I’m going to add this since Rich Textures Crochet doesn’t seem to be responding to comments about size. Those who say it’s too big, it’s best to chain a length to your own measure. The first chain will be the height of the hat - figure out the height you want and add an inch or so, since the chain will shorten once you crochet into it. This is better than doing exactly the number of stitches she says. I wish she stressed this more, rather than saying the number of stitches. Wool can vary, hook size, tension, so best to measure. You can see the measurements at the start of the video, and also standard hat measurement charts can guide you. I also find that she allows a lot of “negative ease” for the circumference - that is she says for a child, stop crocheting when you’ve reached 15”, but if the child’s head is 20” (standard) that’s 5” of stretch, and if your wool and crocheting isn’t that stretchy, the hat will be too tight. Standard negative ease is 2”. Just stretch it out and see how big a head it will fit.

I wish I had read this comment before crocheting almost the whole hat before realizing it was way too long for my toddler’s head 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ So I undid the whole thing and chained to my own measurement. Much better now.

My hat is about 11” long and 16” in circumference. I could have made it a little shorter, but this way it will fit him longer. (I cuff it up about 2”.) He’s about a year and a half, but he has a pretty big head, about 19” in circumference. Good luck with your hat!

I’m just making a suggestion: when the hat is complete, pull both ends of yarn inside, sew in a button if you want to use a fur Pom Pom, the elastic on the Pom Pom can be pulled thru the top of the hat with a crochet hook, then anchored quite firmly around the button on the inside. No wobbly pom poms. Voila!😉 Sue

I will say I believe the measurements are not very true to size - I had to shorten my chains tremendously to fit the ages properly. I read another comment that talked about this and it helped me alot. Sarah should be more clear about chaining to your personal desire. Nonetheless I used the video to make multiple hats for gifts! I truly love your videos however on this one i tried to make a child’s beanie using the 51 chain stitches and used a 5.5mm hook however it was so long it ended up looking like a robbers mask rather than a childs beanie, even folded up it had to be folded almost all the way to the top and fit on an adults head to be a relatively normal-ish looking beanie. I dont believe this will fit at all on my niece however my boyfriend and i got a great laugh out of the rainbow glitter robbers mask I ended up making 😂

So I made this and only used 38 chains and it’s still way to big for a toddler (per your pattern you said crochet 41 for toddler) so I’m confused why mine was way to big 41 would have been even bigger

Hi, I love the pattern and am busy making it. Question: if I chain 31 sts and begin in the 2nd chain from the hook, I end with 30 sts. Is that correct?

Help anyone….. Does the inches when laid flat mean that is the size before closing it, or after closed? 😢 This a great pattern but I don’t know this part

Hello Kathleen - yes, I apologize! I had it free for a limited time but forgot to change the info on the blog post. I have corrected it but would be happy to send you a free copy of the PDF. I can do it through Ravelry, or via email. You can email me at richtexturescrochet@gmail.com. Sorry for the inconvenience!

You said this was 0-3 months but it measured 11 inches when done. But that's not what the pattern says. I'm making the child size. How long should my finished be?

I did the chain 51 and just realized as I'm almost done and it's 15"long there is no way this will fit my 3 year old grandson guess I'll go wider for a slouchy hat and start over.

I think 46 stitches is too long for 12-24 month size, mine is now 12 inches long but I see in your description it's supposed to be 9

The smallest size will not, but in the written pattern you will find the stitch counts to adjust it. It’s an easy pattern to modify

I’m a beginner beginner and had a hard time keeping up (even with pausing). Your stitches were too fast to keep up and I wasn’t sure exactly where the stitches went sometimes. If you stitched super slowly, I think it would have helped.

I must just be fumble-fingered or mentally challenged as I simply cannot get this method to work. When I come back after doing the SCs into the chains and do the slip stitch and chain one, I am on the bottom of the work instead of the top.

You need to chain 1 after each row or you’ll lose 1 each row. Let’s say you do the child size that has 51 stitches. Once you finish a row you actually only have 50 and your hook will be in the 50th stitch. You need to chain 1 so you can work into that last stitch. Hope this makes sense please reply if you have any questions!
