Early Protestant Missions to Jews, Muslims and Pagans: A Dangerous Model

European Protestant and evangelical Christians did not have to look far to find ‘infidels’ in the 16th and 17th centuries: as well as the ‘pagans’ of northern Scandinavia, Jews were scattered across the continent and Muslim powers were all too close.
This lecture will consider the repeated, and repeatedly failed, attempts to convert these peoples: some naively well-intentioned, some openly violent. Those bitter experiences would become a crucial lens through which Christians viewed global missionary projects, sometimes with unexpected consequences.

Indeed - I’ve seen all his lectures (available here), and the ease with which he discusses his topics really make it a dream to follow, even from someone who is non-native english speaking and non scholar.

Let's hope there's some "young Alecs" who can continue this excellent scholarship in years to come. Thanks Gresham, thanks Prof. Ryrie.

Reasoned, balanced, storytelling that advances a thesis. What a pleasure to listen to, and a challenge to all of us who teach.

Excellent presentation. Please note, however, that Paul in fact never states that ethnic-religious Jews will be converted as a whole after the majority of gentiles come into the fold. He makes it clear that ethnic Israel is not coextensive with "true Israel" (Rom 9:6). Next, "all (true) Israel" will not be saved, he says, until those gentiles destined to salvation are won (Rom 11:25-26). This is probably best understood as meaning that the harvest of the Jews will not finish ahead of that of the gentiles, but that both will finish simultaneously at the end of the present age and the dawning of the kingdom (Rom 11:15). An almost irresistible tendency to substitute the word "then" for the word "thus" in Rom 11:26 is what leads many commentators astray.

Great talk. The why, is power, control and ultimately fortune. Essentially it is an industry, in some situations, an extremely lucrative one.

Engrossing lecture by Prof. Ryrie as always! With his usual brilliant sarcasm, he rips apart the hypocrisy of the religious-the more ardent their beliefs, the more brutal their practices.
