured it out, and put the battery in the front storage compartment. But, there are a ton of Sportmans out there like this. I’m glad you found the video useful!

When connecting the new battery cables to the terminal block how do you know where to put the positive and negative cables?

Great question. As a general rule, always match red-to-red and black-to-black. Depending on the age of the machine and if anyone has repaired those wires in the past, it's possible that both wires will be black. In that case, you'll need to trace them back to where they came from. A battery cable that goes back to something that looks "electrical", like a starter solenoid, will be the red positive wire. If it goes back to something bolted to the steel frame, then it will be the black/negative wire. I don't recall where the Sportsman's wires go, but that's a general rule of thumb for virtually any engine that has electric start.

Yup! Other manufacturers have hidden the battery in weird spots, too. I think they're all getting a little smarter about that, fortunately. I was at my local Polaris dealer a couple weeks ago, and looking at both Can Am and Polaris, they've all got charging ports now.

The instructions and kit make it easy, compared to a lot of projects I could think of for an ATV. Except for basic hand tools and a willingness to get grass stains on your pants, this can be done anywhere.
