E08 | The Big Lap - Gibb River Road (Part 1)

We are starting the Gibb River Road!!
660kms of corrugated road carving its way through gods country with magnificent gorges and water holes just waiting to be explored.
Looks a little different this year, with a few places not open this dry season.
But the pay off is that it is crazy quiet, with very little traffic passing through and most gorges to ourselves!
Stay tuned for The Gibb Part 2 next week,
Cheers guys!
Cam, Tiff and Chloe.

The contacts on the switch were shagged from corrugations, I cut the switch out and hardwired it. Kept going for another couple of weeks and then the motor burnt out anyway (you'll see in future Eps). Just not up to the job of rough roads unfortunately.

    Hi, love watching your trip. I am interested in the WiTi interface and alarm you installed. Could you give me a review to the electronic brake system etc. Thanks Lynda

  • @WildTouring

    @WildTouring

    3 жыл бұрын

    Gday Lynda. I will do a video review of it eventually after using/testing it over a longer time period. But here are my thoughts so far: The WiTi is pretty simple to install, similar to wiring up a trailer plug. Instructions and wiring diagram are straight forwards. If you just want the alarm system then you only install the unit in the trailer/caravan/camper. If you want the wireless towing you install a second system that is already wirelessly paired, into the vehicle. Both tap into your trailer plug wiring. And require a power feed. The alarm system is brilliant. To arm or disarm it's as simple as holding the key fob button (you get two key fobs included and can purchase spares). A little red light indicates whether or not it's armed. If anyone attempts to tow the caravan away or forces a locked door/or window whilst alarm is armed, the van detects the movement (gyrometer and accelerometer) and locks on the brakes as well as sounding an alarm and flashing all the vans lights. It's a clever little system, it won't allow you to arm the alarm on accident while you're towing (say you accidently press the key fob in your pocket), because it senses for movement for before arming. So there's no risk of brakes locking on at the wrong time! It also can detect the patterns of movement from wind, so that movement won't activate it when armed either. When the alarm does activate, it only puts the brakes on for a 5 second internal, and sounds the alarm/flashes lights for 30 second. This is so that it doesn't run your battery flat or annoy neighbours if it was just an accident (like a kid kicking a footy into your van). The system them rearms and waits to detect further movement before activating the alarm/brakes again. Really good for free camping or caravan parks if you're away from your van, also great for at home on the driveway, they use very little power (your solar panel would provide far more power even through winter than the WiTi needs to run). There is also an optional GPS tracker available, it allows you to locate your van if they do manage to steal it. The alarm system and gps tracker may get you a discounted rate from your insurer, always worth asking. The wireless towing just works exactly as your normal wired plug would. Brake controller and all lights operate as per normal. The systems are already linked and connect automatically whenever your car is in range of the van. The big bonus here is that if you travel on unsealed roads you'll never have to worry about broken trailer plugs again! Also no issues with condensation or corrosion, as nothing is exposed to the elements like your tradition trailer connection is. The owner of the company, Tony is a really helpful, friendly and passionate bloke. He will be happy to assist you if you have and other questions! If you do buy anything WiTi, use 'WILD' in the discount/coupon code section to save yourself 10%! Hope that helps!

  • @WildTouring

    @WildTouring

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@lyndac7409 no probs at all! Yes you still need a brake controller if you're towing anything over 750kgs with electric brakes. WiTi do sell their own one if you don't have one, and that would be the most cost effective way, as it's only $150 ($135 with discount) . It connects to the vehicle unit, and has a dial on your dash for adjustment. But the wireless towing is compatible with any other brake controllers if you already have one. I'm using a red arc tow pro elite ($300), and it works perfect 👌

    @@WildTouring Thanks again. Looking forward to watching the rest of your adventure, and hopefully we will be able to visit some of those places when this COVID subsides.

    I guess that's subjective and would depend on how much traffic has been through since grading. From my perspective it was a good graded gravel road, we were comfortably able to sit on 70-80kms and only locked it into 4wd when we ventured off the road looking for free camps. I'd have no hesitation driving any 4wd through with good tyres.

    Thanks for taking the time to post your content, enjoy watching it. How do you find the Forbes 13? We are looking to upgrade from out forward fold, the Forbes is a serious contender im just conscious about the weight. Hows the price for the cvs from repco 🙈 had to buy one a few weeks back. Ouch

    We're loving it. We upgraded from a forward fold too. Never thought we would be caravan people. But the Forbes is a brilliant size to be able to get down tighter tracks and into those speccy camp sites. And then have the comfort of a hot shower and an inner spring mattress!

    Great video guys,. We did the Gibb 2014 and it was a lot busier than you have encountered. The video brings back some great memories. How warm was the water? It was freezing when we were there. Enjoy your trip.v
