East Somerset Railway • A visit to Cranmore Station • Steam Heritage Railway

The East Somerset Steam Heritage Railway is easily found in the south west of England just south of Bath, outside Shepton Mallet. My visit today starts with Cranmore Station and then extends on to Mendip Vale by steam train. A visit to the loco shed and watching the loco drop its fire at the end of the day was fun too.
I hope you enjoy watching it and feel that you have tagged along with me during my visit.

Well!! U really thought that you would know what the 'round thing' is. It is of course.............. a mechanical potato masher. Receive perfectly mashed potato after just one run up and down the line!! Add steam heat and the potato is cooked to!! Regards, Paul.

A rather wet afternoon was brightened up by the steam and sounds making a great atmosphere along the line. Thanks again for your comment. Any guess at the cylinder thing under the carriage? Fun suggestions welcome ;) Cheers, Warren

You mention that the Ivatt you were riding behind spent a little time at the Isle of Wight. The Ivatt Trust as Quainton Road donated three Ivatts: two tank engines which are doing good work on the railway. Because the Isle of Wight has never had any tender engines running on their railways, a swap was made: the Ivatt tender engine went to East Somerset as you saw, and the sole surviving E1 came to the Island where it is awaiting restoration as W2 Yarmouth, one of four E1s that worked mainly on freight trains until 1960.

My earlier comment seems to have disappeared. Censored?? I'll try again! My first thought was inspired by your, obviously necessary, trip to the outside loo on the station platform. So could the mysterious container be a piddle pot? After all, even though people were far less keen to talk about such bodily functions years ago, the necessity was still there...... Second thoughts were more related to what the manufacturers would have thought important at the time. So how about a ladies' hat box? Or a tea urn? Or if the carriage happened to be 'lower class' then somewhere to sweep the spit and sawdust? I then realised that some people at that time may have been interested in other matters, such as staying alive and I investigated brakes. (I know it's cheating but Google comes up with the answer every time) I found this site lmsca.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/LMSRAVB.pdf and page 21 shows a diagram of the offending item: a vacuum brake vessel. So there it is, the answer to what is in the vessel is............ nothing.

Hey not censored, not anywhere I can see, sorry. Thanks for commenting. Ha but, now then, a "piddle pot". Interesting idea. I would like to see the sign above on how to make use of such a device. Cheers, Warren
