As a pretty dang new guitar player (under a year) yeah, the "easy" chords are all actually easy. You can master them all including transitions in 3 months if you practice consistently. Even some of his beautiful chords aren't actually difficult to learn and pull off (D7 comes to mind as just a pretty easy chord). All in all this might be one of Ichika's most learnable pieces!

*Comprehensive Harmonic Analysis* Key: Assuming Em (E-F#-G-A-B-C-D) Chord spelling (Bracket = omitted): C-[E]-G-[B]-D-F# C9(#11) D-F#-A-C D7 B-[D#]-F#-A-E B7sus4 E-G-B-[D]-F# Emadd9 Beautiful Chord Voicings: C9(#11) x-C-F#-G-D-x Scalar: 6-2-3-7 Tones shared with previous chord (Emadd9): 2 D7 x-x-D-A-C-F# Scalar: 7-4-6-2 Tones shared with previous: 2 B7sus4 x-B-F#-A-E-F# Scalar: 5-2-4-1-2 Tones shared with previous: 2 Emadd9 E-x-G-B-F#-G Scalar: 1-3-5-2-3 Tones shared with previous: 3 Chord Progression: Simple: bVI, bVII, V-, I Beautiful: bVI9, bVII7, V7sus4, I-(add9) Simple Chord Progression Explained: First of all, all of these chords are diatonic to Em. bVI is the submediant. This is commonly viewed as a tonic expansion chord as the triad (C-E-G) shares 2 chord tones with the tonic (E-G-B). I view this as a tonic area bVII is the subtonic. This is a dominant function chord, although weaker as it doesn't include the V (B). So this is a dominant expansion after the tonic bVI. V- is the dominant. Leads to a classic V- to I- authentic cadence. I- your tonic. Beautiful Chord Progression Explained: bVI9 Adds in the 9 and #11, omits the 3rd and 7th. Both the 9th and #11 are shared with the resolution chord D7. Sharing tones between chords is always a good way to smooth out a progression. bVII7 This chord is diatonic to the E Aeolian mode, which this is. The added 7th (C) is shared with the bVI9. V7sus4 This chord takes the standard dominant(V) and replaces the chordal 3rd (D#) with the 4 (E), which is your tonic(I) note. The designation sus4 always means that the 3rd is missing and replaced by the 4th. A full V7 chord with the 4th added (B-D#-F#-A-E) would be a B11. Note that this removes the tritone relationship that is so fundamental to dominant function and replaces it with added tonic function. I view it as mixing dominant and tonic harmony and creating a smooth transition to tonic. I-add9 Tonicizes the previous chord by allowing the F# to carry over. What was the chordal 5th in your V7sus4 is now the chordal 9th to your I-. More smooth voice leading. Also take note of how the tonic chordal 3rd (G) is in the highest voice but preceded by the F#. This is scalar 2-3 motion, which often plays a part in cadences. Thanks for reading this far and I hope this helps somebody.

This is my approach to acoustic, I don't do my own stuff but have freinds in bands and they have me up for a few songs sometimes. I basically took all the open chords and learned barre chords and other chords higher up the neck and when they play a chord I play the same higher and just arpeggiate it and do Lil fills in-between chord changes. Makes it sound really good with the bands cause I'm just adding an extra layer to what they are already playing and I don't show off Great for camping too, if I find a guitarist I'll just have them play whatever they want and I just support em. Endless music friends this way!

OMG I USE THESE SO OFTEN BECAUSE I LOVE THE BEAUTIFUL "AIRY" FEEL THEY HAVE!!! 😁😁😁😁 That aside, the more basic Emadd9 (from the 6th string up) is 0-2-4-0-0-0, and I like the darker feel to it (plus it's a very moveable form, and can be used to do some really cool low-end melodies). I just found you tonight, and you've inspired me to get back into playing after not seriously playing for nearly a decade. I can't even be jealous, because I see how you play and it feels like what I would've been doing if I hadn't let America crush my ambition.

the juxtaposition is really nice. sometimes the musician community is too excited to always use extended chords when in some instances it's the contrast between triads and extended chords that creates a nice tension and release in terms of harmonic density. in other words i think what makes those chords sound "beautiful" is their relationship to the simplicity of triads. all of a sudden there's a shift towards something more emotionally complex. it's a kind of yin yang of harmony.

I feel like what makes this progression really good is that you start with the basic chords but then all the extensions and notes you add to them makes it sound very interesting. So its not necessarily that the basic C chord isn't beautiful its just that the next chord seems beautiful or interesting in comparison.
