I had a sales guy bring by a splitter from a local shop to demo in my wood yard and he was bragging about it would split anything. We rolled out some Sycamore we had been struggling with and he said no problem. He tried running it through a 4 way and it got stuck like Chuck. I handed him the 10 pound sledge and he beat on it for about 15 min to get it off his splitter lol.

Sycamore is easy to cut and looks nice but it is hard to split. When I was younger, there was nothing I couldn't split with my 15 lb. monster maul, EXCEPT elm and sycamore. I used to quarter the big pieces with a chain saw and then split along the growth rings. It splits OK with a single knife but I am sure it gave the box wedge a workout. Sycamore burns great if kept dry but is more work than it is worth

Sycamore is a tree I leave alone unless it has fallen somewhere and must be cleaned up. I like using it for carving wood because of its grain structure. I have not milled any yet but think it might make so good looking lumber

It has a beautiful ray fleck. Not as pronounced as oak but it is there. I have been told it like to twist badly due to the grain structure. A friend of mine has experience milling it.

I am blessed to have a pallet mill just down the road...Any Sycamore logs either are sold down there or thrown on the burn pile! It isn't even that good of firewood once dry and just hard on equipment. If you are actually determined to split it up? Then my suggestion isjust use the single wedge and work around the edges. It maybe a seem slower but not after getting this NASTY stuff all plugged up in a 4 way!👍
