Eagle Rescue 101....The Basics....thumbs and all... Águila de rescate 101 / Sauvetage Aigle 101

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

While fishing off Nanoose Bay, BC, I happened upon a fledgling Bald Eagle "floundering" in the water. The video documents his welcome aboard...aborted mutiny, and transport back to dry land.
***Update - September 26, 2014.......Upon reaching land, He was picked up by Lorinne Anderson of Wild A.I.D. and it was discovered that this guy was seriously underweight and in need of medical attention. He is presently in the care of the good people at O.W.L. Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Delta, B.C. and we are all hopeful for a successful recovery and release back to the wild. He…(14-368 as they call him).. will be taken back to the area he was discovered, near Nanoose Bay for release when he is ready. If you feel you would like to donate to O.W.L. to help my little buddy and assist them in their good work you can find their contact information on their website at www.owlcanada.org/
***Update - September 27, 2014.....Went to see 14-368 and he's been eating well for 4-5 days and things are looking better day by day. Hats off to the good people at O.W.L for their great work.
***Update - October 20, 2014....according to the people at O.W.L., "Nanoose" is getting pretty feisty and snapping at his handlers quite a bit....sounds like a good sign for a "wild" eagle...!!
***Update - October 30, 2014....."Nanoose" is now over 4 kilos and off all meds.... but a bit of a discerning eater. According to the good people at O.W.L. today fresh duck is the entree du jour, and she has developed a penchant for soaking her bedding in her water dish and playing in the water.....go figure.... ;-)
***Update - November 3, 2014.....I spoke to Mindy Dick at O.W.L. and got the OK to go over and video some of Nanoose's "rehab" fairly soon......so keep an eye out here for a link to that video.....
***Update - November 13, 2014.....Just checked in with Nanoose's caretakers at O.W.L. and there have been a couple of hiccups over the last week or so, but still looking to let her loose in the flight area in the near future....at which time I hope be able to get some video to share.............
***Update - November 26, 2014.....O.W.L. reports that Nanoose has graduated to a larger cage with a couple of older birds who they hope will teach her a bit about the ins and outs of "eagling".............looking good.....!!!
***Update - December 4, 2014.....O.W.L. has posted a bit of video of "Nanoose" getting in some flying time on their facebook page at / 311582845544617 planning on a visit soon to shoot a little more to post here
***Update - December 18, 2014 - According to the good people at O.W.L. Nanoose had a bit of a digestive problem, but they're hoping it was just a transient issue, and he/she (still up in the air....)...is on the road to recovery.
***Update - January 15, 2015 - Not much change according to Mindy at O.W.L. Still monitoring Nanoose's eating habits and keeping fingers crossed. Word is he/she is still feisty and protective of food, but a little ambivalent about actually eating it at times.
***Update - February 6, 2015 - As of today, Nanoose is back on medication for a gastric infection that seems to be a bit persistent. O.W.L is hoping to get on top of it and get things back on track for recovery and release. Fingers crossed......!!!
***Update - February 10, 2015 - Stopped by O.W.L. to see Nanoose today and she was looking a little "disheveled". As O.W.L. manager Mindy explained it, this is due to her being quite enamored with splashing around in her water dish.....to the point they've hung her with the pet name "Swimmer". One would think that with her previous history she might be a little averse to the water, but good to see there hasn't been any lasting psychological impact. O.W.L. has her on a new antibiotic regimen in hopes of getting on top of the persistent bug she's been battling and are keeping a close eye on things. Keep up the good work guys.....!!!
***Update - March 5, 2015 - Got the sad news this morning that yesterday "Nanoose" had succumbed to whatever the ailment was she was suffering from. Mindy, Martina, Dina and all the staff at O.W.L. did their utmost to heal her during the 6 months she was with them, and they should be proud of the work they did....and continue to do. Also, many thanks to Lorinne and Norm of Wild Aid for facilitating her transport to O.W.L. .......RIP Nanoose....fly free....!!! .....if you feel inclined to help out O.W.L. with the good work they do, their contact information is on their website at www.owlcanada.org/

@@paulgreen2401 Fisherman are often ones taking care of nature and fish. Even to the point of getting in positions in order to manage lakes and isue law and regulations. To say that it has had good effect on lakes near to me would not say anything. They maintain them (managing waterweeds, preventing ''oxygen hunger'' in winters, taking care of sources of polution, net fishing, fishing in restricted times, fishing restricted fish - ''with what ever methods works''. Being part of nature and mitigating overpopulation strain on nature does not make eating fish not natural. And fishin for sports = released fish. Tree options - drasticaly reduce human population and, dont practice almost any technology (integrate back in nature), take action to keep nature in balance with watever works or dismantle nature and live in extremly dificult utopia where few selected speciman of nature are kept practicaly as pets (no undoing posibilities) p.s. about ''only in order to kill'' - eating fish is miniscule part of it. @@paulgreen2401 Owning slaves is not natural. It's cultural. Civilization is built on culture. If you really want to improve things, you should focus on what matters, like deforestation and habitat destruction for agricultural expansion, while we continue to throw out tons and tons of food. Or cultural superstition in various countries that turns systematic extermination of specific species into a gold mine. Hunting is not an issue and can be greatly beneficial for nature when handled right, and is even a tool for conservation. Your reasons are noble but you target them at the wrong issue.

Thank God someone with some sense is watching this video and commenting his respect. I have been following eagles for years, and this saint of a man did the first thing you do in a situation like this: remain calm, voice low, no sudden movements. If he had put the towel over this fledgling's head, he would then have had to contend with those talons. You cannot just go around picking up birds of prey no matter how well intentioned you may be. Sorry, Jack, I know I'm preaching to the choir here. Just needed to say something. Thank you for your thoughtful comment. We may be among the one or two kinder people left on this planet.🙋‍♀️🌹💜

What world do I live in? I can understand a little frustration from those saying it'd be better not to film at the beginning and focus on the bird but I CAN'T UNDERSTAND how people are bashing this guy!! He stopped to save a wild animal in distress. As others have mentioned, calm and slow is the approach here, you don't want to make overly fast movements or try to coddle it (I saw a comment below insulting the video and then recommending to wrap the eagle in a towel... WRONG!!) Anyways, the guy did a great job, the eagle was rescued and is being rehabilitated. This video gives reason to CELEBRATE! Stop shooting others down and let's support one another. I personally have never been in this situation and wouldn't know exactly what to do either. This man rescued the eagle from the water, didn't cause it further harm, and delivered it to authorities. He gets a 10/10 in my book!! Thank you for sharing this video to show there are still humans that are concerned with helping animals!!

Me, a few neighbors and my dad came closer to it as I was hurt. Just like you in the video we gave it some space so we wouldn't scare it or make it force to defend itself but we called in a few people from the bird shelter (I think it was called) and now they fixed him up and he's flying beautifully. Once in a while I see him flying around the neighborhood. Great video!

Would I help a creature like that in distress, of course. This amazing bird in this video was cold and exhausted and just needed a safe place to rest, warm up and dry out. I was at sea once a long time ago and an exhausted sparrow fell onto the deck. Some jackass crew-member just picked the poor thing up and threw it overboard into the ocean. I’ll never forget that. Was it just plain exhaustion, or hypothermia? I know how cold the water up island can get.. Or was it something else that forced the bird into the water in the first place? Eagles do not generally fall into the water unless they've been shot at.. I know it's illegal but pranksters with no conscience do occasionally shoot big birds..

I can imagine many thoughts/ideas/avoidences plans going round in your head all at once, but you chose a good balanced method and I particularly liked your instinct to aim the sun onto his plan profile in order to maximize the surface intensity of sunlight upon his Feathers. Great job sir.

I mean it's huge. Heck, they aren't even scared to swoop at you. Some eagle's, like the Golden eagle even take down wolves, that's in Bulgaria or Hungary, but they do so in pairs to avoid potential attacks from nearby wolves. Don't believe me?? Ask a falconer, because i have, or watch a video. Plus, if that Golden eagle was that large as a fledgling, their is no doubt it will be much bigger.
