Dutch - The Forgotten Holiday Classic Of John Hughes - Reel Talk

Well I'm a day later than planned, but when it comes to Thanksgiving stuff sometimes its even better the next day after punching an old lady in the face for a Black Friday door buster.......not that I condone such things....
Anyway I am proud to present my first edition of Reel Talk!
This time we are taking a look at the at the 1991 road comedy "Dutch" which is in my opinion the forgotten holiday classic of noted filmmaker John Hughes. Not received well critically or commercially at the time, this movie is vastly underrated and in my attempts to figure out why I ended up taking a little stroll through the career and catalog of its creator. I hope you enjoy the trip through some essential 80's comedies, and by the end of this you feel compelled to add this movie to your holiday rotation.

I grew up on this movie. It was on HBO all the time when I was a kid. Me & my older brother loved it! Still do, tbh. The motel scene when he says "I think this makes us even." was such a well acted scene, especially Ed O'Neill and the truck driver who seemed mortified

Totally agree! I still try and watch this on or near Thanksgiving every year. You’re right the motel scene is so well done for all the little things you pick up in the acting. I never understood some of the fine intricacies of things in this movie when I was young like the look Ed O’Neill has on his face when he realizes these people that very easily could have drove them the rest of the way home just dropped them at a homeless shelter.

Well now I want to watch it! Came from the Bloodsport videos and I can see some real talent here. Looking forward to the Van Damme ranking video.

Flaws aside, I love Dutch. For me it's a tradition to watch Planes, Trains And Automobiles and then Dutch on Thanks Giving and Trading Places, Uncle Buck (though not technically a holiday movie) A Christmas Story and a few others on my b-day which is December 25th. Planes, Trains And Automobiles hotel scene was filmed about five miles away from my home which you can see I-55 in the background.

John Hughes was definitely a victim of his success in the teen comedy genre. But I love his entire catalogue.
