I love my Quilter's Slidelock. I have the long and the short. They are MVP's in the sewing room. I'm right handed; I measure from the right and butt my QS to the ruler to the left of my measuring ruler and cut along the right edge of the QS. It is safe and stable.

I would just use a yard so you have extra in case you mess up

I can't hear either, I turned up the volume and added a speaker and could not hear at all, and the lighting is not great either, your technique seems great
