Love watching Brian set up a 3D plane, 100% can tell he has never flown or built one 3d planes use the 33% rule on the CG, I would also recommend dialing all your throws down to 50% for low 70% med and 100% high use all 3 positions on that 3 way switch

I was having a bitch of a time setting up my E-flite Erratix 3d plane and I remembered that I watched your video on the build and set up of the plane..I watched several videos on how to set up the NX-8 and set up safe and could not get it set up correctly??? So when I remembered that I had watched ur vidd on the 3d Erratix I went back and watched it from beginning to end and now my 3d Erratix is set up and ready to go!!! The only thing I did not do was set up the reverse thrust option on my Erratix..but that will happen sometime later..thanks soooo much for this viddd!!! U definitely have my support and I will let all my friends know to watch your videos. Thank you again Brian!!!!!👍👍👍

Hi Brian, in watching this very good box/setup vid you did on the Eratix, during the radio setup portion, I noted your comment about the note in the setup section of the manual that states "Set servo travel to 100%" and wanted to chime in here. I "think" what they're trying to convey is: on new plane setups, especially 3D planes, a lot of guys address the servo "Travel" first, to make sure they are running the servos and control surfaces to their optimal range. This sometimes means setting the servo "Travel" upwards to anywhere between 120 to 150 % then backing off a click or two to prevent binding. Then that new "Travel" setting becomes your overall 100% and you can now set your " Rates" to achieve the specified/suggested control surface throws in degrees or mm per the manual. I'm guessing that for the Eratix, reason they note the "Set servo travel to 100%" is, they don't want you going past that 100% Travel setting, perhaps due to AS3X / Safe parameters or something like that. Hope that helps. Thank you for everything you do for all of us!

Awesome review, I just ordered this plane. I think a spot of CA glue on the landing gear, elevators, wing saddle and vortex generators are in order. I have built many of these 3D planes and at one time or another the airframe becomes weak at the screw mounts due to the G forces being created by all the erratic maneuvers.....

Hi Brian, I took my twin timber to the field for the first time yesterday and a fellow flyer had on of these. So I had to see if you've done a video on it. Lol I'm glad you did. I watched you fly in the gym. And then watched the unbox and build. I'm so glad we have the same radio (in this video), because electrics are very new to me and these radios are very foreign and intimidating. I'm also glad that my sister is into it, and helps me with the complicated stuff so I can do the flying. For the price point I think this will be the next one, and I may be fortunate enough not to have to wait until next summer for it. 😁

It's a BIT delicate, but you CAN 3D pretty much out of the box. It's a fun plane, but just to be totally clear, you can definitely make a lighter 3D plane like this. The BNF aspect, and very quick build will help you get a feel for the 3D side of things, but just bear in mind, at a later time, you might want to try an even more light version. Enjoy!!! bprc.me/Eratix

@@BrianPhillipsRC it's still a little hard for me to embrace electrics when I can get a 20 minute flight out of 6 ounces of fuel and all the battery was required to do is run the service for the control surfaces. The longer the flight the higher a flew , and then I just dead stick Land on purpose. Something tells me you were that kind of flyer too. Lol

44:50. I TOTALLY hear ya man! I spent God only knows (Felt like 2 hours?) trying to DL the update to my trans. First over the WiFi, and like you, it got stuck, then I did the same log out- log in bit, that didn't work, so then I went to the spektrum site, used the SAME info I used on the radio to log in, and it didn't work on the site! So, of course ya know the drill there, "Reset PW", wait for the emails, fart around with making a new one, which they give no hints what they want, as far as caps, and #s and unique symbols. My old one was all lower case, and now that doesn't work anymore, it was just a circle jerk forever! FINALLY got the dumb thing to work, put the update on the SD card, and got it off the card into the radio...WHEW! What a PITA though. Again though, your help is greatly appreciated. I've learned more about the radio watching your vids, so I wanna thank you for that for sure. Now it seems to me, the things you review fall secondary to the great radio tips! lol It's like, "Yeah yeah, cool plane, BUT, how do ya set this up on the radio?" And yes, a minute or so after the 44:50, I AM coming back into the hobby after about 15 years or so, and all this new tech is a bit intimidating for sure. Yes, the 'i' series of radios are seriously cool BUT, like you said, not so many people gonna shell out almost a grand for a transmitter. Sure, I want one bad! buuuut...;) 1:10 eaaaasy now...there'a alotta nice planes in there for that prop to make a mess of!

Brian - the Chinese made models I've encountered do not use American hardware but the American tools will sometimes work. Most of the Chinese made models I've had use Japanese hardware and Japanese Industry Standard (J.I.S) tools usually work best. This particular screw on the tail did not respond well to even my J.i.S tool. Believe it or don't - a small Flite-test screw driver included in one of their kits worked the best for me on this one. Not the first time. I've had other screws that it worked best on before. So I went as tight as I dared without stripping it but it did not seem to be completely in. I left it alone and put tape on each side of the stab because there was a tiny bit of wobble in it.

It's also a good way to keep from losing screws on a counter that's hard to find little screws by keeping them stuck to the magnet till needed! You can also magnetize your screwdrivers/drivers by always leaving a magnet on them. They will stay magnetic for some time even after you remove them.

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

I never play with throws, I just follow the hole positions in the manual if they're BNF, and if they're plug and fly, but when they're a KIT or an ARF, I sometimes have to guess....but admittedly, even then, I don't measure throws. Honestly, I've maybe measured throws ONE time, back when I was just trying to make more throw on a highly modified plane. To answer your question, if it weren't already clear, I don't think it's paramount...but there may be value in a PNP more-so than in a BNF where this type of thing is already worked out for us at the MFG.

I found it strange that Horizon never mentioned the feature anywhere in their propaganda, either. I missed the part about not using it and, boom, there it is... Right in the first section on page 3 as a WARNING. LOL You might be right on the no tailwheel thing. I can easily see someone ripping off their rudder trying to use reverse on grass or other unprepared surfaces. Apparently, those surfaces rip off pretty easily and many are beefing the hinges up with blenderm type tape, etc.

Brian, I and many people in my club are breaking out part of the Eratix wing that braces the landing gear. There is basically a 4:1 lever created by the plastic feedthrough piece acting as a fulcrum in the fuselage that multiplies the landing force on the gear by ~4 at the wing brace. It is a simple fix, but it is a weak point that rebreaks easily. Do you have any bracing suggestions? That would be a great video if you could share a solution. This plane is popular and flys great. I looked online and I haven’t seen anyone addressing this. But the CA is working overtime on this problem, particularly if the runway is not paved.

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

Oh boy, tough call. I'd say you'll have to use 2 part epoxy of your choice, since CA is gonna be too weak, with small attachment points. You could also make string or wire connections for support on the tips.

I've spoke about this many times, but maybe you missed my more elaborate explanations... This is one of the most complex and expensive tools you'll use in flying RC aircraft, and there's a lot of people just getting into or getting BACK into the hobby who need a lot of help. If the BNF profile is available, and you know how to use it and want to use the factory setup, go for it, but I'm going to suggest setting it up yourself. I don't like it being done for me, since I want to control how well it works, and KNOW how it works. If there's a problem, I want to have some clues as to what might be causing it...all pro-doing it yourself ;) Anyway, hope this helps answer your question, but as I say all the time too, to all their own; we don't want to tell people what to do, only suggest what we think might work well, and what WE did, so you can gauge our success or lack thereof in the event our review goes sideways - LOL ;)

I have never heard of "cornhole" and etc. A true "Hammer Head" is a stall turn pivoting on a wing tip. "Hovering" is the correct terminology for hanging stationary on the prop and thrust vectoring with the control surfaces to hold it nose up. I am sure there's a bunch of 3D pilots a bit confused. I am trying to figure out what maneuver you call a "cornhole" actually is. Thanks man. Keep up the great videos.

to avoid the dreaded - lost the tiny screw problem - magnetize the tip of the screwdriver, and I like to tilt the plane so that when I insert the screw my driver is pointed straight down - helps to avoid the screw falling off the driver even though its magnetized and from turning sideways to the hole. Multiply by 10 the frustration you had over the poor documentation and that is how I feel about the screws they use in a lot of cases - too small, too shallow - leading to stripped screws or screw that will not tighten down all the way. I would prefer a hex head or in some cases just a bigger / deeper screw. I know I 'm not the only one who feels this way....so wish this info could get passed on to the aircraft designers.

Just got mine put together, but I'm having trouble with the radio setup (DX9). First, in AS3X mode, it doesn't seem like my servos are moving at all when I move the model around. Yes, I ran the throttle up above 25% to trigger the AS3X on. Also, my aileron servo horn wasn't centered out of the box. Was yours like that? If so, any idea on how to center it? I can't remove the screw because the fuselage foam is right over it. Thanks!

  • @whoknows8678

    @whoknows8678

    Жыл бұрын

Okay, I figured out the servo. If you remove the two mounting screws (you can easily get to them at an angle with a long screwdriver), the servo will lift up enough that you can rock it over and get access to the spline/horn screw. With the horn removed, the entire servo will come out. Good to know for future maintenance and anyone else who might not have a centered aileron servo horn out of the box. Same applies for the rudder servo, but that one is even easier because there's more clearance to the foam directly above it.

As for the AS3X, I "think" I can see the servos moving slightly when I move the plane around. Strange that I can't hear them, though. With AS3X you need to make sure the surfaces are moving...stand with the plane in your hands, and prop toward your belly (AFTER safely giving throttle, then turning on Throttle Cut...of course) then just spin around with the plane pointed out from you - you'll see the rudder point in the direction you're spinning. Also, you can do similar with ailerons and elevator, but may not need to spin ;)

We've found that no matter what speed we go, we're either too fast or too slow for someone...so if you want to change the speed, click on the GEAR, then PLAYBACK SPEED, then choose as slow as 0.25X speed. This might be enough to take the edge off, and then you can get what you need with only the occasional pause needed.
