Hey LaToya!🥰 I hope that you're having a fabulous time in LA! As a fellow medicated shampoo user, one thing that helps me really focus it on the scalp is to use an applicator bottle with an angled tip. I only put the amount of shampoo into the applicator bottle that I need to use for a single wash each time that I use it (as opposed to dumping the entire bottle of shampoo into the applicator bottle). I add a tiny bit of warm water and gently shake it to make it easier to apply directly from the applicator to my scalp.

Great tip!! I typically use the applicator bottles for protective styles, but I might try it for a regular wash day. Thanks!

I've had a stylist tell me steaming isn't good because it can cause heat damage over time. Another told me it was fine to do and that stylists have steamers in the salon, which I already knew. Personally, I err on the side of caution and don't do steam treatments. Mostly pure laziness kept me from even buying a steamer because I didn't want an extra step in my routine. Looks like the next style is twists, but I'll wait and see.💜

I’ve never heard of that before - steaming can cause heat damage over time….At this point we can’t do anything without causing damage lol! Truth is, everything causes a little bit of damage. I steam my hair once in a while and I love the way it makes my hair feel. At some point I let go of the rules. I just want to be happy and not make my hair the center of my life. 😌

@@LaToyaEbonyHair So true! I can deal with a bit of mechanical damage, but I don't want to deal with heat damage. My hair isn't very fussy. As long as I shampoo, condition, and detangle every 5days or so it's happy and gives me no problems. lol

Hey gal. I have that steamer, which when I bought it umpteen years ago they somehow only charged me $25. Still have it and use occasionally. Curious: have you used any Mielle products? My hair has taken to them wonderfully and I legit haven't had to actually detangle in a couple months. My hair is the most manageable it's been over a week since I chopped in 2012. Just hoping I don't get hooked and then face formula changes. lol I know I mentioned NaturAll some time ago, but I think my hair got over what I found good about it.

There has been a lot of talk on tik tok of ppl relaxing their hair because they claim to be tired. Many persons have blamed natural hair influences for leading ppl to believe that wash day requires hours of detangling and using tens of products although experts say that a simple process is workable. Do you feel that you may be seen as part of the community that has been perceived to have misled black naturals?

  • @LaToyaEbonyHair

Great question. I can’t control a person’s perception, but I don’t believe I have. I’ve shared my experiences from my big chop in 2010 and how my hair journey has progressed. Some Wash days are simple and others more experimental with multiple steps. However I’ve always tried to let everyone know WHY I’m doing what I’m doing and which steps are optional. So ultimately no I don’t think I’m being perceived as misleading naturals. I try to keep things super simple.

Just to add another perspective. I maybe spend 3 hour wash day every 10-14 days compared to looser or straight textures who may have to do a wash day maybe twice or more times a week spending 1-2hrs each time? I’d rather take the time and do my hair wash routine biweekly especially if I wear braids or crochet hair styles then can go longer by just keeping maintaining scalp care & minus the relaxer chemicals. Idk do the math but estimate minimal 3hrs vs 6hrs biweekly depending on texture and routine?

Got to love how some people or those disappointed at how their natural hair came out, always blame the natural hair community for everything under the sun. Maybe people should start looking at themselves and stop following every trend /influencer blindly. If they don’t want to have extra steps in their routines they can . No one is in their bathrooms’ checking. People have to do the work for themselves and sift through the good from the bad tips and information especially when it’s relatively free. If they don’t want that then they need to pay for a service that’ll do the work for them. There are good and bad people on each side and just because stylists have a degree doesn’t mean everything they say is correct. Especially the one note type of stylists.
