Hallo bart,ik woon in Frankrijk en kom uit Suriname,Ik heb een vraag voor u. Waarom zegt u soms f voor v en soms v voor v? Ik houd van uw lessen,ze helpen me om m'n nederlands niet te vergeten, want in Frakrijk vind ik niemand om nederlands te praten, alvast bedankt voor uw antwoord.

This is still probably the hardest area of Dutch grammar for me to get (after adjective endings), and it's because I studied German for so many years before I began studying Dutch. The rules for German word order in clauses are a little different -- the German equivalent of "want" (weil) requires the working verb in the second clause to come at the END of the sentence, and the German word for "dus" ("also") requires inverted word order in the second clause. So my instinctive reaction is to follow German word order regarding these two conjunctions rather than Dutch word order. And don't get me started on the trouble I have with subordinating clauses in Dutch, since I tend to apply German rules there, too. The Dutch word order just sounds so wrong to my German-trained ear! :(

Lee Cox What are you talking about. This was the easiest area of Dutch grammar for me, precisely because of my former knowledge of German. Dutch and German are so alike, specially in word order. That helped me a lot when learning Dutch because I already knew German and I could get the grammar very fast without re-learning the "complex rules" of subordinate clauses, conjugated/auxiliary verbs and participles position (and formation), subject-verb-subject "marriage", infinitives position, pronouns position, adverbs position, and a long etc... man, this is all the same for both languages and sound so right to my German-trained ear. Learning Dutch is like learning German but declension free. I would say that "denn" is more an appropriate German word for the Dutch "want", both meaning "because" and taking position 0 in the sentence. On the other hand, I would say Dutch "omdat" is the partner for German "weil" both meaning "because" but requiring a subordinate clause and taking position 1. Your previous knowledge of German should be a lot of aid for you, and not hindering your learning by any means.

I know what I said, and I meant every word of it. German rules of syntax quite often interfere with my Dutch because the rules regarding word order are different in the two languages (particularly in subordinate clauses), even though they are closely related. Consequently, what may actually be correct in Dutch sounds just plain WRONG to my German-trained ear, and it's a very difficult reaction for me to overcome.

Hi, it's better to compare the German 'weil' with the Dutch 'omdat' (and not 'want'). They mean the same and have the same word order. Next, the Dutch conjunction 'dus' can also be followed by inversion word order.
