E4ME Electronic Rochester Quadrajet Carburetor Rebuild, 4 of 5 - Reassembly

We fully assemble our 1981 Camaro's carburetor from a pile of clean parts, a rebuild kit, and a new throttle position sensor.
PLEASE NOTE: The Secondary Lockout Lever ends up installed wrong in this video. English (United States) subtitles have been added to point out when the orientation is right and wrong. To see the part installed correctly, check out • E4ME Electronic Roches... at 5 minutes, 21 seconds, and play it very slowly. Thanks to Tommy M. for pointing this out!
This diagram may be useful: www.autozone.c.... Part #34 is the Secondary Lockout Lever.
Parts Used:
"Rochester Quadrajet Carburetor Rebuild Kit w/ Float & Filter 82 -85 305 350" (on eBay)
"Standard TH1 NEW Throttle Position Sensor CHEV/BUICK/GMC/PONTIAC/OLDS" (on eBay)

Thank you so much for this absolutely helpful and reassuring playlist for the rebuild. I'm going to do a rebuild me too without experience. Just a couple of questions. No lubricant on moving pieces was applied after cleaning that ? All ''dry'' assembly? Did you clean TPS and Solenoid? Contact cleaner ?

Thanks for the feedback and the questions! It might be a good idea to lube certain spots to prevent wear, but I don't think we lubricated anything not shown in the video. You just have to ask yourself (1) if it's internal, will gasoline was away the lube, or (2) if it's external, will it collect abrasive dirt? We did buy a new TPS as mentioned near the bottom of the video description. Contact cleaning is something we'd normally do if they look at all oxidized. It might be with 000 steel wool or 150 grit sandpaper (the value doesn't matter but it can't be too coarse or too fine). Then we always wash the contacts with contact cleaner (or carb cleaner or brake parts cleaner). To this day I don't know much about the computer that controls the electronic bits of this carburetor, or how to tell if it's good or bad. Luckily ours seemed to function just fine. Good luck on your rebuild!

Really appreciate the no-nonsense detailed assembly here. I made a mistake the first time, the silver post that was supposed to be turned 3 1/2 times, there was a rusty spot on mine that I had to turn a little harder to get it all the way down before backing it off the right number of turns. Car was driving poorly, secondaries wouldn't open, poor fuel economy. Secondaries are opening now and doesn't bog down like before so I think I may have it right now.

Very much appreciate that feedback! Much more content for the 1980 Camaro is on the way, including a full LS swap.

I noticed the plug over the TPS adjustment screw was left on. Is it not necessary to adjust or reset this with a new TPS?

@@WorkinOnIt At 20m30s, immediately to the right of the pump level, the silver cap is still there. It would have to be pulled out (like the leaky well plugs) in order to get to the TPS adjustment hex screw underneath. I guess my question is, if you put in a new TPS is that adjustment unnecessary? Is that why it was left alone, or is there another reason? Thanks!

@@robdebuhr3952 Honestly, we simply didn't know about this adjustment. Thank you for bringing it up! In taking a second look, this is the best article I found on tuning E4MEs: www.hemmings.com/stories/article/carburetion-for-the-new-age. The TPS discussion left me wanting more, but at least it's there.

Hi which carb rebuild kit did you use for this project?

  • @WorkinOnIt

The kit was purchased on eBay from tntcarbparts for $37.95 (w/o tax). The exact title of the item was "Rochester Quadrajet Carburetor Rebuild Kit w/ Float & Filter 82 -85 305 350". Both the seller and the kit get good marks from me. We also bought a Throttle Position Sensor for $8.31 (w/o tax) on eBay from satap2012. Exact title "Standard TH1 NEW Throttle Position Sensor CHEV/BUICK/GMC/PONTIAC/OLDS". That seller and the sensor also get good marks from me. Normally, if I like a part or kit, I will post information about it in the video's description and/or include it in the video. I didn't this time because the carburetor stamping shows that it's a 1985 carburetor, as explained here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKuKm7mFoq2qY8Y.html. So, the kit I used may not be the best one for a true 1981 carb (though I suspect it would work fine).

Hey guys! 1985 E4ME carb in a Monte SS. When I try to adjust the float- AND go all the way IN with the idle mixture solenoid screw, and then turn it out 3.5 turns.. the float doesn’t even move! It doesn’t pivot freely like yours does. There is interference with the brown plastic part under the “arrow” shape of the solenoid. (This has a brown and a blue wire going to it, IIRC). I can’t seem to get this carb rebuild to cooperate. Any thoughts?

Hi. I am flummoxed. my top assembly does not lie anywhere near flat against the new gasket. I can't see anything that would impede it sitting flat but there is a 1/16 inch gap even when applying a modest downward force. it seems like all the edges will go down individually, so something in the middle is high and hitting, but what? the gasket seems to lie completely flat. I thought maybe it was the bolt for the solenoid, so i pulled and redid that to 3.5 turns back but no change. Any other places where something could be off that would affect the seating of horn section?

I can relate! Although you only see the "right moves" in this video, we also made *a lot* of mistakes that were edited out. At one point the idle mixture solenoid was not sitting down all the way, and would have prevented the top assembly from lying flat. We had to pull it back off for some reason, and the second time it sat much lower, as shown at 5:00 in the video. So the idle mixture solenoid is my guess, but I don't claim to be an expert - any other theories would be welcome.

@@WorkinOnIt Yes! that was it. The CAP that covers this screw on the air horn was misaligned or too deep. at some point the cap just popped off and the horn fell into place. I figured this out only after I found a "spare part" that turned out to be that cap. :-)

Sorry, I don't sell anything. A quick search for "carburetor rebuild specialist" turned up several options, including some who will rebuild your carburetor. Be sure to research the reputation of any shop before giving them your $$$.
