My 20 year old 3 litre Jag runs on E10 no problem - Even Jaguar themselves said it was compatible. On the upside, don't to worry about rubber fuel lines. There are made of PLASTIC including fuel tank !

I'm sorry but that's bullshit they're telling you/us, it's pretty simple, E10 has been introduced to be 'greener' than E5 fuel, their logic is that they introduce more ethanol, a relative in the alcohol group, and as we all well know what happens when alcohol is open to air it evaporates quicker causing less damage to the environment, but at the same time, because ethanol is alcohol based, it trashes rubber and plastics by a chemical reaction, it heats up through the reaction, cools down after it evaporates and because of that rapid change in temperature it disintegrates. No amount of written 'proof' is going to convince me that it's safe to run on it. I'm no scientist, but as I'm an artist, alchemy is part of the process of making art because you're playing with chemicals and fluids all the time, I've also been on this planet long enough to know better than to accept some random person's opinion, use what's given to us, our brains!

The biggest no no with E10 is using good agricultural land for fuel production

Thank you for the Ethanol info. I purchased a 2001 Honda VF750C America. It was imported into UK in Nov 2021. I very soon found a horrendous amount of Ethanol damage, rusty tank, splitting fuel lines, seals etc. So now I take the Ethanol out. And the bike runs beautifully. Thank you again. Pete

Thanks for sharing your experience, sorry to read that all those issues arose but glad it's all cleaned up, fixed and running smoothly. Hopefully they realise they should keep ethanol free fuel as a 2nd option at the pump.

Hi from Ireland mate my old diversion 600 had similar problems especially fuel lines turning into jelly I now refine E10 and use valvemaster plus per tank fill

It does damage petrol engines yes. 100%

Ethanol in fuel is like fluoride in water, it shouldn't be there.

Try running on E15 or E85, Both have been used in U.S for more than 10 years. Even 1980's Chevy's are E10 compatible. It actually say's that they can run on 10% ethanol in owners manual !

That's one of the big downsides with E10. It contains less energy per volume unit so the vehicle ends up using more fuel. Buying more fuel = more tax paid at the pump. Makes you wonder.

Honest??? He doesn't know what he's talking about! Ethanol attracts water into the tank? Rubbish, water is formed in tanks from condensation naturally produced from temperatures going up and down, ie; day to night, summer to winter, not from ethanol attracting it! And you're taking what he says as the truth? He's got a nerve putting 'garage' in his profile name, there is no chance in hell i would take my vehicles to him for any work, mind you, there are not many honest mechanics in this world anymore, they're all in it for the money!

My MGF VVC 1999, runs fine on E10. Just a weekend car, but no issues. Reports of MGFs in Canada running on E10 type fuel for years, so no problems here in the UK anticipated.

Well, I accidentally put E10 in my 24 year old Mazda MX5 that has, since I bought it , started first time every time and still has the same PANASONIC battery in it I imported from Japan. After a couple of days it took 9 attempts to start it and all dirty smoke came out of the exhaust and ran lumpy. I was on just under half a tank,. Filled up with E5 to full and after 20 miles or so ran normally. Never had a problem since. My father in laws 25 year old 2 litre Volvo did exactly the same. Just my experience to share.

We put some E10 in a 1930 Chrysler and it ran appallingly, it was fine on E5. E10 i a big con.

Noticed my 2008 iconic model Toyota Prius (UK) started to run rough and noisy on E10 fuel - it was subtle but nonetheless disconcerting. The engine took much longer to warm up - using up far more fuel and being much less efficient. I was loosing almost 20% of my normal range per tankful (45 litres). Switched to using E5 Supreme Super Uleaded 99+ (Esso), and my MPG shot straight back up and mileage range too. Just broke my record this summer - 653 miles @ 69.4mpg from a tankful of E5 Super Unleaded 99RON. (Actually used about 41 litres). Forgive me if I don’t believe in E10 - but in the UK it’s a rip off - especially in a high efficiency hybrid vehicle. I’m sticking with Esso’s Supreme Unleaded 99+ - more expensive but my engine runs quieter, less vibration, is more responsive and extremely fuel efficient. It just works.

i have noticed i am using more fuel with E10 so i'm going to switch to E5 because i do a lot of miles

just sticks with e5 or no ethonal cotent and be safe e10 has less energy so you Will use a bit more.

Thankfully there are still some pumps out there that are offering 0% ethanol to help. You're also right about the higher volume used, which leads to the need for more frequent top ups.

@@thomasschafer7268 that's funny, isn't it? I ride a fazer 1000 and i noticed the difference almost immediately when i put E10 in it compared to E5. Also if you look up what ethanol is, it's an ALCOHOL, which has a chemical reaction with rubber and plastics, so it WILL corrode seals and rubber hoses a lot quicker than other fuels with less ethanol content. Remember the government's bullshit scam announcement about diesel being better for the planet and then a couple of years later coming out with the fact that it worse? So, you'll be paying out ridiculous money to have them all changed in a couple of years, i hope you're saving!

I use e30 and seem to get better milage than e10. Don't agree with the less energy claim as BTUs are used for that argument. BTU is a measure of heat. Is your vehicle using a steam engine?

The average Jo isn't going to do all these checks...!! we just wanna know is E10 BAD.... or is it fine to use??????

On older cars and garden machinery it is bad. Use E5 if you can, it performs better and a bit pricier, E10 does not perform as well and can damage your fuel system.

If water gets in to e10 fuel the ethanol separates from the petrol!

Water is formed in the tank from condensation, which is formed from temperatures going up and down from day to night, summer to winter. Water and fuel don't mix and left over time it will ruin metal tanks, ethanol also eats away at plastic tanks, that's why a lot of Triumph bikes have had issues with ethanol, they bubble and crack, that's what ethanol does, has a chemical reaction with rubber and plastics, it heats up and when it cools it cracks and dissolves, rendering them useless

Some modern small cars, mainly 4 cylinder cars with 6 speed autos/cruise control have 2 fuel pumps. The regular one in the tank, and a high pressure pump up by the engine. If the cruise control or you cause the car to downshift 2 gears to get up a hill or pass someone, the high pressure pump activates. This creates a vacuum in the system between the two pumps, and the tank pump acts like a filter and extracts the ethanol and clogs up the pump, and it can also cause it to clog up the entire fuel system. I had this happen twice in a 2016 Kia RioSX and the second time I told them to take pictures of what they found, and they showed me a tank pump full of corn oil. They had to replace both pumps each time under warranty, and even though we always use premium no ethanol fuel, you still get some lower grade fuel in the line when you go to the gas station. To keep it from happening we now use a half bottle of fuel injector cleaner each time we fill up the car, and still only use premium fuel. So far so good and its been 2 years since this happened twice in a couple of months. BTW, I used to work in an oil refinery and know what I saw in the pictures from the dealership.

Thanks for sharing this experience, the more anecdotal information is out there with specific vehicle types, the better people can look after their cars. I'm glad yours was able to get fixed under warranty and is still running well with the precautions now taken. It's frustrating of course that the issue came about in the first place and hopefully manufactures will take these kinds of learnings to make their cars more robust in future models.

@@car_ventures This happened because Kia remapped a 5 speed cruise control program to work on a 6 speed, causing it to drop 2 gears to accelerate up hills under the CC. They had to add the second pump to make it work and didn't realize what would happen. According to Kia, they have seen this before, but don't usually talk about what is causing it, but I had an idea what was happening and told them to take pictures.

@@RacerX888 The car has two fuel pumps because it has a direct injection engine in it. It has nothing to do with the size of the car or engine. The low pressure pump delivers more fuel than the high pressure pump is capable of using. The excess fuel is used to cool the high pressure pump and is returned to the fuel tank.

Its Rubbish watered down petrol , every time i put it in my little 1.1 Mitsubishi Colt the car bogs down and runs rough, today i put E5 Super Unleaded in and the car had instant power again , so obviously the higher Ethanol content is not good , it makes your car lose at least 10bhp in my estimate.

Yep, lower amount of energy per volume unit. Requires more fuel to be used. Performance wise, it may be possible to tune the engine to compensate, I've not come across anyone yet that has done so but would be interested to see if anyone has. Usually a slight amount of spark advance can help... if the engine is happy with a little extra timing.

@@car_ventures Thank you for that info mate and yeah i will definitely just have to cough up more in future for E5 as my old car coughs and splutters using E10 and i just could not believe how bad the economy was after putting E10 in the tank , it is definitely a scam.

E10 means up to 10% added ethanol. E5 means up to 5% added ethanol. E10 is mandatory for regular unleaded (95RON) in the UK. Premium unleaded does not to have added ethanol, but must be labelled E5. Esso currently has NO added ethanol in their Premium unleaded in most of England (check their website for details).

So if e10 damages rubber seals on older vehicles whats stopping it from damaging seals on newer vehicles

Louise, they are probably telling the truth here. Presumably, they are using different types of plastics and silicone rubbers, each with different properties. Incidentally, did you vote for E10? I know I was even given the chance! Governments exist to tax the people, and to wield power. They do not exist to help the people. The use of the police during covid earlier on was outrageous. Fancy fining two women out of a woodland walk because they had a cup of coffee in their hands, and therefore, they were not exercising. This reflects the state of this current government and culture within the police hierarchy. Did we vote for this?

Louise, good question. As rubber and plastics are made of different formulas, modern rubbers and seals tend to have been made with a level of tolerance towards multi use fuels, so usually incorporate something like a nitrile lining. This is less permeable to ethanol and helps keeps the rubber intact. The part about the different R rated hoses didn't go into much detail but effectively those R ratings define the standard with which the rubber compounds need to adhere. Multi fuels were less common years ago so a lot of the fuel components didn't need to have the chemical makeup to cope with anything other than regular unleaded. In recent years where it's more common place, manufacturers of parts would build components that are compatible with different chemicals e.g. ethanol. Hope that helps!

If the only rubber in fuel systems was the hoses it would be straightforward to replace them all with resistant ones, the issue is all the little 'o' rings ,diaphragms and gaskets. The other point you fail to mention in the US you can still buy ethanol free fuel 🤔

Yes, i would be concerned! E10 IS bad for rubber and plastics, which seals, hoses etc.., are made from, ethanol is an alcohol and we all know what alcohol does to plastics and rubber, it causes a chemical reaction, heats the rubber and plastics up, cools down when it's evaporated, and then cracks and dissolves, rendering them useless! It's a scam, they want us to buy into this bullshit electric vehicle by a certain date plan, which they don't fully understand, because to get the vast amounts of electricity, to charge them, it has to burn off fossil fuels because we STILL haven't come up with another source to produce it, and until then our future is looking very bleak!

Stick with E5 on these cars - we use a metal pellet in the tank from Sussex fuel promotions and they contract the problems of these Ethanol fuels well.

Ask yourself, what was the real reason the government introduced E10 fuel on to out forecourts. The explanations offered (to introduce a renewable energy resource in the form of bioethanol, or to make emissions more carbon footprint friendly, or to clean up emissions) just don't hold water. MOT emission standards were very high before E10. We really did not need to move the goalposts higher. A far more plausible explanation was a bid by the government to remove older vehicles from the roads. Older vehicles would probably go on for some time still with E10 before perishables, and internal rusting due to water, would take its toll. Knocking out the older vehicles means forcing cash-strapped families to buy newer, more expensive cars, including the newer electric vehicles. So the government can move vehicle purchases along, which have stalled due to its spurious and short-sighted approach it took to closing off British industry. This is another cunning tactic to force purchases of expensive electric vehicles. If the government wishes to reduce its carbon footprint, it should bomb other nations less, and stop flying hundreds of armed sorties over foreign lands, most of which are illegal. The real motive for E10 is not what they are telling you, as if you ever needed to be told in any case. God bless you all!

@@Dippy7520 Angela, an "old petrol" flame burns with a hotter flame than ethanol. That means there is more energy in "old" E5 petrol than ethanol. That means you get less energy from E10 fuel than E5 fuel. That means less mpg. That means we have been conned again! If things deteriorate much further in this country I'm thinking of acquiring duel citizenship and of making plans to exit. You showed these villains up for who they really are.

Ethanol in fuel is aktually a good thing ! It prevents carbon built up. It raises octane level. It burns clean. The only downside is that the engines have about 4% more fuel consumption. To prevent the ethanol to seperate from the fuel during time, you can add 25ml isopropanol per liter E10 fuel. This will not harm your engine. I never had an issue with it !

They are certainly trying to make things more difficult, the Oxford scheme is something right out of 1984 and thankfully there are protests taking place about it. The current 2030 ICE sales ban means that hybrids can still be built after 2030, so those will still be on the road for many years after 2030. There is probably at least 20-30 years where there will be a prevalent amount of ICE's around. By which time cars sold new today will almost be classed as classics. The best thing people can do is reject proposals, support those whose aim for sanity of governance, and buy non EV's and hybrids. I know several people whom change their cars every few years but have bought EVs because they say it's the way things are going. Even though they will be changing cars a few times before 2030, so they could have bought ICEs. The issue is it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. People buy EVs because they think it's the future, as it's what they hear from adverts. By buying an EV, manufacturers then report higher EV sales. Publications then report that people clearly want EV's based on increased production numbers. It then justifies more R&D, more ad spend... more people see ads, the cycle keeps going. That's not to say EV's shouldn't exist, only to say that there should be a mix and consumers must have choice, and EV's are not a good choice for the typical consumer. It's worth keeping them going, we're at least one generation away from seeing a significant change out there.

If using E10 means you will need to top up a bit more, surely that doesnt mean less carbs in the air? It sounds like a scam to make money.

Quite a few people keep going on about ethanol destroying fuel system parts but people seem to be oblivious to the fact that aromatic compounds either in the form of impurities or additives to the petrol are pretty good at degrading rubbers and plastics if not more than ethanol does.

I don't know if this is a good idea or not but someone suggested adding a small amount of mineral 20/50 oil in the tank to prevent the water corroding the fuel system.

Uh??? You're staying with E10 yet it causes more harm to the rubber seals, hoses and plastics? That doesn't make any sense, E5 is better for vehicle not E10, E10 has more ethanol in it, hence the name, which is an alcohol, which is destructive to all rubber and plastics. So yes, it is a government scam to get people to buy electric vehicles by a certain date by introducing this crap to the market for cheap, but do you remember the 'diesel is better for the planet' announcement on the news a while back? @@A_Pt_9298 I simply don't trust the government with anything they say and impose on us. Its a fact that they want to get rid of petrol & diesel cars by 2030 and my suspician is that this overly priced E5 is there to cripple older cars and most probably will be intentionally primed to destroy the older engines. The E5 ranges from 1% to 5% ethanol and the E10 ranges from 6% to 10 %. There is a kit for seperating ethanol that you can use and I will be testing both out soon anyway but I still think E5 will be intentionally polluted with other chemicals never mind the price rise they have put on it. Do you remember when most cars were petrol and diesel was running at 40p per litre while petrol was around £1. This was a ploy to get everyone on diesel and when we did they put the price of diesel up to the same as petrol. Ps check your vehicle manuals on the older cars and it will say that E10 is fine for your vehicle. Its all a scam.

We had this exact same panic in Germany many years ago when they introduced E10, and even now people still spread false informations about E10. Verdict: people still prefer the fuel with the least Ethanol in it because of bias, although there are next to no known cases where Ethanol is the cause for damage in E10 approved cars. Just don't use it when your manufacturer says that you shouldn't use it. Ethanol is hygroscopic, yes, but it will absorb the Water until it is oversaturated. Only if that happens, water will separate from the fuel and sink down in the tank. Now guess what: both E5 and E10 will draw moisture from the air when temperature differences occur (mostly during winter), but E10 is able to hold more water than E5, making it a superior choice over E5 because E5 will be oversaturated far sooner than E10. So if you don't want to use your car for a longer period of time (like a few months), make sure your tank is full (less air in the tank means less moisture), and use E10 instead of E5. Having a full tank absolutely minimizes the dangers of pure water in the tank. BTW: here in Germany E10 means UP TO 10%, means usually your E10 sample will have about 6-8% Ethanol in it, no more.

Now we have E10..what's next as technology moves on...E15..E20???? Is this secret GREEN agenda to get everyone into ELECTRIC vehicles in the future.As an older ex-driver when crossing a road/street I have to be more aware as you cannot hear electric cars.Twice today ridiculously large cars just cruised silently by. Question...who will pay for repairs to a modern car damaged by fuels containing more ethanol?..insurance?

Schlawinius -- I am not convinced at all with your hygroscopic argument. Ethanol is hygroscopic. Yes. This means there is water in the system which can do damage, including rusting. E10 will absorb more water than E5 which means there will always be more water in the system with E10 than E5, making water damage more likely with E10 than E5. Phase separation into a hydrocarbon phase and aqueous ethanol phase would require a fair volume of water absorption, and would take time (and then only with the petrol filler cap off). However, damage is supposedly due to water content and not due to the 1-phase or 2-phase fuel system in the fuel tank.

Are we going to see water traps in newer petrol cars like there are in diesel vehicles?

E10 Fuel is NOT Green by any means, it a big con trick. It is less volatile than the old RON 95 unleaded, it lasts about 2 months before it is unusable and it creates fuel system damage, leave alone the carbon deficit of producing the Ethanol. Rewinding of Wild Boar in the UK done illegally now releases the equivalent CO2 generated by 1,000,000 cars, an airliner generates on take off the same CO2 output by an average family car's 10 years of motoring (75,000 miles). E5 at worst would be better than E10 which is lower performing all round. We are not in the EU anymore so we can drop E10. Unless China starts cleaning up its polluting we are wasting our time tinkering at the very edges.

It will destroy all cars Old and new cars have rubber seals so this is blatently a scam

good video but if replacing fuel lines you would be better off going for the highest spec which is sae j30r14t2, 4219 barricade made by gates which can handle any fuel thrown at it .

It will almost certainly cause damage if your car is pre 2000. It is the whole idea, no one is buying electric cars, so what better way to "incentivize" than to give you fuel that will damage your engine. Oh and Ethanol causes its own damage to the environment.

E10 was already being used in USA so GM designed their vehicles to cope with it. Useless advice. Check AA or RAC websites for actual information.

I live in Australia and we have had E10 for many years but fortunately we have a choice of 91 95 and 98 unleaded petrol so l never you go on about fuel lines l know in great Britain you have no choice thank goodness our emission laws are not as strict as other countries me 1997 toyota hilux as a decal telling near the filler cap to use unleaded fuel no E10 crap l have had a lot of experience with using E10 and all have not bean good

Hi LES I live in Perth Western Australia, I have tried every means to find out what brand/ type of petrol does not have ethanol! Can you give me a heads up ? Many thanks Simon

Ethanol is corrosive to engine parts its why currently there's only a limited amount of it in petrol. It doesn't matter weather your car is old or new with ethanol resistant parts, 10% is going to give your car problems a few years down the line. You'll see. Its also les efficient than regular fuel so you'll be spending more on it.

Not well. You will need fuel system cleaner regularly, and octane booster as well to keep it running smoothly. It would be like running a high performance engine on 87 octane gas. It will run like shit if you have a high perf engine.

@@RacerX888 Fortunately (?) it's a standard 1600cc SOHC (aka Pinto engine) engine, so no real performence to speak of.

@@baylessnow Then you should have fewer octane related issues, and just need to use fuel system cleaner regularly to keep the carb from clogging up. Cheers!

yes change your valve stem seals and get silicone hoses, maybe at worse get upgraded injectors dependig on age, it also dependes on your block, but on the whole it wont really matter it will clean your engine but it may corrode the valve stem seals, just change the valve stem seals and use silicone pipes from a boy racer shop :) your fine up to 99octaine on stock old engine with carbs and stuff yeah definatly valve stem seals

No. The valve stem seals stops oil going down the valve stem into the combustion chamber! If u have fuel there u have a big problem!

…in UK… just curious!…and will I be able to get away with one tank of E95 to every 3 tanks of E10?… or putting a little 2 stroke oil in to keep the line materials lubed be ok?…again…curious!

I've heard about 2 stroke oil and think that's a great idea here and there, especially if the car sits a while (months). I'm not too familiar with 2008 VW Polo, I'd be surprised if it had issues. So long as it's regularly fuelled and doesn't sit for months then a mix of e5 and e10 is a good preventative measure. Maybe alternate half tank tops ups between the two. That will help dilute as much as possible. Doing 3 tanks e5 and 1 tank e10 would mean it sees a higher concentration on that 4th tank. Usually e10 isn't fully 10% (I forgot to mention that in the video). It could be up to 10% so could easily be say 6% or 4% depending on the station and time of year. Likewise e5 is the max rating. But I'm with you.. treat it as worst case and take preventative measures based around that for the best possible outcome. I've seen a couple of carbs recently that sat over winter (6 months) empty, after running e85 (85% ethanol). They had some corrosion and needed to be cleaned out. But during a race season where they are regularly being used they run fine. It's during down time dry out that the corrosion seems noticeable, and it's running almost entirely ethanol. Bit like hard water limescale. Inside the copper and plastic pipes they are fine. But the sinks and shower surfaces which go through drying cycles, are where the limescale builds up. Same with a toilet cistern, the parts which see limescale build up are the areas where the top of the water level is. Or a more elegant example would be a shower head.

High octane fuel is superior, end of! I put in my lawnmower, would you put E10 in a super car or superbike, NO! E10 is shite!

Yamaha xt 250 and Mz etz 251 carb jets eaten by ethanol fuel.here.a lot of work to fix.

You don't tell all the truth. You can Easily remove the ethanol in your petrol. Ethanol binds with water and extracts water out of the atmosphere. Just put 1/4 water in a gallon of petrol and shake it, let it settle then drain off the water that settles at the bottom (from the bottom) What you are left with is pure gas.. or at least a lot more pure than it was. Of course you need to do this for each gallon. If you have a Carb, Don't use Ethanol. Even if the car is USED on a regular basis over time the ethanol can cause damage.. there are many videos proving this. It causes your spark plug to fire at incorrect times.. it does this all the time. It changes the ratio where combustion happens..

does tesco still sell vpower 99 octaine just use that

@@tonybreward8678 there's allways one, cant remeber what tesco's is called vpower shell tesco's momentum 99 and cosco super unleaded there all 99 octain uk fuels enjoy, the 99 octains are protected. fill ya boots , or just add· Methyltretbutyl, toluene or propylene oxide

U mad vpower high performance cars or even normal cars benifit I am talking from personal experience

put in a gas can then clear can & remove the ethanol... theres videos about how to. then put it in the vehicle.

and we are back to R numbers

that's pistons. not fuel, or your timming is out, piston rings need replacing or you need block sleeves as its loose, how many miles you done, it may be the crank or misfire, vpower 99 octaine is good in celica's E10 will be fine just upgrade valve stem seals and get silicone hoses

@@rcplaytime shell and tesco have protected the Vpower range its staying at E5 its called Vpower fuel cost 5p more a litre but you get more out of it and itl make ya faster, get the Vpower if you can find it, nealry all tesco and shell garages sell it, some others sell it but its called summit else, its the 99 octaine just use that its E5 still and protected to stay at E5

By knock I assume you mean predetonation and higher octane rating will fix this! If it is bearing knock then totally different story!

Most toyotas 1998 on wards are fine with exception of 2.0 & 2.4 avensis .

Volvo C30 2.0 petrol engine will not run well on this junk.

Hardly an informative video. What about e10 corroding alloys.

It includes information that I've never seen mentioned which is what inspired me to add to the topic. Seems to have helped a lot of people get a better understanding. Project Farm made a video recently taking a look at corrosive effects on materials.

watered down fuel plus tax at the pump ,plus price hike almost doubled in past month someone has their hands in your pocket while your cherished classic vehicle is being ruined, ITS GARBAGE .UTTER TRIPE.

Ye it's a stealth tax. Lower mpg = topping up more often = more tax. They tax the volume, which increases as more is required to do the same job.

instead of E10 they could of just changed the catalistic converter laws, made them a bit more powerfull to filter, needed on new M.O.T's

A brand new car off the forecourt should be compatible for flex fuels, but without checking each I'd only be making an assumption. But given how much warranty claims could cost, it should be in the manufacturers interest to ensure flex fuel compatibility for all vehicles. Years ago when it was less common, there was less of a need, which has resulted in the many conversations around potential issues with older cars.
