In the aftermath of the battles of Yarmouk and al-Qadisiyyah ( • Early Muslim Expansion... ), the Rashidun Caliphate continued its conquests and the Arab armies moved into Iran proper, Egypt, Anatolia, and North Africa. The remainder of Iraq, Syria, and the Levant was conquered in this era. This video features the late campaigns of Khalid ibn al-Walid, as well as the battles of Ctesiphon, Alexandria, Nikiou, Jerusalem, Sufetula, Heliopolis, and Nahavand. We also attempted to describe the early Muslim armies that fought against the Byzantine and Iranian forces.

    37:45 *A significant piece of detail here:* Umar, the ruler of the Muslim Empire, traveled to Jerusalem, not with a royal entourage of servants and guards, but with a _single servant_ and _one riding camel_ . During the journey, Umar and his servant took *alternating turns* ; riding the camel and *walking* . Umar wore simple, coarse clothes; *none* could have distinguished between the *ruler* and the *servant* . As he approached Jerusalem, it so happened that the servant was on the camel and the Caliph was walking alongside. The servant had pleaded with Umar to ride instead, but he refused. Someone had earlier advised Umar ibn Al-Khattab to wear luxurious robes befitting of a Caliph entering Jerusalem, his replay was "we derive our strength and status from our faith in Islam, and not from any dress."

Hannibal at the gates of Rome and the battle of cane is popular in history. Yet many historians agree that 1 historian who wrote about it 70+ years later and no archaeological evidence support it, means it likely never happened or was embellished. Viking mythology is another 1. It was all written by a German who never visited Scandinavia almost 100 years after the end of the Viking age. A lot of written history isn't exactly objective fact.

    This is how history lessons should be taught.this turns history from boring subjects into interesting and engaging stories, while containing valuable information.

    The thing is that modern lessons are build upon student interaction students are supposed to form the basis of the lesson with teachers giving input. If you want story times we are back to lectures from the front of the classroom which is besides the point. Videos like these or the teacher telling stories can only be part of a lesson. How much do you still know from the video now that one month is passed? information retention and the development of competences are often less with videos or teaching from the front. Also these videos have the inherent benefit that you chose this topic and to watch this video. This means that you have an inherent interest. It is quite often the case that the same topics are seen as "boring" by others or even the same people just in another context like school since it is culturally expected that school is "boring" teachers" have way more work to do to win their "audience" over.

    Yup, always good to read between the lines though. We often forget alexander the great was both merciful and brutal. He oversaw the enslavement and murder of many in his conquests, but conquered a huge empire. But later historians often chose to make him a hero.

  • @carpediem5232

    @carpediem5232

    2 жыл бұрын

    @X73RM Well the muslim expansion is part of the current curriculum in all states I am aware of. On top of that comes that fact that the topics for history lessons are pretty much all eurocentric and that there simply isn't enough time to go through all of history in detail.

  • @carpediem5232

    @carpediem5232

    2 жыл бұрын

    @X73RM That's from the "Kernlehrplan NRW" "Sachkompetenz Die Schülerinnen und Schüler • beschreiben die Begegnung von Kulturen im maurischen Spanien als Beispiel für ein gelungenes Miteinander von Christen, Juden und Muslimen, • beschreiben die Begegnung der Kulturen während der Kreuzzüge unter Berücksichtigung des Alleingültigkeitsanspruches der Religionen. Urteilskompetenz: Die Schülerinnen und Schüler können • beurteilen und bewerten die Kreuzzüge aus zeitgenössischer christlicher und muslimischer Sicht sowie aus heutiger Perspektive." So there is room and and the encouragement to talk about aspects of the golden age of Islam. It is not that in depth, but no topic in history really is that in depth in school. And compared to other cultures like the Chinese, Hindu, South East Asian, African or precolonial American cultures, the history of Islamic culture at least is mentioned and discussed.

I was really amazed how you could combine all these battles and events in an interesting way and a perfectly accurate chronological order, putting in mind that it all happened in a relatively narrow period of time and a vast geographical range with one of the most complicated and crucial times in the history. Giving the fact that i'm a muslim, I even gained much more knowledge about this part of history than I have ever gained during my school history classes for 12 years. It’s amazing to me that both the men after the passing of the prophet with many years have been such successful generals in their military campaigns

Look at what the arabs, greeks and romans have written about the Deylamite warriors, they considered them invincible. Since when have arabs been great conquorers or warriors? Never

    @Roads Were Meant for Journeys When I wrote about poetic culture, I did so as an academic who's published in peer-reviewed ranked journals on the subject, so I take exception to the blanket 'ahistorical' dismissal. Arabs were Bedouins, and vibrant oral traditions among Bedouins and nomads is hardly something to be contested unless you have proof to the contrary. Regarding Philip the Arab and the Palmyrene empire, there's far more established literature that justifies, explains and studies the formation of Islamic religious heritage in the context of Arab culture without attributing it to Roman or Christian influence. Similarities between all Abrahamic religions prove a common eschatological framwork, not plagiarism as an often imperially-geared orientalist movement would suggest in making it a point to try and disprove, undermine or dismiss a faith group. Something unique to Western discourse on Islam. So what's your point bro, and please be specific if you want to have a discussion.

There is an entire excerpt/narration of what occurred when Umar first stepped foot in Jerusalem, and he was met with admiration and surprise. Additional info : A lot of these records actually fit the Roman narrative as well. The Roman citizens were also the one to testify that the Rashidun conquests were almost bloodless outside the battlefields. EDIT : It seems that the author might've confused the Umar from the Pact of Umar II with Umar Ibn Khattab

    I think this generation of men was nothing short of incredible. No formal military training, yet consistently excelling on the field of battle. Literally, “Companions” of the Prophet (pbuh), reminiscent of Alexander’s favourite unit. The unique ability to accept anyone into the fold of faith even after a battle, and the role of laws of war and equal citizenship helped them significantly in battle. Also, expanding so far with such slow communications makes all of this all the more impressive strategically.

    Almost all of the warriors are volunteers, and many of them are ascetics. Their commanders, among them also political leaders, are always the most pious, always participate in combat, and the most hardcore of ascetics. They are voluntarily poor as they love to donate all of their personal wealth to the cause of the state & its people, and at times would go on to routinely fast with only the sustenance of unfathomably little provisions. The Rashidun Caliphate armies do not need the kind of recruitment/incentivizing, feeding, and maintaining that all other armies need, and that is because of their impeccable faith. It is a difficult reality to fathom, as us people of "modern" times have grown comfortable with lavishness and abundant amenities. P.S. yes there were still wealthy merchants during their rule, as their empire is relatively prosperous. It is just that they cannot abuse their wealth to acquire power (like how the modern world is now), and the appointed leaders are selected based upon the merit of piety, wisdom, and knowledge. So much so that most of them (the leaders) are compelled to practice incredible degrees of asceticism voluntarily. Their empire is practically led by individuals with superhuman willpower and wisdom.

    @@rav9066 , I strongly believe,that your sentiment has being shared by Billions and Billions of others people (Muslims and maybe even non-Muslims like you,throughout history); Khaleed Ibn Waleed (RA/رضي الله عنه) was really treated worse than a slave , as he was brought back to Medina with his hands tied with his own turban ! Look at how this phenomenal and extraordinary commander ( the best and the greatest commanding general in the history of the universe, after the last prophet and final messenger, MUHAMMED (Salutations and Blessings be upon him /صلى الله عليه وسلم ) , was literally and figuratively pulverizing in rapid motions , the two greatest empires of the then known world , through myriads battles, with much inferior numbers of troops , , and with much inferior armaments/weapons! He even defeated the Muslims at Uhud ,before he reverted to Islam ! Khaleed Ibn Waleed was truly the sword of GOD ! The main reason , I believe , Omar (RA / رضي الله عنه) demoted him, was because Omar detected a nascent form of veneration towards Khaleed Ibn Waleed (RA), and Omar (RA) hated the cult of personality,and he didn’t want the people to think that all the myriads victories,that the Muslims were winning simultaneously against both the Roman Byzantines Empires and against the Sassanids Persians Empires,were due to Khaleed (RA). Omar (RA) wanted to smash this nascent veneration and cult of personality in its bud ; Look at how even nowadays,the Shias venerate Ali (RA) , even tough his leadership was marred by enormous civil strife, various civil wars , and societal frictions and malaise in Medina , that Medina has never known during the period of the last prophet and final messenger, MUHAMMED (Salutations and Blessings be upon him /صلى الله عليه وسلم ) ,or during the previous Rashidun Caliphates; As a matter of fact , some Shias nowadays venerate Ali(RA) as a god , ASTAGHFIRULLAH! @@gordonbryce Westerners, because they have no history, want to show Iran as weak.The Arab invasion of Iran is a lie and has been proven😂The Iranian army converted to Islam and then the Sassanids, the Samanid king, was formed under the supervision of the Arab caliphs.Betraying the Arabs. Later, Nader Shah appeared and went to India and rescued the Arabs from the Ottoman clutches.😎Who is the flag bearer of Islam now? Iran😎 If it were not for technology, the Iranian revolution would have been registered under the name of the Arabs. The mullahs also have Arabic clothes, right?🤔Today, Iran was conquered by the Arabs because its religion is Islam and its leader is a cleric.😂😂😂Salman Farsi was one of the most loyal companions of the Prophet, who was a thoughtful brain
