Dyzee "Before Art Was Judged" - rare footage 1998

Фильм және анимация

Artist Statement:
Here I have captured a moment in time of complete innocence, where there were not yet any competitions in the original city of Toronto, but only cyphers at underground hip hop parties (Jams). This video captures the mentality I had, when we were innocent, before my name spread across the world, before having to win over judges, before caring what other people think, before knowing that I could or one day would live from the bboy culture. We were only breakin to please ourselves, to express ourselves... To prepare and test ourselves when the real battles came, unexpectedly, but always in search of. This footage was just recently digitized off an old VHS tape of old training footage, I have decided to keep it as close to its raw, bad quality and editing feel, the same way we used to be able to watch footage back in the day. In Toronto, there was a mentality of ORIGINALITY comes first. At this time, everything I did was to build my own style, my own flow, and my own moves. I was in my own world... sometimes I wish I could go back in time, back into my own world.
This is the first of my works, a pre-trailer to my bboy career as I finish getting the rest of my footage on the digital format. The next video will be about all the moves and styles that was invented by me and my crew which many people are using the legwork and thread steps today, unaware of the names or origins of them. Stay tuned for "Points Corrected"

THIS IS WHAT BREAKING REALLY IS. - a lot of people don't realize that even though breakin has become more popular through media giving more people access to studio space, when your forced to break in stinky basements, school hallways, the street, that is where the REAL CREATIVITY and ORIGINALITY is born ~

I feel kind of blessed at this point, I'm 2 years deep and I'm from a city where I'm part of the last crew left and I'm the son of an old skooler and we are just lookin 2 our neighbourin city 2 knock them off as such and we're just constantly training to b distinguished from them and look unique, complete innocence and interestingly I'm the only guy in both cities messin with origami threading thanks to see you dyzee peace and respect

At the same time I am inspired I am nostalgic. I am completely amazed at the level of creativity here and how you have managed to make connections in your artwork. I only wish there was a feel and an environment for this kind of mentality to breed as i like how artistic this is.

1998 was just about when I was starting out. I remember me and me crew were always talking about how crazy and original your style was. Surprisingly, one day after school, you dropped by to break with us. I'll never forget. I even remember that notebook filled with moves that you carried with you. I can't believe that was over 13 years ago.

If I could dance like anyone it would be Dyzee. He's creative, unique, original and probably a very genuine guy in real life with an intellectual head screwed on. No Clichés needed, the video speaks for itself. Nice too see the mentality still remains even though i'm only a bboy of 3 years and have much to learn. Peace.

Hey Dyzee, I remembered you and started looking up clips of you here on KZread. Nice footage! I wonder if you still remember me. I'm Hugo / Bboy Force, that guy who sent you a bunch of good songs on MSN, and we had some lengthy online convos about theory and flow concepts. We've met at Scarborough Town Center and Sherbourne practices several times. You really are the most memorable bboy from here. I hope things are going well for you in Korea!

Really wonderful footage, and it's clear that you've kept true to your style, so I'm not really sure if the pre-fame stuff matters. You've got nothing to prove and even a "famous" bboy ain't that famous. It's not like you're Tom Brady or Tiger Woods, and even if you were that famous, bboys still go to jams and hang out. I'm pretty sure you'll always be one of us, except that you had more talent and worked harder. Respect.
