Easy Calendula Lip Balm Recipe | Calendula Infused Oil

#calendula #herbalism #homesteading #diylipbalm
I have been trying to get rid of big box store lip balm for many years now and have come up with an easy recipe that has worked well for me for the last few years! Calendula is an annual flower that I grow in my gardens every year! It's beautiful and super easy to grow from seed. Calendula has many medicinal benefits and is a wonderful gateway plant to get into the natural medicine world. I use it in healing salves and balms, but many use it in teas and culinary applications as well.
Here is my simple calendula lip balm recipe, which fills approximately 16 small lip balm tubes:
1 oz beeswax, grated
7 tbsp of calendula infused oil (use carrier oil of choice, I use organic olive oil, but almond oil works well too!)
2 tbsp virgin coconut oil
Melt above in a double boiler. Once melted add:
1 tsp vitamin e oil
essential oils if you wish
Pour promptly into tubes or lip balm container of your choice. Let set before use. Remember that this type of homemade lip balm will melt somewhat if it is exposed to high heat, such as being left in a car.

Sounds awesome!! Grating your own is much more cost effective too as those little beads tend to be more expensive.....I think that's an awesome idea for Christmas gifts and definitely some essential oils would be nice as most people do like a bit of a scent!

What does this balm taste like? The calendula scent actually comes through?

It really doesn't have much taste. It's a pretty mild low scented recipe cause I prefer that. I would say it has a soft mild beeswax calendula scent. Hope that helps!

Either should be fine...probably play around with half batches first to see how you like it if you're experimenting with different oils. But generally speaking those shouldn't irritate the lips and should be good!
