"Earth Angel" was recorded HERE, in the garage behind this house.

The release of "Earth Angel" on Dootone Records was the launch of what became known as "doo wop" music. It all started when The Penguins recorded "Earth Angel" in Ted Brinson's garage in South Los Angeles. Tom visited a shrine to some of the greatest music recorded on vinyl.

Porky Chedwick was a DJ in Pittsburgh in the 50's on radio WAMO 860 on the dial. He was one of the first DJ's to flip this record over and play "Earth Angel" the B side of the record. Thank you Porky for giving us kids in the Burgh this wonderfull song.

Note that " Hey Señorita " is clearly in the R&B (rhythm&blues) tradition. But the 'B' side " Earth Angel " is something new; " Doo Wop ". Rarely do we see history being made so clearly. And it started on the West Coast too, a style made famous on street corners of East Coast cities!

Tom,This is so great. We need more of this. Even for those of us who may know the stories, there was something so wonderful about having you show us the actual site...a place I've imagined a million times in my mind over the years.Brian McFadden, author "Rock Rarities for a Song" and "Rare Rhythm and Blues on Budget LPs."

Nice story but west coast R&B was going on before this, the Robins, little esther on Savoy, later on RCA and spark, shirley and lee on Aladdin from 52 on, specialty records marvin and Jesse, the Hollywood flames from 52, in 53 the flames on swingtime records recorded " I know" a song which earth angel "borrowed" heavily from, modern records "recorded in Hollywood", RPM, ebb, records, money records, cash, Dootone, not not a single plaque to commemorate anyone of the record companies. Many great recordings by many great artists came out of LA in the late 40's and the early 50's all but forgotten now except for a few collectors and music history buffs.

Doo Wop music DID NOT begin here. There were numerous up tempo Rock N Roll songs dating from the early 50s. The first well known song where "Doo Wop" was clearly enunciated was "When you dance" by the turbans. Not the launch of Doo Wop but certain the real anthem of Rock N Roll and probably - along with "In the still of the night" was the most famous song of its genre

Perhaps Tom could have said, "On the West Coast." Nevertheless, "Earth Angel," this simple, melodious recording, was revolutionary, for reaching the National Top 10. When almost all music by Black People was segregated, it was remarkable for this to be picked up on a tiny, independent label. Chuck Cecil was a Los Angeles Disc Jockey, for many years. His show was, "The Swingin' Years," covering about a 20 year period, from 1935 to 1955. During his program, he'd play the Top Ten on the date of his show, from one of those years, say, for example, 1945. When he reached the mid ~ `50's, Chuck would dutifully play, "Rock Around The Clock," and, "Earth Angel." I also collect music, a lot: The Orioles recording of, "Crying in The Chapel," was also a National Radio Station Pop hit. Music is always evolutionary, sometimes revolutionary. Would, "Crying In The Chapel," simply be a great vocal by a, then, contemporary group, or part of, `early doo ~ wop?' YOU decide! 😁
