Think of your favourite franchise. Done? Okay. Now think of its first instalment. Whatever it is you’re thinking of, be it a book or a film or a game - that first incarnation is kind of… weird, isn’t it? I mean, in comparison to the rest of the series. Often it takes a while before a franchise really figures out its identity or the rules it’s going to operate under.
This phenomenon has a name: early instalment weirdness. My favourite procrastination trap TV Tropes says it best: “the first instalment is like a prototype. The first rough draft for a book”. I think early instalment weirdness is very charming a lot of the time. So today, I want to discuss a couple examples, and in doing so, come to a conclusion about why it’s actually a really good thing.
