Dying Stories of Purani Dilli: A Taste of History (EP-07)
In the seventh episode of Dying Stories of Purani Dilli, we try to trace the history of the place through its unique set of foods. We have nihari, rotis and chai but above all we found that food serves as a connection to the Almighty in the area.
There are many versions of Nihari and how it was developed in Delhi. On one hand one believes that when Nadir Shah came to Delhi, it was winters. Most of the soldiers in the battalion were Muslims who never drank alcohol. So, in order to keep them warm, Nihari was developed. On the other hand, some believe that it was under Shah Jahan that Nihari came into existence in Delhi. People of Delhi were suffering from cold, so the King ordered his hakeems to make a dish that’ll solve the problem. So, they made Nihari.
But the most intriguing aspect of the place is where you can feed the homeless while having food at the place. Want to know how? Check out the video

absolutly right!! Niharee was made for the labourers who were employed to make the Mughal buildings. Hw can Niharee be a cure for commn cold??Looks like Puraani Dilli needs to revisit history, but I still love them.

I found it odd that they said that it's made for winter or cold season but Delhi has a maximum of 2- 3 months of winter. Delhi summer however are longer ( ranging from 5- 6 months) . The logic sounds flawed and not so realistic.

Last wale chacha ne kuch bhi history pel diye. Nadir Shah k nam se nihari Bani, aur Tipu Sultan Ko roti pasand thi. Etc. 😀

Lucknow Nihari is totally different from Delhi Nihari. "Nihari" is just a word referring to time of eating, early mornig (breakfast). There are tonnes of meat dishes across India in many cities called Nihari but very different to each other. Delhi Nihari is spicy, hot, also has onions, while Lucknow Nihari is mild and fragrant. Different dishes with different taste.

Legacy what the fuck boy.. Have you seen any ancient architecture like red fort or tejomehal built in Arab nation... Lets come to food, they don't grow onions or any other spices.. They just copy us and instead of lintels they use meat..
