welcome back! do we have any data on when Chinese goldfish breeders first encountered the 3 mutations you outlined from the painting - the split lobed tails, telescopic eyes and the loss of dorsal fin? additionally, the appellation 'ranchu' when do breeders begin to use that term? both china and japan had extensive and sophisticated beurocratic systems government oversite well before the Ming Dynastic Era and given the elevated status placed on the goldfish by this time in their development documentation like breeding records, royal household inventories, gift registeries of the various noble houses and even import/export documentation from pre-1400 records likely contain highly detailed descriptions of various fish characteristics - has anyone ever done a deep dive into those sources to compile that kind of data?

I love learning about goldfish history! Their family tree is also very interesting to me. Do you know where celestial eye goldfish came from, since they have large eyes but also lack a dorsal fin?? i think a genetic study might have shown that the mutation for no dorsal fin happened multiple times, but i might be forgetting.

Hi *Juliet* , Celestial goldfish *first appeared in 1870* (Qing Dynasty) in the Forbidden City, Beijing, China exclusively for the imperial family. You are probably right about the dorsal mutation. One of my classic *Chinese Goldfish Books published in 1904* clearly defined *two types of celestials:* (1) *Celestial Fish* , no dorsal fin, smooth back like today's celestial goldfish, and (2) *Celestial Dragon* with a dorsal fin

If this goldfish paining is real, Chinese goldfish history may be rewritten such as when egg fish created, and when three-lobed tail appeared.
