I remember reading a buyer's guide on these, which was emphasising that a bottom end rebuild would be very expensive: you've said the same...any particular reason it's so? Is it just parts cost, or is it complexity? Or both...😂

Both parts and labor. It is very time consuming so if you do it yourself it is a different story. The bottom ends of these engines are tough. Short of major oil change negect the only lower ends I have seen fail is due to valve train failure.

My w116 had that engine. I sent it to the salvage yard because I didn't know what I had.
