Today we are reviewing the most anticipated square gshock in recent years!
not only does it feature heart rate monitor, but also comes with the MIP screen, a huge leap forward compared to regular LCD found in regular models.
despite it's limitations refresh rate wise, not being able to display 1/100th of a second in the Stopwatch mode, it offers superior legibility and is the first negative g-shock that you can ACTUALLY read in all conditions!
Called Smartwatch killer and and Apple iwatch killer, only to later be called garbage, it is definetely a polarizing watch.
The watch is loaded with regular G-shock functions like Stopwatch, countdown timer, 5 alarms, and world time function.
on top of that, it comes with a wide range of fitness functions including heart rate monitor, blood oxygen levels, step tracker, running mode, walking mode, gym mode, interval timer, sleep monitor, calories burned, notifications from your phone, phone finder and many others!
size wise, it is just a tad bigger than a regular square with only the thickness being noticeable due to the protruding sensors.
the strap features more holes than a regular one offering better fit for everyone.
it comes with both a USB charger and solar power.
Solar alone is enough if you use HR monitor only during exercise or if you turn it off, as it is the only function that draws more power than the solar can deliver.
having everything on 24/7 gives you about a week to 10 days of battery life

Something I admire about Casio G-Shock is that they aren’t trying to be Apple, or Garmin, or anything else. They kind of go by their own mantra and they understand their user base. When people compare to those other type of smart watches I think they miss the point. G-Shock is all about sport watches that can take abuse and just keep going. You aren’t ever going to get an Apple watch with 200m water resistance.

My biggest complaint with the G Shocks are the recessed buttons. I get why they did it, but I have never accidentally hit a button on any of my other Casio watches and caused an issue, even on the 1500 which has HUGE buttons and they stick out quite a bit. That alone makes me not wear my G Shock as much as some of my other watches. Actually, now that I mention it, a MIP display on the 1500 would be amazing. It's my favorite watch of the collection of Casio's I have but my negative display model is just hard to read sometimes.

Not sure why the hate for this watch. It’s a throwback watch with some modern features, at $300 it’s hardly crazy expensive or even the most expensive g-shock. I bought it for looks mostly and also I don’t use that much smart features. The measurements so far in the week I used it, seem to generally match up with my Huawei GT3. My worry is the battery so far. I had it for about a week. Had about 3 bars of charge when I took it out of the box, and today it’s on the last bar. I doubt I can make it last a month on a charge as I hoped.

I've been following the many user reviews over at the G-Shock subreddit and the consensus seems to be: it looks spectacular, but as soon as you start to interact with its extra features, you'll be facing issues at some point. I've seen reviews that show the watch display a 'please wait' pop up for 10 seconds, while doing something in the background. Really? And there's that ridiculous USB charger: a giant clothes pin on a wire. Wireless charging too difficult, Casio?

Make the 5610 with this display and we all buy it in a second, why even bother with smart watch stuff and apps and heart rate monitors? I think CASIO is not dumb and they know perfectly what their audience and know exactly what they want: as I said before, make a 5600 with Tough Solar, Multiband 6 and the fancy MIP display and you have a winner. So far I am still not convinced to buy it even though it has arrived into the store for my country for 280€. I think CASIO want to move on into the future of digital horology, but their fans - all of us - do not want.

There are many out there that are close, but all are lacking something that I want. Then again, I like to swap out watches often. So, it's not that big of a deal. I think Casio should just purchase Polar, and take some notes from other industry leaders in fitness tracking, like Garmin. At the current state, the software is the biggest problem.
