Happily those wars were a long time ago. I was based on the Dutch-German border near Roermond many moons ago. Many an evening was spent at the 'Oranjeboom' pub.

Queen Elizabeth II is hilarious, when she got fed up with the pics she just said let's go in and left. Boom! Gotta love that woman.

Did you know King Willem Alexander has two jobs? First he is king of the Netherlands, but also a Pilot with the Dutch airline KLM. He made this public in 2017 after keeping it a secret for 21 years. Even today, he is on the flight-deck with KLM two days a month on the 737 fleet. While talking to passengers, he never gives his name, but provides the usual information, flight times to destination, temperatures and so forth, I think that`s pretty cool :)

I loved how gracious King Willem-Alexander was here (as well as Queen Elizabeth, of course!). A great state visit with no one blundering in front of the Queen this time, and someone inspecting the guard, who seemed to know what he was doing!

Camilla seems to know just what to do, following not too far behind. And, she does it will quiet dignity. It’s all so over the top but if you do it well....... Actually, his mother Beatrix (who is a distant cousin of Elizabeth ) became a queen in 1980. 38 years ago. She did do a state visit 2 years after she took the crown. He has only been king for 5 years now. It's his first state visit. They do visit every once and awhile. And do attend royal weddings and funerals etc on both sides. A state visit is just something else than a social visit. More decorum. The dutch aren't that much into a lot of decorum ;-)

Read earlier In 2013, when they were just crowned they stayed at Windsor Castle with Elizabeth for a while. Not an official state visit. Just a social one as the new king and queen visiting another queen and family member. ;-)

I cannot speak for the Dutch monarchy but for the British monarchy, they were funded through the Crown Estate's revenues (25% will go to the royal family, 75% will go to the British government per the Sovereign Grant that replaced the 1760-2011 Civil List that dates back to King George I), so no, they don't use taxpayers' money at all even a single penny, none.

@@gordonsmith8899 Well the dutch monarchie is rich in their own right ,one of the richest monarchies they are shrewed bussines people. and actualy earn a lot of money for the state due to state vissits taking their trade minister and representatives of several large companies with the,. they get an alowance from the state to maintain a staf and the royalpalace, Unfortunatly some have the misguided idea that a president is cheaper than a royalfamilie . forgetting all expenditures still have to be payed. 200 years ago we elected a constitutianal monargie changing from a republic to kingdom to finaly get rid of all the tensions of republicans and orangist .
