Eagle Scout Selby Chipman addresses volunteers at Scouting America's National Annual Meeting

Selby Chipman, a member of the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts, addressed more than one thousand volunteers at Scouting America's 2024 National Annual Meeting.
Selby is a recipient of the Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke Scholarship, offered by the National Eagle Scout Association. She’s an active Venturer, Sea Scout and assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 219 in Oak Ridge, North Carolina.
As a student studying biomedical engineering at the University of Missouri, she still makes time for Scouting.
“When I was going through Scouts, there weren’t any role models that were women who were Eagle Scouts,” Chipman says. “I really want to take what I learned from Scouting and mentor all of the younger girls who might not have someone to look up to.”
And Chipman’s involvement in Scouting extends beyond the shores of the United States. She's spent portions of her summers at Camp Alpine, the Transatlantic Council’s summer camp experience at Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland.
To see Selby’s passion for the movement is to truly see the present and future of Scouting. Learn more of her story at blog.scoutingmagazine.org/202...

My daughter is the first Eagle from the first girl Troop in our town. She also started out as a Girl Scout. Went to Venturing, but when Scouts opened up for girls and a troop was established, she jumped right on it. I am very glad girls were admitted. It's been great for her.

I’m sorry she had a bad Girl Scout leader. And it’s wonderful she had such an amazing BSA leader. I know local Girl Scout groups that have hiked Fourteeners while my daughter’s BSA troop is afraid to backpack. I am disappointed to see her make light of the Girl Scout program that allows both the crafty stuff she mentioned but does include lots of outdoor challenges if the troop chooses to do that. The BSA (Scouting America) will say we aren’t in competition but then put speakers like this on the stage at National Meetings and KZread.

Please do not begrudge the young woman her experiences just because they don't line up with your own. She has them and they are hers.

Oh my heart! I'm Boot on the Ground with you, Love! I will be showing clips of this @ my Venture Crew Interest Meeting tonight!! And to think, I've thought of "getting out of scouts" several times over the past 7 years. There is no scout tradition in my family. My 22 year old, Vigil Honor Eagle Scout now Camp Ranger son is the first. You are an inspiration for me to keep going. Thank you.

This should be required viewing for all Scouts and Scouters, supporters of Girls Troops and the naysayers.
