Thanks for finding my video and pressing play!
A lot of people don’t know that East Midlands Trains run a few trains to and from Leeds. On a Saturday, it’s possible to take the single morning departure at 0634 and head slowly to London via Sheffield and Nottingham. There’s also a full English breakfast served at your seat.
This trip cost me around £30, and although I have a railcard giving me a discount, if you book far enough in advance you too can avail of such a cheap fare, even if you don’t have a railcard.
Most British train operators don’t offer a proper service in first class at the weekend but thankfully EMT do. It’s a fine service although it doesn’t have the polish of other trains like the GWR Pullman (have you seen my video on that yet?).
Overall though the very poor ride quality made eating and drinking more difficult than it should have been - a real disappointment. Plus, a hen party were upgraded for free into my carriage (they were friends of the guard...) and this spoiled the otherwise peaceful ambience of the second half of journey. Oh well!
If you want to find out more about my future plans and join in conversations I have about travel, follow me on Twitter: @pauls_trips. I’ve started using it properly now and it would be great to see some of you there too.

Hey guys! Sorry for the brief hiatus on this channel. Back up and running 😀😀 after a very hectic few days travelling around the Balkans. Here’s the list of trains which offer Saturday Breakfast on East Midlands Trains: www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/travelling-with-us/on-board/first-class-to-london/#First-Class-Weekend- (scroll halfway down and click “First Class Weekend Service”).

There's a reason why very few people get the EMT to London from Leeds - Virgin Trains East Coast offer very cheap tickets if you book in advance and they cut 90 minutes off the journey time.

I loved it Paul! I really envy you Europeans with all the trains you have available. In Brazil we destroyed most of our railroads in the 60's and 70's in order to implement the car industry. We then started building more and more roads and highways throughout the country. Today our railroad system is insignificant! Thanks for uploading!

ecoRfan yep. One of the best trains to ever serve the UK railways in my opinion. It’s a shame to see them go as they get replaced by newer trains from brands like Hitachi, but that can be justified by the fact that these *were* made over 40 years ago, are slower than the newer trains, along with the plan to electrify as much of the rail network as possible

Very reminiscent of Greater Anglia First Class. I generally find East Midlands to be quite bad. I'd much rather take Virgin to London in that sense. I completely agree with fellow commentators regarding the loud people in First Class. To be honest, regardless of class, people generally seem to be oblivious of their effect on others. A very individualistic mindset among train travelers in this country. This is why travel on Japanese trains is so nice.

if you live in derby Sheffield or Nottingham how would you take Virgin without adding an hour to your journey travelling across from Mainline o mainline? Maybe EMT/MML is a rough journey because the Government spend all the money on the east coast and west coast, so they're smoother and faster and electrified!! I'm lucky to live on the west coast and do use Virgin or LNWR but I feel sorry for the people of the east mids who clearly get treated like second class citizens. EMT should stop at St Albans, the amount of civil servants who live there would start to make money available then

I mean just being loud on public transport in general is considered rude in many places including Denmark where I live (sadly the youth seems to not care about that because of their rebellious American attitudes. But I distinctly remember a case when I was on holiday in Italy. My family had taken a day trip from Venice to the Garda lake and on the return trip we had to change from the high speed train to a local commuter train on the last bit into Venice. It was about 8pm and On the station a group of 3 American girls (age 20-30. You could hear they were American on their accents) stepped on board into a coach with about 10 other people in it and started talking very loudly, as in you could hear them from 2 carriages away. Everyone who was in that coach left and a good majority of them in the coach next to them (where I sat) left too. Me and my family decided to confront them, asking them to be quieter and be more mindful of their fellow passengers, but of course they didn't care one bit, because oh they ha dot keep yelling to each other about how Jeremy cheated on their BFF back home and how the Ice cream they instagrammed about looked like it was unnatural because the vanilla was yellow, my god was that the worst part of the trip or what!

It's all a part of the legislative mess that we were handed in the privatisation of the industry. De-Regulation is very much a weekend incentive to get folk to try the product. Sadly, The Great British Public are still unchanged. They just seem to dress better (?)

Michael MacDonell weekend first was a British Rail invention. It dates from the times when companies were happy enough to pay for first class and therefore there was little in the way of bargains. This meant that the first class carriages ran almost empty on a weekend so they decided to offer weekend first upgrades. Personally I’d rather weekend first is now scrapped so that we’d get the same first class service on weekends as on weekdays. As you can now get bargain advance tickets the weekend first concept is now outdated.

Save East. I paid £10.00 to upgrade on GWR from Swindon to London on a weekend afternoon, and was only person in the carriage. Second class on a Saturday evening is horrible as full of drunken idiots and worse if there had been a football match, but suppose their only option to travel

East Mids Parkway.... know the place well, along with Ratcliffe-on-soar Power Station..... just before you go through Redhill Tunnel, is Trent Lock (Sawley / Long Eaton), all of which I get to see pretty much every day from my flat near Sawley Marina. Maybe an idea to alert folks to the large upgrade work hitting Derby Station between July - October, and what it means for trains calling there... Cross Country are being diverted between Burton-on-Trent and Chesterfield, via the back freight line, passing through Castle Donnington, Sheet Stores / Trent Junction (Long Eaton, pretty much just before Redhill Tunnel), and on via Toton towards Ilkeston, where it will follow the same route as the Nottingham - Sheffield services, to Chesterfield. EMT will generally be running as near normal service as poss, with some being re-timed - Rail Replacement. www.derby2018.co.uk

Thanks Paul, for the great video. I’ve experienced a similar ride quality experience on the VTEC HST from York to London. As all suspension components are replaceable, dampers, coils, air cushions etc., it can only suggest that the trains are not maintained to acceptable standards. There is plenty of life left in the HST sets despite its age, setting new standards of ride quality when introduced and extremely quiet at speed. Therefore, it’s a shame that things have been allowed to deteriorate and this can’t be put down to the age of the train. I also think Network Rail have to share some of the responsibility here, too, as track quality is definitely not what it used to be either.

As a student currently studying in the Midlands, the HST are brilliant to ride on with quieter carriages and better ventilation compared to the 222s, and I frequently delay my journeys by half an hour to get the HSTs. The doors with sliding windows are great too, as there is proper fresh air if you need it (Not to mention that it is very amusing to watch people panicking over where the door handle has gone :P ) I do like the fact that you have added the precise time to the video, as indeed punctuality is an aspect that travelers are looking for. However, you may consider using a different layout or using a different font to it? Oh yes, and #Teambrownsauce :)

I hadn't even considered EMT for my London trips - Grand Central is the closest, given they stop at Low Moor - but after the video, I'll certainly look at booking on the Leeds St. Pancras, next time I go into London. Incidentally, the age of the stock is immaterial - the ride quality on the Grand Central class 180, I came home from London on last month, was so bad the steward could only fill my tea cup to about two thirds full because it slopped over if filled any higher.

Well, I'm on the 06:33 Leeds - St. Pancras at the moment. Unfortunately, it's nothing like as good as Paul's trip - there is no cooked breakfast, due to (what appears to be) a shortage of staff. To be honest, I can't say as I'm massively impressed, given I'd deliberately missed breakfast - knowing there was a cooked service on that train - and I'm hungry now. The staff have been coming round with hot drinks and biscuits, but that's no substitute, when you were expecting something more substantial. I think this might be my one and only time on this train and I'll just go back to travelling in by Grand Central in future...

There were menus out for the complimentary breakfast, but they were snatched away while we were sat in Leeds. Looks like I'll be suffering a Burger King breakfast in London 🤢

Great video as usual Paul, the first half sure was bouncy during breakfast. First Class carriage looks nice, properly better than Amtrak here in the US. Beard looks distinguished on you.

Hey them seats are classic. They bounce on every bump. I know...I used to work them as a Train Manager at Nottingham and Derby for 16 years.

The bounciest seats of all were on the old A stock trains that ran on London Underground's Metropolitan Line. Wow they were bouncy! ...London Underground scrapped the trains several years ago, and now have newer trains with continuous 'open' style from one end to the other - no doors between carriages. The seats are also very firm, and not bouncy at all :(

Great Video! Its a shame about the poor ride quality! usually HST MK3 coaches are lovely and smooth, must have been a fault such as a wheel flat. Could have even been because you were near the end of the consist or even just rough track. Ive never travelled with East Midland trains but would love to in the future.

I took an EMT class 222 Meridian between Sheffield and it was poor ride quality, probably the tracks. I was sat in first class near the front though but that usually doesn’t affect anything? Heard the Midlands Mainline is getting renovations anyhow.

Juliette Bravo PR / Moderator 222’s are a lot more comfy to the HSTs on the MML, but it’s not the trains issues, it’s the track quality.

It's the track, when a mk3 is riding rough like that you know it's overdue for relaying and probably should have been under a TSR

Not just the Leeds train that is HST, Been on a few of them from Derby to London, that start at Sheffield, that was HST. Also, the East Midlands trains timetable, downloadable from the EMT website, shows which train it will be. As for ride quality, they aren't as bad as some trains, but not a patch on the newer EMT trains. The last one I went on was a nice smooth ride, dunno if it had anything to do with the recent upgrades along the Leicester to London line, run by EMT.

Time wise VT East Coast being the obvious favourite, but as you said Paul, for price & Full Breakfast Service offered, EMT is a most viable option! Giving that Hen Party a Free upgrade, bit of a mistake by onboard staff, would've thought?

Great travel report and video as usual! As a student currently at Loughborough I travel on EMT very frequently- first class fares can be picked up for peanuts with a Railcard if booked in advance. EMT are one of the few operators who specify which rolling stock you’ll get with each service (either the HST or Meridian) on their downloadable timetables - I always try and get an HST, purely as the first class is much more comfortable and the meridians are unbelievably loud, also shaking you to bits if your sat over the engines. Obviously HST’s don’t have this issue, but I would recommend trying to sit in the Centre of the MK3 coaches, not over the bogies. The ride is significantly better! The EMT MK3’s don’t seems to be as well damped as GWR’s? Although I’m not sure what they are doing with their MK3 stock in relation to the 2019 accessibility regulations - they’re not modifying them like cross country are, can anyone shed any light on this?

You're just about the first British person I've ever seen take a train from Leeds without hating on the station. I don't get why so many people don't like it. I mean, sure, it's kinda just a big barn and there are better looking stations; it's no St Pancras or Glasgow Central, but I've taken trains from it and it's totally fine.
