Dwarf Fortress - Taming the Wilds // EP1
Ойындар
Dwarf Fortress is a construction and management simulation game where you play in a procedurally generated world where the player indirectly controls a group of dwarves in an attempt to construct a successful and wealthy fortress. I'll be playing methodically, covering many of the game mechanics and building aesthetically and efficiently.
The settings of this series is default world generation playing Fortress mode. The embark location is in Untamed Wilds with Flux Stone and without Aquifers. The starting dwarves are random and the population is set to a low cap, but I will be increasing it over the course of the series. The goal is to create a secure and wealthy fortress, with no restrictions or rules. Occasionally decisions will be left to Twitch polls and important characters will be raffled.
I am not looking to be told how to play, I am fully aware I am new to the game and as I mention in this episode and in the credits I prefer to learn at my own pace. Please keep that in mind when making comments, thank you!

I was a bit disappointed when I saw your comments in discord, stating that it's on your veto list, when I checked just after the steam release. Super happy you had a change of heart and I'm excited to watch/support this series and what's to come.

@@Rhadamant hell, if not for DF, Minecraft wouldn't likely exist. So if argue that's at least 2 genres that can trace their origins back at least in part to DF.
Been following this game for what feels like decades. Anyone else remember when it was a strait 2D dig into the mountain side and you were always worried about loosing a dwarf to a river flood, frogman raid from the bottomless chasm or a siege by angry pachyderms? Or the relief you felt when you managed to hit just the right spot in the obsidian wall that DIDN'T cause the magma river to flood your fortress and kill that one particular dwarf you've been saving this whole time as a sacrifice for just this occasion? Still wish that some of the MORE fantastic elements in the world-gen were kept through the various iterations, but Dwarf Fortress will always have a spot on my hardrive.

My pleasure dude!
Build your fortresses vertically on many levels rather than horizontally on a few levels. 20 levels on the Z axis is the same as 20 squares on the horizontal axis, but in the first instance, a dwarf can access 20 levels of goodies in the same time it takes them to go 20 squares on one level which might only be one or two stockpiles. If you have a stockpile right below a workshop connected by a staircase, the items might only have to go 2-3 squares vs. across your whole base in a spread out design. This also saves a dwarf having to path all the way through your fortress every time an item is needed. Horizontally spread out fortresses will die to fps drop eventually. You should also designate high traffic areas to save some fps. Having a narrow tunnel entrance to your base isn't as important as you might think despite what almost every tutorial tells beginners. You can actually have as open an entrance as you want; you just have to wall it off with constructed walls which are always indestructible. Then you just need the drawbridge to finish off the wall and you're good. I used to do the narrow hallway entrance but now I go with wide open caverns where I'll put all my farm plots and related workshops which I'll wall off completely. Then I'll just do a short hallway to a 3x3 room which becomes my main up/down staircase that the fortress is build around. Another thing that will save you in the long run is walling off mined out areas you're not using anymore. The pathing code then has to look through fewer squares; it also cleans up your fortress. This is another advantage of vertical fortresses built around one or two main central stairways. The third suggestion is to take some time to make your rooms more interesting or unique. Add natural pillars (that can be smoothed and engraved) or nooks for statues and you'll save yourself a lot of malaise looking at a boring blocky fortress for hours. I work off a common design set where I plan out a stock blueprint of a few types of rooms in my head, then I use the same room design for every room of that type. I.e. my barracks always looks the same, the residential layer always looks the same, the stockpile/workshop layers always look the same: makes things a lot easier to identify when I'm flicking up and down Z levels. With dwarf residential rooms, all they need is a 1x3 containing a bed, cabinet, and door. Dwarves won't care about anything beyond this unless they are nobles. Later on you can swap out the old furniture for better-made copies to give the dwarves happy thoughts.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain these concepts to me, and I think its also important to note that a lot of the design I put into this series are PURELY for aesthetics, and I also make this clear and say it aloud in both the description of the video and I also verbalize it, it is also important for me to point out something you may have missed in the description, so here it is: "I am not looking to be told how to play, I am fully aware I am new to the game and as I mention in this episode and in the credits I prefer to learn at my own pace. For new players, "sand" is farmable. It's usually the first underground layer below a vegetation abondant area and you can build farm plots on it. It's counter-intuitive, but I've seen a lot of people struggeling to find "soil" in the beginning. Also, a small tip, don't build your farm right at the entrance, dig some levels down and then make another way up to your farm, so it's more protected.

Light Aquifer very easy to dig thru. Just need some stockpile with logs or blocks (dwarfs carry faster then raw rock pieces) near carving stairs. Then dig one aquifer layer with stair, dig one next tile on each straight side of border tile of stairs, like for 1x1 stair dig 1 tile north 1 east 1 south 1 west and then fill all of them with wall, so you get 3x3 straight cross with stair at center without water leaking. Now you can dig lower layer. Same for 2x2 stair and so on. Heavy aquifer much harder to dig thru, but light very easy.

I’m pretty new to this and I have a few different perspectives to stuff said in the intro. Scare minerals doesn’t hurt trade - unless you mean it makes it too easy. I haven’t played on those other settings much so I’m not sure. But it definitely doesn’t hurt trade. I had to set the economy to hard mode just to help not get too wealthy too quickly. Aquifiers are also pretty useful. A little tedious sometimes but it’s not hard for a novice player to wall them up. And they provide water even really deep. Dig too deep too fast? The first thing I do is dig deep and then there’s a nice (but not too hard) challenge of getting the initial things setup nice and deep. It is a bit harder but it beats making a whole civilisation close to the surface and then relocating! Anyway … it’s all subjective. That’s the best thing about this game. There is no “right” way to do it. Just saying, even as a novice player I had no problems with the above. Well, no huge ones anyway. Some challenges. … oh yeah … you don’t need steel as a novice player. You don’t really even need metal! But copper is great. Steel is for really kicking butt. It’s not necessary. I played heaps with my whole militia decked out in bone and shell armour with traded weapons!

Once you figure out aquifers you can make frozen fortresses in the far north. That's what I do. I prefer heavy aquifers with cold to frozen temperatures. I always try to embark with a heavy aquifer because it essentially makes your fortress siege proof if you tap it for your farms and wells. You can also make yourself a giant indoor lake for some safe(er) fishing.
@Rhadamant
8 ай бұрын
Neat!
Aquifer isn't just underground water. It's moist ground blocks that infinitely produce water in surrounding tiles. 2 layers of wall will stop the water flow, or you can just mine the tile out to stop it from producing water. An aquifer will continue producing water for the Z level it is on until full. If water is lost or used it will refill again until that Z level is full. Digging will be immediately halted if you find a block is an aquifer block. this can cause issues if you are trying to make stairs upwards (see at end of comment) Sometimes you can luck out and not have them intrusive, and other times you can run into multiples on various Z levels. They are awesome for a constant functioning well, or creating moats/pools. This video was inadequate at explaining how much of a pain aquifers can be. That is the distinction to be made from actual water underground which you almost always will have in caves. What will happen is your dwarves will make a stair that is level with the Z level, which prevents the construction of an up stair. Trying to resume this means you will need to craft a stair, but you can't craft a stair case going up if there is floor above it. This issue does not exist in the original game (non-steam version).

You bet
for any new people to DF, technically, having your fort mostly vertical around a central staircase (2x2 or 3x3 of stairs) is the most efficient way to build your fort. spreading out on one Z-level does look cooler, but it is way slower for your dwarves to get around. also a lot more digging to dig hallways. you can wall off your traders post on the surface, and then just build everything straight down.

@@Rhadamant yeah, it wasn't a criticism. Just meant that if you go for the central staircase, it is possible to build it on the surface and wall it off instead of doing a ramp thing. New players, don't worry about light aquifers they're very easy to deal with. Settle in a calm/wilderness forest, lost of wood, lots of plants. If you can, favor a brook because your dwarves can walk through it. Also settle near your civ, you will want migrants and trade.

Just found out about the steam release and immediately wondered if you were going to make a series and of course you did! Very interested to see more df content from you. Was watching some other 'tubers but none of them have the ability to tell a good story with the game like you do in rimworld. Hoping it will transfer well back to the OG.

Actually, not bringing an anvil can be pretty smart to free up points for other important things! If you set out to do some crafts (or just overproduce and sell food) to the first dwarven caravan, you'll easily be able to afford one or two as well as other necessities. Yes, that means no metalwork until autumn, but usually you won't need metal wespons before then anyways. Just secure your fortress with bridges and cage traps and you're good! :) except they have changed major things for the steam version that's my usual go to. And if you don't feel secure not having a military early on, use crossbows, they (and bolts) cam be made out of wood. Please don't take this as being told how to play though, it's meant as a tip for your next embark :) Looking very much forward to how you conquer the complexity of this game.

I am suggesting that if you're brand new to Dwarf Fortress don't go messing with things, just embark default. Knowing nothing means you can't make informed decisions about preparing carefully or what to bring, just play.
Any advice to know how to deal with agitated birds both normal and giant that just endlessly float in the sky for years on end and prevent new creatures from showing up? Tried making watch towers 6 z levels high around the place to try and shoot them down or scare them off, hunters to hunt them, etc. with no luck.

I'm sure somebody has already mentioned this, but you can designate digging plans as "Blueprints" which can be marked but not be dug out.

Regarding minor temples/shrines, would it create synergies to build temples near the various workshops to gods corresponding to the work of those workshops?
@Rhadamant
Жыл бұрын
As far as I am aware there's no synergy to be had for the placement of temples except to make sure it doesn't take too long to travel there ( like don't make a dwarf have to go in a pilgrimage to get there )
Am I the only one who likes light aquifers? They are super easy to deal with and mean that you don't need to use surface water or dig to the caverns too early.

5:32 Fundamentals: - Dig into the side of a mountain - Construct a drawbridge closing into the side of the mountain - Construct a lever - Link the lever to the drawbridge - Pull the lever after everyone is inside - You won, you're safe Pro tip for your inventory management, especially regarding wood: Do not cut just ALL wood (except to piss of elves). Concentrate one one particular kind of wood to use for crafting and burn every other type to charcoal

Nothing I do is informed by what others do because I have no idea how other people play Dwarf Fortress. I've never played until like a week or two ago and I'm entirely self taught by DF wiki and the in game tutorials (plus trial and error playing). In this way whatever is 'meta' is something that means absolutely nothing to me. I realize in the case of a trade depot one obvious solution is to leave it on the surface and wall it in rather than accommodate a ramp for it, but I don't like the aesthetics of that. The people who accompany the trade caravans reference the splendor of your fortress so having them stand outside in the dirt makes little sense.
Goodluck from a fellow DF player.

This series is purposefully mod-free. If you're new to the channel every new game I play is always 100% vanilla with no exceptions. Mixing mods into a series needlessly confuses people who are new to the game because it becomes unclear what is vanilla mechanics and what is modded mechanics.
I tried and tried to do my ramps how you did and no matter what they wouldn't go down further than the channel. If I kept channel selected and kept building another in front and below the previous they'd continue down. What did I do wrong? I even selected the same options and the exact same placement as you did. You only used channel for the initial dig and then did the rest with the ramp option. How does that work?

You have to envision them as steps. Down one, over one, down one, over one and so on.

Hey, that was surprisingly fun too watch. I've played some earlier iterations of DF but never truly got into fortress building. (in fact, I've spent more time experimenting with world generation and tinkering with different creatures in the game files, rather then actually making a fortress). Will likely tune in for more. Btw: how about using tools that allow you to have an isometric view of your fortress and the lands around it? I don't think you can functionally integrate them into the playing process, but even having a visualization tool to check now and then is nice. It would really help the audience to better understand what they are looking at, IMO.
@Rhadamant
Жыл бұрын
This is a vanilla series, no such tools exist without mods, right?
@ayrnovem9028
Жыл бұрын
@@Rhadamant I wouldn't call them mods. Rather, they are 3rd party quality-of-life interface applications. You can switch them on, make some pretty screenshots, and go back to vanilla if you prefer it that way. After checking out the forums, looks like DFHack is in the process of being updated to the current version of DF. And Stonesense (which is the most sensible 3d visualize tool) runs on the basis of the DFHack package. Will likely take a couple months.
