Thank you for a very informative video for many years I have used an digital tuner but after watching this video I'm beggining to become more accomplished at tuning by ear. I find that playing the violin is mostly about ear training.

Absolutely! Violin playing is more about ear training than anything else. At first it is hard, one has to start somewhere. I am really gald my video has helped you with this!

I was super impressed by the logical approach when I watched this video the first time but saved it, seemingly not well enough - just had a mad panic to find this/the series again. So adding a comment to say thank you for sharing this - Absolutely love the approach and I will make it my new tuning method. Thank you (and a belated thank you from the first time I was impressed with this video!) Merry Christmas! :)

Excellant! I have allways had great difficulty tuning my great grandfathers violin. I lost it forever. I bought a reasonable replacement and have decent strings and scale length.my question is what if the stringset is delicate and the windings pull away at A-440? I like a 410 because the voice of a favorite female vocalist seems to match. Should I still use Philharmonic A 440 or am I allowed diapasion normal and use A-410 to protect the windings from pulling apart? Thank you for any help.

In principle you can choose whatever A you like. You just might have difficulties when you play with others and/or work with tutorial videos since apart from baroque violinists everyone tunes to something around 440. If your ear is used to 410 that could be a problem. Strings should be able to handle 440, they are all made for that. If it is the strings that are giving you problems you might want to show the violin to a violin maker. There might be something he can do about the set up and the pegs.

Noticed that you use a short sound on the tuner. you don't put it on a drone and than try to match. Also, most of the tuners, apps or the piano . They are not 100 % in tune. I think its more you try to match as good as you can? Even with a professional, sophisticated tuner showing .0 Hz it can take a while to have it closely matched and that's with fluctuations of the bowing (And your string is of quality and age). The issues start when using different drone notes (like F#,C...) and the Hz numbers are different in Pythagorean, Equal and Just tuning system. Can only hope you'll make a detailed videos on overtones, intonation. To know which ones one should be able to hear and how to find them. What to look for and what NOT to look for. Thanks for you videos Vivien.

Yes, the point is to remember the pitch. We have to train our pitch memory. That is better than matching the note to a drone-like sound of the tuner. I am planning a video (or probably several videos) on more advanced intonation going into all the details. It will take some preparing because intonation is complicated, depends on context and it is hard to get my microphone to pick up the overtones.

Every beginner in overtones will need time to hear the main overtone. But it would help if he knows before how this main overtone sounds and how he can find it . So he can look out for it. Looking forward to your videos! Hope you can show us much more in depth the world of intonation. thanks for ur reply
