Easy Licks For 'Dark Eyes' - Gypsy Jazz Guitar Secrets Lesson
'Dark Eyes' or 'Les Yeaux Noir', often referred to as the 'Gypsy Anthem', is one of the most important tunes in the gypsy jazz repertoire.
Django Reinhardt recorded several versions of this tune, each of which are mind blowinigly amazing!
I got a question from Mikko Hilden who is a guitar teacher, asking for some easy licks for a student of his to play on his 'Dark Eyes' solo.
Because 'Dark Eyes' is usually played really fast it's handy to have a couple of easy licks which you can play at any tempo.
The chord changes to 'Dark Eyes' are really simple and consist of only 4 chords A7-Dm-Bb-Gm
A7/// A7/// Dm/// Dm///
A7/// A7/// Bb/// Bb///
Gm///Gm/// Dm/// Dm///
A7/// A7/// Dm/// Dm///
Lick1.
This is an easy idea yet sounds awesome at any tempo. You start on the beat and for the A7 simply play an A triad finishing with Bb-A-Bb-A on the top E string.
When it changes to Dm start again on the A and then play through a Dm triad finishing like the first phrase with Bb-A-Bb-A
For the Bb and Gm chords you play the same rhythmical device except starting on the Bb and playing a Bb major triad with C-Bb-C-Bb on the top E string. Bb and Gm are basically the same so the same lick works over both chords.
This is playing the changes in it's most simple yet effective way. AND is manageable technique wise.
Lick 2.
This lick is ninja and I only use it when the tempo is flying so fast that I can hardly keep up! It sounds a bit heavy metal and uses pull offs that create an awesome effect which cuts right through the chord changes.
For the A7 you play it like this:
Pick the E 2nd fret on D string and pull of to the open D
Now pick the C# 4th fret on A string and pull off to the open A
For the Dm you do the same picking pattern only 1 fret up. Easy!
With these 2 licks and ideas alone you can start to really feel confident when soloing over 'Dark Eyes' whatever the tempo.
It's like this for every tune......you just gotta know the moves!
That's what I'm here for ;-)
Have fun!
Robin

    How did I miss this video....? Simple is good - and I even understand it - which means I'll be able to use it (maybe/probably modified) for other things as well. And the appreciation came once I realised that the rhthym is absolutely essential to making it work!

    Hi Robin, GREAT awesome-sounding lesson to add to the collection of your previous genius laden greats. Perhaps you might continue this lesson with another similar set of speedy pull-offs for the subsequent chords in the 2nd set of licks for Dark Eyes similar to what you did with the 1st set of licks over the entire tune? You're my ongoing, total hero at bringing Gypsy Jazz to the appreciating masses like me. Cordially, Bob S.

    In that 1st lick, will that work when the chord is dm6 (because of the natural B in the chord)?

  • @GypsyJazzSecrets

    @GypsyJazzSecrets

    8 ай бұрын

    The 1st lick has a Bb in it not B natural so works for the A7 not the Dm. The 2nd lick has the B natural so works nicely over the Dm. Make sense?

  • @josdurkstraful

    @josdurkstraful

    @@GypsyJazzSecrets Well, in fact not... I don't see you play a lick with a B natural at all. I am talking about that first lick where you play Bb over the dm chord. As long as it is a dm it will work but that dm will often be played as a dm6, hence my question.

    @@josdurkstraful I understand your original question now. Yes so indeed the lick will work over the D minor here. Sometimes I play the same lick with a B natural and also works just different flavors. When you play in a minor key like in Dark Eyes the Bb sounds good. Thanks for subscribing stay Inspired! 🙌
