E61: The cost of living crisis - what’s causing it, how bad will it get, and how do we fix it?

Prices are on the rise everywhere you look. Your electricity bill is going up. Food is more expensive. Rents are increasing. And your salary, of course, is not keeping up with it all.
Inflation is at a level not seen in decades. But why? Is it the war in Ukraine, the pandemic, or something else? Is it going to get worse? And more importantly, how the hell do we fix this?
Our panel, including Yanis Varoufakis, Erik Edman and Julijana Zita, discusses. Watch live and send us your questions and comments!

I think the reason why there is not more civil actions against these companies is because we have been miseducated about how things were changed throughout history.

1:02:40 ish. Yes. I've been saying this for a while, now. Republics are "democracy from above for the few, and the illusion of democracy for the many." Put another way, it's elective authoritarianism. However you want to put it, republics turn the citizens into *mostly* passive observers of the political machine, having little to no power to affect it. They can vote. They can protest. But the fact of the matter is that they have to fight AGAINST their government, which most often and most clearly sides with business interests. Even in statist systems (like the USSR), the people still have to fight against their governments to affect change, because while they may (in many cases) do more for the public than more privatized states, it's still being done above the heads of the public, usually without their input or consent. Whether statism or more "free" (for private enterprise), including social democracies, it's all top-down and authority-driven, where the authority doesn't rest with the masses, but with a select few that claim to represent the masses. With that being the case, it's entirely understandable why governments don't tend to do things that would favor those at the bottom over those at the top. Things like addressing climate change in meaningful ways, or mandating enough *paid* time off every week so that everyone can participate in town halls and other public debates that would build up the democratic aspects of society. It would all threaten the hierarchies, and that's unacceptable. Edit: I forgot to add in a solution. Vote for the options that are the lesser of all evils to slow down the march towards deeper authoritarianism and (in the case of the U.S. specifically) fascism. WHILE DOING THAT, build and organize your communities, starting with your immediate neighbors. Have regular socialization meetings so people get to know each other; the more people are familiar with each other, the more they will listen to each other and consider different perspectives, but also the easier it is to organize for collective action. Build mutual aid networks. Start introducing the democratic process while talking about issues that are of common interest to the community, including any kids old enough to understand what's going on, so that democracy becomes normalized. Network between organized communities and get ideas and resources flowing between them. Build a system of dual power on that basis. By creating a community network that can employ democracy (not just voting, but discussing for perspective and searching for solutions), you create a system of government that makes the official one more and more obsolete. You can then put your own community representatives into the official state machine, mandating that they both continue to participate in the networked community meetings and abide by its decisions. That's how you overcome this top-down system where the people have no say. By creating a bottom-up system where the majority of input comes from the people, not the big business interests and socio-economic elite.

I always appreciate the care & time Yanis takes to explain, education is a vital part of a successful movement. Agree wholeheartedly with, I think it was Judith, that large corps need to somehow be held accountable for immoral business practices like price gauging, or broken up entirely. Locals who are invested in their communities would have more pressure to guard against corruption - too bad the same is not always the case for a police force, politicians or the courts, as Erik alluded to.

While renegotiating my contract with my energy-supplier recently I remarked, "I never had this trouble when the utilities were nationalised." The lady I was speaking to responded with a deep sigh, "I know what you mean..." Shortly afterwards I learnt that the company had called in the Citizens Advice Bureau to help them cope with their many disgruntled customers. CABs are supported by their local councils who are financed by the rates. So did my utilities company get their help for free? Rip-off or cock-up? Tragedy or farce?

On Boris. I am disappointed he has been forced to step down. His ineptitude, although bad for everyone was one of the future lights of hope. He would fail to win the next election here allowing a different party to get in for a while. Now there will be a leadership change, false promises and rejection of the old made, and the electorate will gobble it up and vote them in yet again. The alternatives we have are not exactly great however getting away from the entrenched for a time at least is essential

Yanis macro economic views are usually spot on. But i do take issue w a few things: the constant use of the word 'capitalists'. Not everybody who makes money or has a business is a 'capitalist' Capitalism needs free markets which we dont have. Yannis is right, it is a scam in which the money system is corrupted to a high degree. That is not the fault of capitalism per se but the way the system has been rigged by the banks and corporate entities. Second point: about Germany, Yannis glosses over the fact that 20 years of terrible energy policy have also wrecked the german economy. BASF, the once major industrial player has moved 60% of their production overseas out of the EU. They are only staying to shovel up green subsidies. Until the EU finally sees that nuclear energy is the main way forward with some minor role to play for wind and solar it is heading for destruction. But if course Yannis and DIEM fully support the Green transition, thereby supported the suicide pact which in fact DELAYS any real green transition fron happening. People supporting this channel should take a look at the completely warped Carbon credit system and the big money involvement. I for obe an waiting for Yannis to open his eyes on this front..

The government didn’t understand globalisation when it set the regulations for foreign business and its too weak to change the regulations for big companies. You don’t need to break it up the systems just ensure its on an equal footing in tax and employment law and ensure its enforced equally. We have a police force not enforcing the law against white collar crimes and never investigates such crimes against large corporations. Instead they focus on petty crimes a symptom of being poor in capital and or education.

i think these are central bank figures (bonds) or at least macro averages obtained from the stock market. In reality, it's a different rate for everyone. If you are a minimum wage worker, groceries are up 30% in price, and that is your effective inflation. If you drive a car every day, your own measure of inflation will be more tied to fuel costs. That's why sometimes it is a limiting metric, and that consumer indices or median purchasing power changes might be more relevant, but i think inflation has a legacy in the economic discipline and is still used as a convention in the same way that GDP is outdated but still used.
