Interesting note on the totality of “soup bowl” helmets and a battle where they would’ve made a tremendous difference. Huertgen Forest, Fall 1944. Six American Divisions churned through that charnel woodland from September through New Year, 1945. The trees exploded with 88mm air burst shells. Raining shrapnel onto the shoulders etc of all personnel in the target area. The soup bowl brim (as worn mere miles north by the British and Canadians) would’ve saved many lives just as they did in the trenches of WW1.

Only difference was in the steel shell, made of different steel, otherwise liner and chinstrap were the same

Shell maker’s mark ‘WD’ could be William Dodson & Sons of Birmingham (1938-1941), not War Department. Nice original helmet. Cheers!

Thank you, I found ane early Mk2 helmut in my dad's shed and you have identified it for me. It is original and painted red. I think it was for a fire warden maybe.

Great video as usual.I have a MKII 1942 GSW made Canadian with a 7 3/8 1945 liner and original paint inside with later green paint outside. Probably never issued.

Interesting video and nice to see an unmolested helmet rather than restored. May also be worth mentioning that the size is usually marked on one of the fibre cross pieces. Interestingly, all shells were the same size unlike German helmets which had quite a large variety of helmet shell sizes, each of which would accommodate two liner sizes.

Thanks Simon! Really interesting and to-the-point. Do you have a airborne helmet? If so, it would be great if you could do a video regarding one. As always, really good quality and well presented video. Many Thanks again! However, I am wondering where's the matchlock musket gone!! 😉

Did they make a all canvas liner which was just an array of canvas straps? One of the second hand stores I go to has a helmet which is tan, very rusted, much of the paint chipped off which looks like a British helmet but I just don't know enough. can I send photos to you?

Great vid as always. I have an early war helmet but it’s got a texture that makes it a bit bumpy, I was wondering if it would be more accurate for infantry at Dunkirk if I sanded it to be smooth then probably paint it in the correct early war colour?

There were orders issued within the 1st BEF around Sept/Oct 1939 (If I recall correctly?) that all steel helmets were to be repainted in matt, textured Khaki Green No.3 paint on the exterior if they weren't matt finished already. Factory applied matt, textured paint on the exterior seems to have begun sometime in 1939 by at least some manufacturers. Images from around the Dunkirk period show overwhelmingly matt exterior finishes on steel helmets, though some shiny examples can be picked out, but they seem to have been by far the minority by the time of evacuation. The factory applied paint in use at the time seems to have varied significantly from mid brown to mid green depending on manufacturer, and sometimes the same manufacturer at different times, so other than what the Army prescribed for repainting or refurbishing helmets "in house" there wouldn't really have been a specific early war colour, but rather a range of shades and finishes, depending on who made it and when.
