Dyna Vs. Sportster! Which Harley Davidson Is the Best For You? Buyer's Guide, Review, Considerations
Today on Jon's Moto Garage I'm bringing you a side-by-side comparison of the Harley Davidson Dyna and the Harley Sportster. These are two bikes that new riders often consider when looking at the Harleys. A big predicament many find themselves in is which one do I buy? The Dyna or the Sportster. Is the sportster too small, too slow, not enough power. On the other hand, is the Dyna too big, too heavy, too much bike for a new rider? There are lots of factors to consider when deciding which is the best for you. You also have to consider the individual. We all come from different riding backgrounds and have different riding preferences. Furthermore, we all have different riding styles and habits. Here are just a few things to consider: What kind of riding will you be doing (short rides, touring, commuting, weekend warrior, etc.)?
How much experience do you have riding?
What's your height, weight, size, etc.?
Do you plan on riding two-up?
While not an exhaustive list, I'll go into some of the differences between the Harley Sportster and Dyna models as well as discuss some of the things to consider when deciding which is best for you. We'll also do a start up and walk around, and I'll show you clips of each of these bikes in action. Enjoy!
harley davidson sportster vs dyna, is the sportster or dyna better for beginners, which harley should I buy dyna or sportster, should I buy the dyna or sportster, side by side comparison sportser and dyna, differences between harley sportster and dyna, what's the difference between the sportster and dyna, why should I buy a sportster instead of the dyna, should I buy a harley dyna, should I buy a harley sportster

    I ended up picking up a 2009 Sporty L883LX with less than 1900 miles for 4 grand. I started with cause I haven't ridden regularly in over a decade, wasn't sure a big investment on reacquainting myself to two wheels was wise. What if I didn't want to ride as much as I thought or laid it down? Now I'm stoked about it. Thinking of customizing the Sporty for fun rides and picking up a Dyna Switchback for touring.

    Just bought my first Harley. I bought a beautiful and badass XL883L Superlow with a club fairing and a cam and Thunderheader exhaust. I'm not a big guy at 5 foot 11 and 175 pounds but this bike feels like it was made for me. It has a 13 inch Progressive suspension instead of the original 10 inch suspension and it's a great bike! Has plenty of power and it's a joy to ride.

    you can't go wrong with either, these are my 2 favorite Harley's. I think the Dyna line was the best looking HD's for 2 decades & the best bang for your buck. The Dyna Street Bob is probably my favorite stock bike looks wise of all time. I also love how versatile & customizable sportsters are I love everything from the flat track & scrambler conversions to hard tail sportster bobber & the 48 & 72 were some of the coolest stock bikes in years. I never understood the sporster hate their great for new riders & great commuter/bar hopper for seasoned riders. I love them both & was very sad HD combined the dyna line with the softail, sure the new street Bob & low rider look good in a soft tail but it will definitely mean less crazy customs. The twin shock will be missed for sure! & I certainly hope the sporster hangs around for a long time to come.

    I’ve got that exact sportster. I do want more power but I’ve come to love it. I see my friends on massive Harleys and it’s cumbersome AF around the city. The main thing I don’t like about it is that it’s waaaay too low! When I go over speed bumps I have to stand up OFF the bike or it clangs the frame. And yes... I’ve adjusted the preload. Will update to a FatBoy at some point 🤘🏻

    I used to work for Daytona H-D in the rental department, so I've ridden quite a few miles on quite a few models, and I enjoyed most of them. When it was time to buy, I ended up going with a rigid mount Sportster 1200S. Once I chase down the heads I'm after, it will be sporting a Hammer 1275 kit with 560 cams and a Mikuni HSR45. Should be good for about 100-110hp when all is said and done.

    I have both and came from the school vintage middle displacement sport standards like the Honda CB, Kawasaki KZ, etc. IMO, the Sportster is a branch on that family tree and the Roadster version will feel right at home if you like those and want to stop and turn. To amplify performance get a XR1200 won't disappoint and it's cousin the Buell (any of them). The Dyna is used for more gentle riding and I'm a much better rider than what the Superglide can deliver in terms of handling and braking. I feel the added mass of the Dyna wants to keep moving in the direction it wants to and the brakes won't get you out of trouble if you get in over your head. So it's comes down to the main type of riding you do if you have to just pick one I think you can find good used older examples from private owners and get both for $10k if you look hard enough.

    Hi Jon, I was hoping you would have shown both bikes one in front of the other, I used to ride a lot of different types of bikes from the late 60's thru the 80's. My last bike was an Electra Glide 1200. This was the time before social media and no body called Sportsters girls bikes. My son purchased an E.G. and I was drooling when he pulled up. So now at the arthritic age of 65 I have been searching craigs list . Found 1) a sportster 48 $6750, 2) Dyna Street bob made to look like a soft tail slim with out the soft tail. $6995, 3) A Fatster which if you don't know is a 1200 Sportster engine made to look like a Fat Boy with wire wheels and fat white walls, , very cool looking and only $5750. In my younger painless days I owned a couple of hard tail choppers as well and hard tail or rear suspension it didn't seem to make any difference. Now in my older years things hurt A LOT, but I want to go ride with my son. So you being a younger guy do you think that the big twins are that much more comfortable?

  • @ThatBobGuy850
    @ThatBobGuy8504 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jon, great video! Funny I found it just now. Quick story: Been a Sportster guy all my life. I'm on my third. Love these bikes! Found a *great* deal on an '06 Street Bob. Didn't need or want it, but couldn't pass it up. Now...uhh...the Sportster is up for sale. Big Twins really are great, no? But! The story ain't over. Friend of mine and I took the Sportster out the other day one last time to get some pictures of it before I sell it. I rode the Sporty, my friend rode the Dyna - did over 100 miles. All the while I'm thinking to myself, "Why am I selling this Sportster? I love it!" The Dyna on the other hand is *really* heavy...and I just don't like that. So I have mixed emotions about it. My friend (who owns a big Kawasaki Vulcan) was like, "If you want to sell this Street Bob, I will buy it right now. I gotta have one of these!" Decisions, decisions... Sportster is probably one of the greatest street bikes of all time. Unfortunately, it's just not a great Interstate highway bike. Nor is it a good two-up bike. I've taken my Sportster from here in Florida to Washington State...twice. Solo, of course. So long-distance *can* be done...but as you say, it's not the optimal bike for that. Bottom Line: I'm going to try to keep both the Dyna *and* the Sportster. P.S. Gotta disagree slightly about the power. My Dyna has the 88 cu.in. (1450cc) twin-cam motor, and it is definitely *not* all that much more powerful than the Sportster. They both "feel" about the same. It has to do with power-to-weight ratios. Sportster revs higher, pulls harder off the light. In an out-and-out drag race, I wouldn't say the Dyna would definitely win.

  • @JonsMotoGarage

    @JonsMotoGarage

    4 жыл бұрын

    I hear ya for sure! When in doubt, keep em both! hahaha! And you make a great point - the power to weight ratio definitely makes a difference. I guess it depends if you're looking at the 883, 1200, 88ci, 103ci, etc. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Rode metrics for 30 years. Last bike was a Yamaha Warrior 1700. It started to be a pain to ride and maintain. No aftermarket and it was too much bike for in town / slow speeds. I wanted to downsize and also get a Harley so I got the Roadster 1200. It feels like an old 650 to me. Not a ton of power but it has enough. It is a little cramped with mid controls. Postage Stamp seat. I can make the Sportster fit me with just a few mods and I did.

    Excellent objective review without any emotional involvement. One size does NOT fit all. Many of us have a preferred riding style, some of us like mountain twisties or Main Street or the highway. Ideally, the potential buyer should buy the bike that fits and handles best for him or her. Never think about fashion like, "How cool do I look on this one?" The best way to decide is to take the bike on a road that is typical of your regular rides. You definitely do not want to finish a long ride and say, "I think I bought the wrong bike." In my case, as much as I love the looks of the Dyna or Softail Low Rider, my Sportster XL883 Standard gives me my best ride in terms of handling, maneuverability and end of the day comfort. I love mountain twisties and hate the highway. Main Street....who cares?

    I've had three Sportsters (two 883's and a 1200) and a Dyna FXD. I absolutely loved all my Sportsters, but you're only riding about 100 miles before you're ready to get off for a coffee break. The Dyna handled like the Sportsters, but you knew it was bigger and heavier. The REAL difference was on the highway. The Dyna just floated along and I could (and did) ride it all day long without the least bit of discomfort. If you're riding rides of a couple hundred miles a day or less, you'll be happy with a Sportster and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. If you plan on doing longer rides, cross country, etc., go with the Dyna.

    The Dyna is a better bike. It has the nimbleness of a small bike for canyon carving, yet the comfort of a larger bike for longer 500+ mile rides. Even when I was a new rider I felt more comfortable on the Dyna. The Sportster is lighter with a higher power to weight ratio and as a new rider I had an eager wrist. The Dyna felt more stable and safer to me as a new and nervous rider. I personally don't think a Sportster is a good starter bike. Also when a new rider feels confident to move up to a larger bike, they'll have to get rid of the Sportster and market for Sportsters is soft, definitely a buyers market
