Huge thanks to Mr. Ruhren (and Jim)!! What a treat to be given a private tour by such knowledgeable professionals. 😁👍
Doug is a lovely tour guide. Very informative!
J.C. Raulston was such a kind soul and we were so gifted to have him here with his monumental horticultural abilities. Around 35 yrs ago when I didn't have a dime to my name, he let me sit in his classes for free and let me take cuttings from the garden too. With your passion, drive and knowledge you are following the path of the great one. :-) :-)
I so enjoyed this video and thank Doug Ruhren for sharing his wealth of knowledge with us. I hope to get to the arboretum the next time we are up that way. I, too, love to visit gardens in the "off season" when you can really see the bones.
Love the flowering trees.
Love the tree video, Jim! Would love some more of these whenever you can. Thanks for the great content, as always.
Wow! What a treat! So many great ideas & one more reason to visit the arboretum in all seasons 🌳
So glad you covered the first blush cherry even though it wasn’t in bloom. That lovely columnar habit is not always easy to find for small space gardeners!
Beautiful
Love learning from Doug!
Love magnolias trees and flowers. I learn more about them to day. Thank you so much Jim putnam.
Wow, fragrant Camellia! 🤠
Wow look at the early bloomers❤ Thank you for this video

Thanks for watching!
Such a pleasure to listen to Doug, thank you Jim for the content.
Thank you for another wonderful video. I wish I had the space for some of these trees. Absolutely gorgeous.
Great timing on the video - I saw some magnolias blooming while driving around the Raleigh area this weekend and thought - "man, I need to get to JC Raulston this week!" Think I'll head there today!
Thank you both Doug Ruhren and Jim. A lot of information and beauty in this video !! Magnolia trees have always been my favorite spring flowering tree. They sometimes get a bad rap especially in the urban neighborhood landscapes - homeowners saying the blossoms don't last long, they fall of in wind, etc. I still think they are the most beautiful flowering tree... ever!!
Oh, it seems that it would be so much fun to be sitting on a couple of acres vs a suburban 1/4 acre lot. So many beautiful tree possibilities!
Wow. I am always amazed at the knowledge of your guest. This man is wonderful!
Great to see our spring flowers starting up! Here in Houston our Redbuds are starting to bloom! Spireas will be next.
What a wonderful video, Jim! I have a magnolia stellata, Royal Star, that was a birthday gift 30+ years ago and a sweet bay magnolia that was also a birthday gift. I have planted several different magnolias throughout the years but these are the only two that remain and I thoroughly enjoy them. I’d love to have some of the cultivars you showed in this video, especially the stellata chrysanthemumiflora, the pink star magnolia!

That tree is so amazing!
Such a great collection of magnolias and plants in general. I've been there so many times. Awesome video, so much to learn from Mr. Ruhner.
Wonderful tour!
So good to see examples of these wonderful flowering trees. What great interest for your garden this time of year! Another great video
So happy to see all the info on trees. I am looking to add a few to my space and this helps a lot! Thanks!
As always a great and informative garden tour with wonderfully knowledgeable guides
That was a great tour. Now I know how to pronounce our ‘Jelena’. Cornus mas blooms right after our yellow Hamamelis. Beautiful yellow colour in winter.
I wished I owned a park 🥰😂🥰 Thank You Doug for sharing these stunning trees 🌳
I love Magnolias. I have planted 3 Stellatas and 3 Soulangianas in my past. I no longer have any. One of my local garden centres 'Newmans Nursery' at Tea Tree Gully South Australia has a hillside covered in both Magnolias, Camellias and Azalea.. Just beautiful. I should drive to the cul de sac where I planted the 3 Soulangianas to see if they kept them and if so how they are doing x. I planted a lot of trees at that property about 20 years ago. All the ones that can be seen down the side and out the back are huge, the property is right next to a small reserve that has a running creek during the rain. One of the trees was my 41st birthday present from my parents... Has gorgeous fall colour x. Thanks for the memories x 💚🌳🌲🌻
Loved the video! Thank you very much. Magnolias arm one of my favorite trees

Same here!
These Hort Pro videos take me back to college when we all talked horticulture in Latin and appreciated things like the difference between a shaggy barked and smoothed barked cultivar. These also remind so fondly of the various quirky personalities of our professors! Loved the shout out Sunday to the Missouri Botanical Gardens website, by the way. MIZ..

Thanks for watching! Doug is great
I asked about magnolia stellata after Sunday's Q&A, and you have already answered my question. They are one of my favorite trees. So pretty in early spring.
The Cornelian Cherry blooms here in zone 5b before the forsythia and if the ambient temperature is warm enough, it's a major bee attraction.
Great video! Learned that there’s way more diversity in those types of trees than I knew. Love that garden! Always manage to visit it when in the area.
Loved this, Doug is a wealth of knowledge. I’m hoping I might be able to find one of those Mary Christian camellias one day!
So instructive!! Thanks to both of you awesome tour!!!
Loooooooove magnolias!!!
I’ve wanted a Star Magnolia for my small yard…this intensifies my plans! Thanks 😎👍🏻
Awesome educational video. Love to see what is blooming at particular times of the year.
I love my tulip tree. If the weather is right here in Georgia it blooms beautiful. But some years the weather gets do warm in February that it blooms before Valentine's day, be blooming along with the daffodil's. Too many times tho when it's in full bloom, we have a drop in temperature ,like this year. It dropped into the twenties one night, an it hurt the blooms. They turn dark, then black. Even when the large leaves come on, the blackened blooms are hard very hard, and hang on forever. Love the warm weather in February, but it hurts plants. Especially fruit trees. It was warmer days in February than in March this year. Temps are so up and down. I would rather handle cold temps all during February, and let spring come on in late March. That way blooming trees and fruit trees could have a chance to not get killed by frost. All these trees are beautiful. We see them all in Georgia.
Great video -- lots of ideas for things to add to my property to the extent hardy here. If you could please add information about hardiness zones, that would be great. Also very interesting info re geology/evolution.

I found that interesting as well.
Great video Jim! I appreciate the discussion of evolution, geologic time, and glaciation. It’s very important that people learn this stuff to understand the world and life in general. It really puts into perspective how transient life is and how little of time humans have been around. Plants, fungi, and bacteria are the true masters of the planet.
Great video. Really enjoyed hearing about all these trees.
Eagerly awaiting my deciduous magnolias to flower. I predict by the end of the week they will be blooming.
Loved the video and showcasing flowering trees....I have a Cornus mas variegated here in zone 6a Washington in my "hell stripe" on the street.
Great video!
This was really enjoyable👍👍
This was good content Putnam, well done
Great info Jim.
Another great video!!
Fabulous!
fantastic good video, great news ! keep it going !
Love this video.
Great video! Looking forward to more tree content ! I'm actually looking for a statement tree for my front yard, that's fairly devoid of trees. I'm on a good sized corner lot that gets a good amount of wind, so sturdy is a must. If you have any suggestion on trees to look into, I'd be very appreciative!
Thanks!!
Ahhhh my favorite 😍
Wonderful and informational video, Jim! Thanks so much for doing this series. I am located south of Raleigh in Fuquay-Varina. Any leads on nurseries that carry any of the varieties you mentioned? We have a 1 acre blank slate front yard and these would be beautiful additions.
Thank you Jim and Doug. Awesome trees. Jim, what would be your favorite deciduous tree for urban areas (atlanta)? I'm looking for a shade tree that thrives in southern climate. Would you ever consider planting a weeping willow? I do have a large yard and willows are one of my favorite trees. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Your videos are extremely helpful ❤

Weeping willows are pretty short lived typically. Live oaks, willow oaks, black gum, seedless sweet gum, white oak, sourwood, hornbeam are a few
What would be a good early blooming understory shade tree. I have a dieing dogwood in shad that need replaced. Im in 7b outside of Atl. Love these videos
Would love to hear what zones they would grow in.
Need tips on amending clay soil for existing shrubs that are smothered by landscape fabric😩 Some have died
I love the magnolia maudiae! Are there any nurseries that sell it or eternal spring?
Should one prune suckering growth and internal branches on magnolia stelattas?
This was a great video, Jim.. Any recommendations on the soil preparations for these magnolias? Are they good for down south (Texas) weather ?

They are pretty dang hardy. I wouldn't go crazy with anything. A little compost is about all I would do
Jim can you recommend any places to purchase some of these winter flowering trees in the raleigh area or an online source? Thanks for any help.
Hi Jim, I live in Raleigh and have a Vulcan magnolia that I planted 3 years ago. It has never bloomed...any ideas or advice?
I have loebneri "ballerina" and it gets zapped almost every year.. a little disappointing. My witchazels however just keep on delighting.
I would never get those magnolias because they would bloom to soon we have saucer mag in peoples yards and sometimes the blooms get ruined by frost, sad. but they do get pretty big. I have a later blooming magnolia, dont know what it is called it is more upright in growth and gets the pink flowers in late april, it was a replacement for the butterfly I had that did not make it. I think it might be a galaxy, since that nursery has those. I have a little gem, and a bracken brown beauty whcih I protect in the winter, right now they are covered with a clear tent and small heater in there so far so good will be their second year inthe ground and protected over winter (I am ne ohio) they bloomed alot last year. the little gem is staying small, I have had it (in a pot in the house) for several years before putting in the ground, it has not grown much, my braken brown beauty when it gets to big I will probably have to build a permenant greenhouse around it. will have to wait and see it was over 6 feet last year, but the pvc pipes I use for the frame gets pretty high when I bend them over to be the support for the tent.

Couldn’t find the picture magnolia tree anywhere on the Internet. Is that really what it’s called?
Are there any sweet bay magnolias there? I have been wondering if they can be kept a smaller size. I wanted to add it as a host for the tiger swallowtails.

Yes, they have several. JC Raulston was a big Magnolia collector
Great video! What is the cultivar of the darker purple flowered magnolia?

@@JimPutnam I loved this one too, and a quick google search didn’t turn up any for sale. I’m hoping to hit the nursery this weekend. I don’t expect to find it, but maybe they will know how to get one.
👋😃
I had a large magnolia put n my yard. In November. No buds no flowers . Its large leaves waxed green large thick leaves. Why aren’t the ones around here flowering. 8B

That sounds like a southern magnolia. Those don't bloom early
