Dying to Be Apart (Siamese Twins Documentary) | Only Human

Ғылым және технология

In 2003 the world held its breath as two remarkable twins, conjoined at the head since birth, went through a pioneering surgical separation. Ladan and Laleh Bijani didn't survive the procedure, but Dying to Be Apart talks exclusively to the key players in the remarkable drama that ended in their tragic deaths.

😥. How horribly sad. I cannot imagine losing a precious child. I had a miscarriage in 1990, I didn’t think that I would ever get over losing my baby. I got pregnant for my daughter then I almost lost her. I would have lost my mind had I lost her. I feel so bad for anyone who has lost a baby or even grown children. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. I hope who ever has lost a baby or son/Daughter that they have a great support system and they can heal from that horrible tragedy.

Two brave young women made the ultimate sacrifice, which enabled doctors to learn more about these types of surgery so that one day another set of siblings in a similar predicament may be saved. They got their wish to be separated. And I'm sure even after death they do not regret their decision. Kudos also to the brave doctor willing to perform this surgery amidst possible backlash.

In the west our lives are blessed with technology and good health care and for which I am forever grateful but these women reached out to us from an undeveloped country and fought for their lives and although they were unsuccessful and this is so sad I'm sure that what was learnt by the awesome medical staff will help other people who faced with this awful challenge in their lives.

My brother and I fought like cats and dogs growing up. We get along now, but we’re total opposites in personality. If living with a sibling is hard, can you imagine the difficulty of being literally attached to them 24/7?! No way! So sad for them to have had a bad outcome, but they really did make the best decision for their situation and it sure looked like a lot of thought went into the process - by everyone involved.

The government and people of of Singapore are to be commended for their generosity and humanity, and the medical team are above all truly magnificent human beings. They did everything following strict protocol and ethics, and as with any surgery, even minor procedures, there is the risk of serious complications and death. This medical team's work is to be applauded for the attention to detail they instigated before tackling surgery. There was no other choice for these girls to make, and they had to take the chance. Even if they had been born in a so-called developed country, surgery would have failed even if it had been attempted early in their lives. Theirs was a tragic medical condition that had no surgical solution. These girls taught humanity as a whole by their resilience and grace living with their situation, and that is the amazing legacy they left.

You don’t know that if they lived in a country in the U.S that the same outcome would have happened. Most opera😢toons on 4-5 year old twins are successful and theirs would also probably have been successful if it was done at an early age. I have seen young and completed conjoined Siamese twin cases like this and they normally come out alive. They only died most likely because it was done when they were 29 instead of 4 years old.

@@kaitlinschwarz3644 I agree that, if the surgery would’ve been done at an earlier age, it may have been successful. They pretty much said that in the video. However, Singapore is one of the leading medical pioneers in the world. In many ways, they are more advanced in procedures & equipment than the US. Some of our own doctors go there to learn these techniques & advancements. If you walked into their hospitals, you would be truly amazed at those advancements, as well as how they treat their patients there. They actually put care in Healthcare. It would be very arrogant to think that we are so much further ahead in the medical field than every place else in the world.

I am offended by the nasty comments that some people have written about how these ladies’ souls must have gone to hell, because they were not Christian. This attitude is small-minded, and certainly does not reflect well on the religion of those who write such things.

I know exactly what you are saying for I am a Christian and I know that any religion can know God ! When you read about some one saying something stupid like this or that happened to them because they were not Christian , then just ignore them for they are just saying this to get others attention ! Thanks

Actually, the operation was successful. They got their wish to be separated. It was the only real decision that could have been made. To remain attached would have been horrific for them in the event of a stroke or similar ailment. Hopefully the vascular surgeons were able to learn some valuable information that would assist them in future cases, despite the loss of life in this instance.

Wow all those stupid people at the end taking recording and taking pictures with bright flashes of the mother who is obviously traumatized and trying to make sense of what is happening. The mother is trying get out of there covering her face from the cameras. Just to fill their stupid little news holes. Then once they got their pictures they left. They got what they needed. Didn't want to help didn't think of helping didn't support. Nothing. Absolutely disgusting. Yes, the news needed to be covered, by all means, but the execution of getting the news was terrible. Absolutely sickening.
