DWIGHT HOWARD: From SUPERMAN To Just Another Guy! What Happened? Stunted Growth

Спорт

Last year the NBA released a list of the 75 greatest players in NBA history. Shockingly Dwight Howard was not included on that list. Early in his career he was superman like in Orlando, even took the small market team to the finals. As his on court game and personality grew, he decided he needed a bigger market to display his talent. So, he took them to L.A. Just as Shaq left Orlando for greener pastures and the western conference. Only Dwight did amount to close to what Shaquille O'Neal was with the Lakers and became a journeyman ever since. He did win a championship in 2019 with the team, but at the end of his career, only averaging 5 points and 4 rebounds. A far cry from expectations. WHAT HAPPENED? 2 Reasons Dwight Howard 'SUPERMAN' Growth was Stunted! Stunted Growth

I don’t think that Vince could’ve individually done anything better, other than attending his ceremony in Toronto during the ECF. His biggest downfall was pairing after NJ. He could never catch on with a contender. Dwight is only an underachiever in the greatest centers of all time conversations. SG made a good point with stunt #3, and to date the only person I have seen too yoked up to have a decent form was Karl Malone. He made it work. Howard also has a Little Richard persona that doesn’t mesh well in either era.

This Dude Dwight in my opinion was the last center that was equally as valuable on offense as he was on Defense. Dwight in his prime impacted games like no other… he was extremely athletic and he was incredibly durable up until his back injury. Loved watching him in Orlando and he had a great attitude. Anyone remember , Dwight was one of the first stars that wanted to play in Brooklyn…anyways shout out to Dwight. He always treated the media well and he made the game look fun.

That back injury of his a decade ago was a final big nail of the coffin of his superstar career. That took his athleticism greatly to the effect. Howard and JaVale McGee were an essential part of the Lakers' championship run. Howard's defense against Jokic in the WCF, while scoring 8 ppg on nearly 80% from the field was a key to the team's success. That Laker team actually proved that rim running bigs who could play elite level big man type defense could be essential to an NBA champion. Rim running bigs actually were not phased out of the league, as guys like Clint Capela still play important roles. It's actually post scoring bigs that were dramatically reduced in the NBA, a skill-set Dwight was often criticized for as being too limited. Unfortunately, he did think of himself as a post up guy for many years, despite those limitations, and he balked at becoming just a rim runner for several years as the league phased that out some. Finally though, he did accept his role as just a rim runner during that championship run, which made him a surprisingly important piece on a championship team, just when he had been all but forgotten. For that reason, along with his many years of elite play, he needs to be HOF and considered a top 75 guy. I can think of at least a couple of old timers who might better be left off that top 75 all-time team.

  • @Xolanidj

He definitely lost his confidence in 2012. Dwight is definitely the last of his kind too. It’s crazy to think that just over a decade ago, he and Andrew Bynum were the best centers in the league. It was definitely a snub to not include him in the 75 list, while also including guys who were eligible but did not make the top 50 list. If his career was only 10 years, he wouldn’t made the list. We are talking about a guy who rivaled an older Shaq, and was mentored by Hakeem Olajuwon, he has no choice but to be a traditional center.

I like Dwight Howard, the first few years I thought he was on his way to being an elite player. Really good athlete, awesome level of dictation and a couple of arms that looked like Steel Cables. Maybe he should have stayed in Orlando, it seems after they made the Finals in 2009 they and his career sort of fizzled. I'm sure his Stock Portfolio must kick some tail and I bet he's happy, I just have a feeling he should have done more. I don't mean to slag on the guy I just don't see him as an all-time top 75 NBA Player. The feeling was Dwight was lacking in work ethic but it's tough for us to say when we weren't there. Bro Dwight made a few good plays for that chip. If you don't give him credit for that chip you gotta do the same to a lot of other guys. How much did Kidd really do for the Mavs for that chip? Barrea did more but do you take his ring away? Love your vids! This is half the fun of NBA fandom..Discussing the game with people who really watch it.

Great video. To me he is one of the most overrated players in the NBA. During his prime he was by far the best center in an era of extremely weak centers and he rarely dominated as he should, he should have been averaging 30ppg.not 22. In the 90s he would have been at best the 6th best Center in the NBA. Never worked on his game, just extremely athletic, never took winning seriously. Appreciate this one SG

If it weren't for injuries Dwight would have been at least a clint capela, even after declining Dwight's always been in great shape, hes an atheltic freak, even today. The third reason should be back injuries. He hasn't been the same since. Peace

Enjoy your content family! Will you be doing one on Andre Iguadalo as well since he and Dwight are the only ones still playing from that 2004 draft class? It’s ok to have expected more but that shouldn’t diminish his actual accomplishments. Now we could go on about how he’s in top 20 in career rebounds and blocks. He’s got 3 DPOY award etc… his career has been really one that should be heralded. The average NBA career is 4.5 years this guy averaged a double-double for 14 straight years. In fact per 36mins he’d still be averaging a double double! He’s in his 18th season! If we diminish this level of work what will we have to appreciate. Wish you would have framed this with a bit more respect for the work. JC you hooped come on fam! You lightweight on some Frank Isola 💩

The Dwight / Kobe issues wasnt about both guys wanting to be the alpha. It was actually somewhat the opposite. Kobe wanted Dwight to take up the responsibilities that he thought a champion needed. He wanted him to lead. I mean to be his #2 of course but still be a leader. He wanted him to work hard. He didn’t think Dwight took basketball seriously enough.
