Good to see you in the gully this morning. It’s been raining so much in the northeast that all I can do is tend to my 30+ houseplants 😅 I finally started my seeds too. I purchased the Big Begonia seeds from Swallowtail after seeing the success you had with yours. I’m excited to see how they do. Have a great weekend!

I need to clean up the one hellebore plant I have that’s flowering. It’s a dark one and wish I had lighter ones. I’ve reseeded from the mother plant in other areas. Those are still baby size. Those hairy weed plants are awful!! I’ve been pulling them already, as well. Ugh! You have to either turn your birdbath bowls upside down or take them in for winter so they don’t break, unless you’re going to put a birdbath heater in it for the winter. We have a few “composting” areas in our woods edge for yard debris too. It’s good for the soil while suppressing weeds and is better than burning it. Sprinkling baking soda over it helps break it down sooner, controls any odors and is beneficial overall.

Hellebores are so beautiful but I had two of them for about 15+ years, and they started to not look well with dark spots on the leaves, so when I wanted something new I tried to dig them up and man what a chore! They were both next to each other and they were both huge. Over 2 feet across.. try digging 2 holes around 2 to 3 feet across and 3 to 4 feet deep trying to get all the root system. The roots went down to China I swear, and so many of them for one plant. I put Knophia(Hot Poker) plants in their place and to this day I still get a leaf or two of Hellabore within the plants in the spring which I just have to try and snip them without cutting the Knophia 😆

Hi Jess. My hellebores are glorious this year. I got two varieties… Merlin & frostkiss. They are quite tall. I only cut the old foliage if it gets brown or tattered. Otherwise I leave it alone. It makes the plant look more full. Here in my zone 7 they stay evergreen.

I had a hellebore that was planted too deep and it was dieing a slow death....I popped the shovel under it and stuffed some soil under it, and it made all the difference....might be why that one of yours looked a little rough....just a suggestion.

you don't have to, but this time of year when the new growth starts to pop up, then the old foliage starts to look bad so i always cut it off. Makes the rest of the plant look better and healthier
