IMPORTANT NOTE: I did not forget Capture One. I shot an entire 20 min segment for this video where I compared DxO PureRAW 2 with Capture One 22. I decided to trim it out for several reasons: 1. The video was already at the 15 min mark and long enough. There's a lot of TLDR now going around and my videos often suffer in views/income/CTR if they are too long. 2. Most users of C1 have their RAW files processed just fine, thanks. So I'm not seeing a huge market for PureRAW 2 for C1 users. However, DxO PhotoLab 5 may be a different story, and perhaps an upcoming comparison between that and Capture One 22 would be a good idea. 3. DxO PureRAW 2 is clearly aimed at Lightroom users, who have had to suffer through worms and not getting their RAF files processed as well as they should be. It's great to see a serious AI-driven alternative now here. Thus, I really wanted to focus to be on Adobe LR users looking to compare it agains the DxO PureRAW 2 plugin. 4. And finally, since you asked, Capture One 22 compared with DxO PureRAW is VERY CLOSE. In my initial testing, DxO is a bit sharper, a bit warmer, and sometimes (I said SOMETIMES) a bit better. However sometimes Capture One is better. So, this clearly needs more testing and, again, thus why a 20 minute segment is not enough for a good comparison between those two programs. Bottom line: as from what I see now, both are great.

It would be a wonderful review and comparison, between C1 and DXOPL. Two great softwares, with a great reviewer. I have both and I stick with DXO. However, C1 have advantages also. Both are great softwares. But, to compare them, be sure to understand how DXO PL Selective Tone works. It's considerably different from the same tools in C1 and LR and some reviewers try it as if it were the same thing.

Thank you for making this video. Just yesterday I spent the afternoon comparing the X-Trans 4 (love my X-S10) raw processing between LR w/o enhance detail, LR w/ enhance detail, DxO PR 2, and CaptureOne 22. I’m a big LR user, and have considered moving over the C1 a few times and just haven’t decided to make the switch. I still consider C1 the gold standard for X-Trans RAW processing. My photography is 90% plus nature and landscapes. There was lots and lots of pixel peeping going on yesterday, and I spent some money on A3+ prints of a few of my favorites to finish up the comparison. Overall, LR w/enhance details and PR2 both stacked up well against C1, well enough to keep me in the Adobe world. Between LR w/enhance and PR2, well, it was a toss-up : sometimes one did better than the other (sometimes the PR2 images were extra crunchy). I’ll be buying PR2 because there were enough times that it produced prints that hit my vision of the scene compared to LR to make the investment worthwhile. Maybe sometime Adobe will make X-Trans processing a first class citizen, C1 has proven that it can be done. Until then, glad we have some other tools in the bag. Thanks again.

I have been using Photolab for a while and On1 Photo Raw. What I highly appreciate with PL is that the interface and the functionalities are straightforward and there is no distraction as there is with On1 where you would always try the effect of some filters. One thing that helped me switch from Panasonic to Fuji was the fact that X-Trans support was beta in the first release of PL5 and there is a full support in the last version. I never gave a try to Captur One, which I am going to give now, but I would very much appreciate your take on PL5. Many thanks!!!!!

Lovely to see someone reviewing DxO software! I used Nik for about 99% of my editing and was crushed when Google harvested it for Snapseed and cancelled Nik. CRUSHED. And then I found out that the team had just kept on going with DxO and, i promise, there was HOLLERING with joy. It's so strange that no one seems to know about this software suite when it is so incredibly flexible and turns out blisteringly beautiful photos. Having just gotten my M1 and (thanks Adobe...) my photoshop + Nik no longer works, it's time for me to finally invest in DxO Nik and i am THRILLED to finally 'have' to do it :D

Fuji X-S10 user here and, personally, I didn't like the PureRaw. It often smudges details in my shots and makes them look too artifical. I've also noticed some colour shift. Sharpness isn't everything in photos and I'd rather have a picture that isn't as sharp, but looks more organic. It's a big pass for me.

Great video Chris. I have been using photo lab 5 a few months now. Deep prime is mostly great but it it can do a little too much noise reduction in some scenarios. I have also noticed with the 10-24 lens is can create circular banding In the night sky. When I use deep prime I find the files can be so clean of noise you have to add back in a little digital film grain .

I purchased DXO PR2 just one week ago after trying it out and love it. Depending on the file I'll leave the sharpening off. Sometimes it makes things a bit crunchy but I love the results otherwise. I've reprocessed quite a few older Nikon files using PR2 as well. I had an X-T3 and sold it but longed for a Fuji camera so purchased a used X100F as an everyday walk-around camera. I especially love what PR2 does for the Fuji X-trans files. I used to use Iridient-X to process the Fuji files, then run them thru Topaz Denoise AI. Now I simply use PR2 and am very happy with the results.

As someone who only uses Capture One after years of using Lightroom Classic, I find this to be massively useful. I tried out the free trial after seeing this video, and it made a 51200 ISO image taken on the XT4 look like it was taken at 12000 ISO, and a picture taken at 12000 ISO look like it was taken at 2000 ISO. Capture One processes raws well (after some testing, the JPEGs generated by the camera were a little noisier than images directly processed through Capture One without other editing) but I found there to be no comparison between extremely high ISO images processed by Capture one versus processed by Capture One after being processed in PureRAW 2 first. The only weird thing I haven't figured out, is that it seems like Capture One doesn't like to apply Fuji film simulations to DNG files. I'm still looking for a workaround to that. Thanks for sharing this awesome tool, and I do hope to see a "scientific" look at how it works with Capture One, since I'm definitely no expert with either program.

Great video, thank you! Being new to the Fujifilm system (X-T4) I admittedly was disappointed when i processed my low light/high ISO images in Lightroom CS6, Adobe RAW Converter or even Capture One (trial version), as I got mushy, noisy images. I am still on my 30 days trial period (2 days left), but it is already very clear that PureRaw 2 will be a certain purchase. And due to habit I will probably end up with an Adobe subscription, as my CS6 suite has reached it's limits and I want to take advantage of the new masking tools in Lightroom. But that would not have been the case had i not discovered PureRAW2. Capture One is a great program, but as it is far inferior for me in RAW file processing compared to PureRAW 2 I stick to what i am accustomed to, even if it takes intermediate steps and larger file sizes.

I totally agree with you Chris, this new program is a must between fujists. My photos (in C1 22) after being "cleaned" by Pure Raw seem like my red bags lenses had gone on a cataracts surgery 😅. I now have a 40Mpx sensor in my X-T2!!! Hahaha!! Speaking about the review, I'd dearly like to hear you about that Viltrox 13mm f1.4 you're keeping on the shelf of your studio... 🤗

Great video! I have found that the color shifting is because Pure Raw2 sends back the processed file with the Adobe Color profile, and does not respect the profile you had assigned originally to the RAF file. You have to change the profile back to what you had before. Also, it changed the color balance. If you want the same color balance you will have to adjust it. Other than that, it seems to be giving me great results with high iso RAF files.

... and to add Iridient X Transformer into the mix. I was much impressed with DXO PureRaw 2 (PR) and purchased it. I am indeed amazed at what it does with those pesky RAF files. LR, which I do like for lots of reasons (the cloud version actually) has never been on good terms with those files. Opinions differ. Most people have issues with sharpening, which start, so the story goes, at the demosaicing phase. Playing with sharpening and noise reduction is a delicate balancing game, with the dreaded "worm effect" often being the end product. Not everyone experiences this, but I do. Maybe it's a function of processing acumen, photo subjects, and expectations. I take street and architecture mostly so I need to maximise the potential of the photos as I get them - no ideal lighting or posing or retakes in my photoworld. But there is a problem with PR. The size of the resulting DNG files, which are beautiful but huge are around 4 times the size of the RAFs from which they are built. At ~100MB each they can fill up space very quickly. "Yes, yes", I hear you say, "this is because of all the extra information in them". I get it, but this does put complexity into the process. Ideally I would like to pre-process ALL RAF files before they hit LR. PR does batch processing very well actually, but this does result in a lot of files I would subsequently cull or rate at "archive" level. This has turned my workflow on its head. Batch processing is out, in favour of bespoke use of PR, and a lot of added complexities. Rewinding a couple of years, I have previously been using Iridient X Transformer to pre-process all my RAF files into DNG files half the size of the PR ones. This is a niche product that does what PR does, though its focus is on the demosaicing. It does have inbuilt sharpening, noise management (and other tools) which are known to do a very good job. No AI involved, but just a lot of attention to computational detail, and strong focus on the Fujifilm X-Trans sensors that cause all the LR problems. To see if it was time for my trusty copy of X Transformer to be retired in favour of PR, I ran some side-by-side tests between it, PR, original RAFs, and for good measure, with the LR enhanced feature applied to each. With respect to detail, sharpness, artifacts, etc, the original RAWs were rubbish compared to all the other options. PR and Iridient pre-processed files were surprisingly VERY similar. Extreme pixel peeping did show some quite minor improvements from PR, but not enough to change the photo's character, or even notice at less magnification (but still at 200-300%). Enhancing PR and Iridient-processed files showed improvements, mainly in increased resolution thanks to the "super resolution" feature. I would only be using that for giant prints I think, and the file size is very large indeed. Original RAF files showed marginal improvement in enhanced mode. The bottom line. Iridient should not be written off in this new generation of AI-powered denoisers/sharpeners. For Fuji files it still delivers 95% of the quality in half the disk space, and its outputs are mostly indistinguishable from PR's. And it does allow me to pre-process all my Fujifilm files and therefore saves a heap of time and complexity in workflow. PR is still a fantastic and ground breaking product, and works on more than just Fuji files. So I will be using it on a needs-basis but sticking with Iridient at this stage.

So after watching this I downloaded the trial to see how things were. Overall pretty nice. I think it showed me I could be doing better at noise reduction in Capture One. Regarding speed, it only took my 9 seconds per image, and my computer is older than yours. The difference? I have a discreet GPU that was no doubt used to speed up things. Maybe the other difference is I’m not using a Mac with the M1 architecture and maybe the code isn’t optimized for that hardware yet. Cheers

I do a lot of non-profit event photography in challenging lighting situations requiring high ISO, and of course ,the challenges of noise. I've used C1 since the Fuji S2 days but I've not been satisfied with the way it handles really high ISO noise (3200 and up). My results using PR2 have been excellent .. Using DeepPrime setting to create output DNGs (huge files .. .) then input into C1 and output JPGs which are very 'clean'. I also use Topaz Denoise AI for lower iso images (just against the output JPGs) ... .Because of the size of the DNGs, after I'm satisfied with the results I delete the DNGs but of course keep the original RAW files. It does take around 25 seconds to process an image in PR2, and I currently have an open ticket with DXO as it can't write the output files to my NAS (directory write-protected... seems to be a possible Windows 10 permissions issue). But an easy work-around. Oh yeah ... in my testing I have to be sure to turn off (set to0) the noise sliders in C1.

I use Lightroom to process my raw files, and then, only when necessary, Topaz Sharpen AI and Topaz Denoise AI to improve sharpness and reduce noise. Both of these programs work extremely well and give the user lots of control over the final look. They also integrate so well with the Lightroom “edit in” function, have a user-friendly interface, and process quickly with my M1 Mac mini.

I picked up the previous version around 6 months ago, thinking it supported Fuji files because their film pack supported them... I was mistaken unfortunately. However I was blown away with what I was able to do with old non-fuji files. Like a photo from a 40D of my sister whacking a piñata on her birthday shot at 1600 ISO. I remember being so disappointed with the photo because you could barely see her face through all the noise. Ran it through DXO and was blown away by how clean it looked. What a time to be alive.

I've been trying Photolab5 for a few days and I must say I'm impressed by the DeepPrime noise management. I tried it on photos taken inside a rather dark abandoned factory and it did a real good job. Keep in mind that it's also possible to use Fuji's original recipes by adding the Film Pack and that's a game changer. There's even an option to automatically use Fuji's camera rendering for Fujifilm images. Those automatic corrections are a bit on the heavy side, to my eyes. It seems like adding clarity, so one's must keep an eye on the amount. Overall I'm very pleased with the results.

Fully agree, i added DxO (actually PhotoLab5, more versatile & for some local corrections, as its kind of U points…) to my Capture One workflow for Fuji when high iso: Perfect to first rely on RAW denoizing by DxO Deep Prime when i cannot shoot at iso160. You may speed up its AI processing time by proper settings: To rely on GPU (32 cores in my MBPro M1Max) instead of Neural engine by default (16 cores). This DxO Deep Prime is a game changer for my street photography by night. But i keep my Capture One workflow (and M1 iPad version is coming soon…).

Mixed results so far, but my biggest concern is DeepPRIME. I some cases the PureRAW/DeepPRIME and PL5 combo has been a game changer with my older X-Trans files. But I've also had some files where the DeepPRIME was too much of a blunt instrument. In some small sensor files (made this past week with my old Fuji X30), the results were really not what I wanted, and I did better with DNGs generated by Iridient and run through Topaz DeNoise AI -- which allows a much wider range of adjustments. Granted, I'm not as much concerned about grain as some people -- and when AI gives you that creamy look, there are sometimes other things that happen in the frame -- really worth you looking around the whole image to make sure nothing important was fiddled with.

On my MacBook Pro (32 gigs of RAM, 32 Graphics core M1 Max) I use DeepPRIME for all my RAF images (with PhotoLab 5). On my iMac (4-core i7 @ 4 GHz) DeepPRIME processing used to take well over a minute per shot, so I used it only for high-ISO shots. The new machine takes under 5 seconds per image. Results are so good it’s almost creepy. I don’t export to DNG (file size!) but to 16-bit TIF). Best raw converter around by quite some margin.

I've been using the 30 day trial of PureRAW 2 for a couple weeks now. I have been using it through Lightroom to reprocess images from my X-T3 and X-T1. I'd say it does a great job in 80% of the files I try it on. The noise reduction especially seems to be top notch. However, I have run into some issues. It seems like about 95% of the images after processing require an adjustment to the white balance to get back where it was - usually adding around +4 Magenta tint gets it close. PureRAW 2 also doesn't seem to keep the "Fujifilm" profiles (Velvia, Provia, etc.) and reverts the image back to Adobe Color. Also, I have come across some examples where PR2 seems to over-correct for lens vignetting and produces over-exposure along the sides of the image. So far, I have noticed it mostly with shots using the 55-200. But I have seen the issue on one shot using the 16-80. I haven't been able to nail down this issue yet. For me, one of the greatest potential benefits of PR2 was the promise that I could use it from inside Lightroom, process the image and return it to Lightroom with all the edits intact. The workflow element is excellent and as I said, the sharpening/noise reduction is amazing. But for many shots I find it almost impossible to get the PR2 processed image to look exactly like my original edit. Some are "close enough" but many are not. And I've yet to prefer the overall look of the PR2 file versus my original editing (ignoring noise). The images with the weird anti-vignetting are close to being unusable. Either way, it is requiring a lot more effort than just waiting for 15-20 seconds for PR2 to process each image in order to re-do my old files. After seeing the noise/detail improvements I was ready to pull out my credit card. But the issues I've noted above caused me to put it back in my wallet. Has anybody else experienced the same thing?

I just tried DXO PureRAW 2 and did side x side comparison with Iridient X-Transformer on the same files. While the noise reduction and basic clarity are definitely better on the DXO PureRAW 2 processed files, the Iridient exports look more like film or the output of my D850 -to my eye at least. Very little difference in detail to Capture One (again IMO) depending on the settings used. I suppose DXO PureRAW does play better with LR Classic though.

Thanks for showing me Pure Raw 2. I bought it and it's a brilliant program. But the funny thing about it is that even though the DNG file is 3 times bigger than the original RAF, the finished images are not bigger. They are even a little smaller from what I can see. An example: One of my images is 32.1 mb in RAF and 106 mb in DNG Pure Raw. The same image in JPG takes up 7.66 mb after the RAF image, but only 6.96 mb after the DNG file. As TIFF files, they are exactly the same size. If you think the DNG files are taking up too much space on the hard drive, you can delete them when they are finished editing. You can always make a new one if you need it again.

I prefer Photolab 5 in combination with Lightroom or Capture one because you can dial down the default deep prime strength (40) there. I set the value to 20 for high ISO shots, and it cleans up the noise very well without losing the fine detail, the default (40) value is too aggressive. For me, it works better than the default noise reduction in Capture one.

Thank you for this interesting review! I noticed a slight colour shift between the raf and dng files.. will the Fuji-film-sims-profiles that you can add in post in for exampel Camera Raw work the same as if you use the raf-file? I mean, if the starting point is slightly different the final result should be aswell? Great with less artifacts, noise etc but if we loose the precise Fuji-simulations I am not sure its worht it :) Take care!

I am C1 user, but really impressed with DxO results. Though tiny difference for low ISO photos, but huge advantage of DxO for low light high ISO images. I think DxO is very useful instrument for selected images. Among downsides of DxO- it is stareater for the astro shots, and one more downside that fuji profiles applied absolutely different for the native RAF and for DNG

The results are great, especially for Fuji files. Even for low ISO, it's better than C1 IMHO and it's much better than the Lightroom default method. What's interesting is that Fuji JPEG is not that far off in terms of sharpness and details (at least on low ISO), which is further testament to Fuji JPEG engine.

Hi Pal2Tech... Thanks for this informative (again) video. So, I followed you and d/l'ed the free version of this software. And I tried on some DNG's of mine. True, it's better especially with sharpness (I never use high ISO so I scarcely have problems with noise). But I wonder if it's worth the very much bigger size every DNG takes after being processed by PureRaw 2! I mean, if you sharpen a bit your RAW into ACR, using the masking slider too, you achieve a very near result without the biggest size. I checked and checked again and again and if -indeed- PureRaw 2 stays ahead in that matter, it's a thin edge (pun intended) and I'm not sure it's worth it. What is you thought abuut this, eventually?

Quick potential fix that might speed up processing significantly for you... One caveat, I am using the full DxO PhotoLab 5. I am assuming, though, that PureRAW 2 uses the same technology and probably even the same codebase for DeepPRIME processing. I'm giving you the settings for PhotoLab, but hopefully similar settings exist in PureRAW and won't be too hard to find. Some background... I also have an M1 Max MacBook Pro. I've been using DxO PhotoLab since October, and for a long time exporting an image with DeepPRIME enabled took 6 to 8 seconds to complete. Then recently it suddenly started taking more like a minute to a minute and a half. I went back and tried some photos that I had previously exported, and found that they took much longer than they had previously. So I contacted DxO and reported the issue, assuming it was a bug in the most recent update. They were able to confirm that they saw it too, and started to research it. A couple of days later, they came back and told me what they'd found - the problem isn't actually in the DxO software, it's a regression in Apple's Neural Engine that was introduced in the MacOS 12.3 update, which significantly slows down DeepPRIME processing specifically of Fuji files (lucky us). They reported it on to Apple, but in the meantime they found this fix for me: 1. Open "Preferences" in the program menu. 2. In the preferences window, select the "Advanced" tab. 3. Down toward the bottom of the tab, there is an option called "DeepPRIME acceleration" - change the value on this from "Apple Neural Engine" to the "GPU" option (on mine, that's "GPU Apple M1 Max" though users of other Mac models will obviously see a somewhat different choice). 4. Close out of Preferences, and then close and re-start the program for the setting change to take effect. Doing that took my processing time back down to 9-11 seconds per photo (so still slightly longer than previously, but *much* better than over a minute!). Hopefully Apple will eventually fix the MacOS issue, but in the meantime this is good enough for now. I'm not certain that this will work with PureRAW, but it's definitely worth a try!

I'll also add that prior to picking up DxO PhotoLab, I had been using Capture One (and prior to that, Lightroom Classic). Once I got going with PhotoLab, I haven't even looked back. I like it so much more than both Capture One and Lightroom. So you should definitely give it a try and do a comparison. (The caveat on that being that to truly unlock the full potential of PhotoLab, you really need to get the FilmPack and ViewPoint add-ons as well, which means it is a very expensive proposition. ViewPoint in particular is awesome, it does the best automatic perspective correction that I've seen. I used the 30-day trials for a month in October and early November, and then picked up the whole set at a significant discount during their Black Friday sale. Not sure if or how often they discount it at other times, but it might be worth waiting for a sale.)

I use photolab with my MFT shots, sometimes. Primarily I use lightroom. I'm confused about the prime / deep prime setting. In Photolab, this is spesfic to noise reduction and is not always needed. Plus you can dial it in to how much you want to use. In pureraw it seems it's either on or off and no real way to control it.

I no longer use LR or PS but other software including C1 but have been using DXO Photolab Elite for some time now 5. I have reached the stage where I am now using PL5 for most of my raw file processing plus NIK collection. What I am interested though is deep prime only works on raw files and it sounds like you are processing raw files in lightroom before sending to DXO pure raw. From what you are saying deep prime is still working on those images? It doesnt if you send DNG files from other apps. Is this correct?

Looks like it works great if you are a pixel peeper. Seems that the complications it adds to the workflow would not be worth the trouble for me. I am moving closer to shooting jpeg + raw and trying to get everything the way I want in the jpeg. I still have the raw file in case I need to make changes that wouldn't be possible in a jpeg. It is definitely an impressive product and I think it is an indication of where the industry is headed. Thanks for the video. I always look forward to your Friday videos.
