    Intestinal Distress was left out because the level was made specifically for that version. Sega offered to lower cartridge costs in exchange for a new level.

    The problem most likely was that the SNES uses PCM samples for EVERY single instrument. That's why the had to cut out so much stuff when porting over the game.

    Game vs Game That's basically the entire argument for why people say the Snes has better sound. Because it uses REAL INSTRUMENTS. But don't listen to that argument! 90's game developers didn't have their own orchestra to sample instruments from... Most Snes game samples are probably from synthesizers anyway.

    Subscribed! :) As a overly obsessed EWJ fan, I have to say you did a great job! In addition to what you mentioned, the SNES version has some glitches the Genesis version didn't (like being able to kill Peter), and the in Level 5 amoeba tubes have less tubes active. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of these. I was actually starting a similar set of videos (though it was only me talking, not nearly as nice as your video!) but I haven't made any videos in a long time. Excellent job, looking forward to more!

    Actually the SNES is significantly less powerful than the Genesis. The SNES is more advanced, with a larger color pallette, and support for transparencies, stuff like that, however, just speaking of brute force CPU cycle strength, the Genesis takes a fat dump on it. You can see examples of this in games like Thunder Spirits/ Thunder Force 3, Mickey Mania, Samurai Shodown, Pit Fighter, or Out of this World for some examples. Games like Earth Worm Jim, The Hulk, Lion King (pretty much all multiplatform games) run in lower resolution on the SNES, which besides visual differences actually effects gameplay, because you have less screen space to see what's coming, resulting in blind jumps or "cheap" enemy hits. That's why 9 times out of 10 I would prefer to play the Megadrive/Genesis port of a 16-bit game. I don't understand all the hatred and bias towards Sega. The Genesis was a great system and both the SNES and Genesis are great systems with amazing libraries of games, and strengths/weaknesses towards each other from a hardware perspective. People these days just like to take a big fat dump on Sega and put the SNES on a pedastool. Why? You don't see this with PS1 vs. N64, besides N64 being the more technically advanced system, it's less talked about because PS1 was more popular so there isn't any bias like there is with Genesis vs. SNES. Not to mention that the Genesis was quite popular if not even moreso than the SNES back in the day (at least in USA). I just don't get it...

    The only reason the Snes outsold the Megadrive/Genesis overall is because Japan just completely ignored the Megadrive/Genesis. The Snes is vastly overrated.

    john lowe That 1 great game to every 4 thing you wrote is completely made up. Sticking with facts here, the Megadrive/Genesis had more games. About 150 more overall. That's a win for the Megadrive/Genesis.

  • @RetrOrigin

    +john lowe What cramped screen? the SNES actually runs at a lower resolution than the Genesis (256x224 on SNES vs 320x240 on the Genesis), so it's the other way around. Also thos legendary titles aren't really that many and most of them are J-RPGs, which don't really appeal to everyone (I can't stand them, everytime I try to play Earthbound I end up yawning like crazy and turning the thing off)

  • @RetrOrigin

    @RetrOrigin

    8 жыл бұрын

    john lowe That's purely opinion. Also there's far more than Phantasy Star and Sonic for the Genesis. There's Gunstar Heores, Comix Zone, Splatterhouse 2 & 3, tons of Shoot 'em ups, Ristar, The Adventures of Batman and Robin and I can keep going on and on. If you don't like J-RPGs, then Breath of Fire and Final Fantasy simply mean nothing, but that again depends on your tastes. Just play and enjoy whatever you like without forcing your opinion into others.

    The loading time is because of how many cycles the coding requires from the cpu which would have had to been rewritten often with more lines of code to load faster. Because of this genesis ports to the snes take longer to load. The genesis had a fast processor which was used to do tricks to improve the graphical capability to keep up with the competition. However it's graphics suffered significantly. The snes has a much slower cpu but Makes up for it by having unique graphical fairs and modes that actually did not use the cpu to do. 3d effects and transparency among many other features were handled by the graphic capabilities in the snes and left the cpu alone where it had less code to actually process with the games. When earthworm Jim was ported to the snes they took advantage of the extra capabilities but left in code that was now demanding of a cpu. Therefore it takes far longer to run the code in the snes and to begin the game. It was simply not optimized when ported due to time constraints. This is common. Another example would be Mickey mania. It has the same issues even to the point where the cpu is being taxed to perform graphical tricks the genesis version did with its vastly faster cpu requiring the hand to drop to load lines of code that could have been replicated using the special capabilities of the system. But with time constraints they rushed it.

    Strange that you said it had load times. There are no load times at all when I played it on the Genesis. At the same time, on thing that never gets talked about is that the music glitches at the beginning of New Junk City when played on certain models of the Genesis. That sucks and that's the case for me.

    I was sort of looking, but they always go for ridiculous money. I bought it on auction from Japan sold AS-IS and non-working. I got it for a good price, shipping cost was more than the TV, lol. So it was still not cheap, but I was able to fix it up and get it going for less than half of what a working one goes for. It was pretty rough when I got it and I had doubts that I would be able to get it going. I had to use every bit of the troubleshooting skills I've picked up over the years and had many long nights on it :)

    While the Snes had many advantages over the Genesis its a urban myth that it was more powerful hardware. The Genesis had a more powerful cpu at a much higher clock speed. This is why certain games was superior on Genesis like sports games or shooters where the faster fps made smoother game play with much less slowdown. I owned both as a kid and loved them both but for different reasons so close I really didn't have a favorite.

    Great video a sub well earned, I never played much of Earthworm Jim back in the day don't know why it just for some reason never appealed to me much for some reason or another and really wish I had gave it a go back when I was a kid because it looks like I missed out on great looking game. After seeing the the Genesis version up against the SNES version it has to be said the SNES version is a very very lazy port with missing sound effects, reused sound effects and an entire missing level. The SNES can pull some great music off you just have to listen to FInal Fantasy III/VI's amazing soundtrack to notice that but in my opinion it has nothing on the Genesis for the Streets of Rage soundtracks by Yuzo Koshiro to this day I am still amazed at how he got that sound quality and performance out of a sound chip that in most games sound horrible and tinny.

    The reason of many genesis games with "bad music" is not because the chip is "bad" (quite the contrary in my opinion), it's becauset FM synthesis is complex, and americans weren't very good at it generally using amateur sound drivers, with the exception of guys like Tommy Tallarico, Howard Drossin and John Baker. From this: /watch?v=6TSj1WePTtY /watch?v=DedCATrcsfY /watch?v=eja9CQ8PUfc to this /watch?v=rHZd97zVe7Q the difference is HUGE.

    The Megadrive version cart definitely used some funky tricks as some of the graphics actually top that of the SNES version despite them having more advanced graphics hardware in this game. The space tunnel scene actually has transparicy's in the blue on SEGA which is normally a SNES thing. If SNES used a special chip it would have probably whooped the Megadrive versions arse but on normal chip hardware this is going to be a close call as Nintendo also has it's better aspects. The Megadrive CD version I would give the edge over both of the non addictional chip hardware versions. Maybe it's not as almost head to head as I rememer it being. Megadrive seems to win it all round.

  • @GamevsGame

    Daniel Cordell i was trying to figure out the tunnel actually and I'm trying to remember that far back now but I thought I had concluded that it looked dithered as well, but that was just based on my own recordings and observations. i couldn't track down any background rips or anything. whatever the case, haha, yes i agree the Genesis version is the way to go! i haven't played the special edition yet on the sega cd but from all reports its just as you say, it takes everything the genesis version did right and made things even better!

    Hi! Great video. I decided to watch all of them in time order. Pity for me that I cant turn subtitles on, because I..."lose".. some words here and there but...maybe it could help me practice😅

    Im sure the slower load times on the snes has to do with the lower cpu clock speed. The snes has a 2.68mhz processor and the genesis has a 7.67mhz processor.

    Did the Nintendo have a higher resolution than megadrive?

  • @GamevsGame

    @GamevsGame

    9 жыл бұрын

    Nichita Bailuc nope, the SNES can output at either 256 or 512 horizontal resolution while the Genesis is 320. the SNES had very few games that took advantage of it's higher 512x448 resolution, EWJ was not one of them

  • @parallaxcraze958

    Game vs Game The few SNES games that use 512x448 it's mostly for static screens like title screens; menus etc... & in the very few cases of 512x448 used in-game then it comes at some costs like fewer displayable colors (cf. RPM Racing). While the Mega Drive has like 80% of its library which run in 320x224 & some games use its interlace mode 2 = 320×448 & this without performance loss (cf. Sonic 2).

    Night Driver thanks for the clarification, the only examples i could find of the SNES in the higher resolution were menus like you had mentioned, wasn't aware of the limited color pallete though.

    The MD version is obviously better. There are frames of animation missing from the Snes version. Of course the definitive version of Earthworm Jim is the Mega CD version.

    Take it from a guy who beats both Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 on hard mode a lot, EWJ2 is harder. 'Puppy Love' is even more tedious. 'ISO 9000' and 'See Jim Run, Run Jim Run' are merciless.

    I wouldn't give graphics to the SNES version. The stretched sprites and brighter colors bother me. Also, i feel like the Genesis version is "snappier" with faster animation.

    Imgema fair point. the stretched sprites and cramped spaces are the killers. i've got to go back and rewatch what exactly i said here, but the technical advantage is definitely on the side of the SNES.

    Game vs Game Yeah, SNES version does use more colors but it's about how they are actually use these colors. The better color choices and better contrast still make the Genesis version better in my eyes, despite the smaller number of said colors and dithering. SNES version does have better backgrounds though, although Genesis version has better "foregrounds" so that kind of evens out things. Also, the snappier animation and correct aspect ratio that have already been mentioned add to the pile. I'm also pretty sure that the SNES version has a bit of a lag compared to Genesis. Maybe it's just me but Jim feels faster and lighter in Genesis version but a bit slower and heavier in SNES. I wonder if that feels the same for others as well.

    The Snes version is excellent, the music is great - believe me I never played it and thought "Gee, I'd like to hear a few more voice samples" or "Gee, I wonder if they could add a short extra stage here?" I'm happy that you prefer the graphics on the Snes but everything else you mentioned is trivial - both versions are THE SAME GAME at the end of the day

    i think you're kind of missing the point. of course they're both great, they're both earthworm jim. but the whole concept of this show is to highlight what is different between each version. missing level, extra graphical touches, etc...
