So if you’re starting out as a bass player I’m sure you’ll have been told you need to learn your scales and yes, the basic major and minor scales are important when it comes to learning the fundamentals of music. But in terms of stuff you can apply in your everyday playing, it’s actually waaay more important to learn about chord tones.
We play bass lines through chord progressions so it’s important to learn what notes fit with those chords and to do this you need to learn arpeggios.
Today we’ll work through the two most common arpeggios, Major and Minor and have a little look at how they can work in a bass line.

there are some bass teachers that rush through things but i find Mark takes his time and explains things well, great teacher and great bass player!
Mark, you're the greatest. I'm 70 years old and am fortunate that I began to learn the bass 5 years ago. There are many great internet learning tools in the 21st Century, but you are The GOAT for me. Even with all I've learned from you, I feel THIS lesson (though I already learned about appegios from you) will accelerate my goal of being able to play walking bass lines. Thanks, AGAIN.
Thank you for ACTUALLY AND SIMPLY explaining wtf and Arpeggio is and how to apply it quickly
Excellent. Before this I thought arpeggio was something served at Olive Garden! Nicely done as usual!
Crucial beginners lesson. Well done!
This video was actually worth watching two adverts for. Nice one.
Another fine lesson Mark! It's always good to address different skill levels, and this one is a great one for beginners. As you said, so many bass lines are built from arpeggios. And as an experienced players, its always good to go back to the basics and get a refresher. Cheers.
Listen to this man bass players. Do not sleep on chord tones.
Love this type of content
Good job Mark🎶🎶
Best beginner arpeggio lesson I have found, thanks.
Thank for your video. I am excited to learn bass this is my first time trying to learn any music and Iam in my forties and I have had a head injury. The doctor told me music can do amazing things to our brain he encouraged me to take lessons in something musical.
Thank you. You efforts are appreciated.
The BEST bass teacher
Awesome lesson thanks 😊
THE BEST! Thanks Mark!
Thanks for explaining straight and direct to the point. I have enjoyed it so much.
Thank you!!
Thank you Mark for yet another great vid.
many thanks for this video.
Thank you for such a clear explanation of arpeggos and how to practice them.
These lessons are actually helping me to grow as the guitar player too. We're learning scales, but not much people are teaching how to break them and use in specific cases.
Good lesson. That sounds great.
Thank you.
Amazing video.
One of the best "maestros"
Thanks! Super interesting and helpful :)
Thank you Sir, its great things !
Mark, I could listen to you all day. I just wish my fingers would stretch like yours do so I'm not so clumsy. Thanks for all your fantastic videos!
the best teacher
Good brother 🙂
Clarity plus; thank you!
I never realized I could just do the minor 3th on the same string as the root note. This whole time I've been playing it on the same string as the 5th but now the minor arpeggio is a lot more easier
Also good for designing bass fills.
Thanks Mark! I bought Chord tone essentials course in the Halloween sale! First course after Bassic Fundamentals for me. Next I suppose to eat training or sight reading over scales? 😂 scales…
You are perfection in your formation.
Is it crazy to say that I am learning the bass and know nothing about theory but while playing the bass I already play along with the root notes doing some arpeggios without even knowing I was doing it right, watching this video makes me happy bcuz I love the bass and I always thought theory would be really hard and would slow me down. But it’s the opposite
What kind of bass is that? I really like it.
I know the answer is "PRACTICE" But I M much faster just using my index finger to pluck the strings is it normal for a beginner to have a slow middle finger. I would appreciate any tips, suggestions or exercises to help develop more speed with my middle digit
great lesson. why does my left wrist feel completely broken?
I know my comment is very late so I won’t be surprised if I don’t get a reply but I’m just confused about the f major arpeggio since you cannot go down a half step on the A string because F is the first note on the E string, if you understand what I just said you’re a genius because I explained that very badly
Love the look of that bass...what is it ?, please.
hey Mark what do you mean starting with the middle finger pluck helps with navigating the strings? what’s the difference between middle and index i didn’t understand

All I hear is "one step beyond" by Madness 😅
I really wanted to understand this video but once he got to the chord progressions, I got totally lost. Just showing the names of the chord progressions did not help me understand anything after about minute 9. And I’ve got about four months playing under my belt. I wish there were diagrams explaining where the notes are…
Please, stop shouting at the thumbnail! 😄
awesome job
