    Another Charlotte Boy! Dusty Rhodes must have an IQ of about 150. He has a keen mind! I saw Dusty at the 7/11 on Milton rd in 1986. Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Dick Slater, Tully Blanchard, Abdul the Butcher, Rocky King, Magnum TA, and 200 other pro wrestlers lived here.

    I watched everything I could find on tv back then. Loved the variety we in the 80s. JCP/NWA, AWA, UWF, and WWF all had their own unique style. Didn't get to see WCCW or CWA, but I'm sure it was the same thing. Now everything is simply either WWE or a WWE impersonator.

    I never had access to JCP while it was still an active promotion. My local cable provider was in dispute with Turner Broadcasting and refused to carry any of his networks until around 1991. So I only knew of JCP and later WCW through the magazines. In time I was able to access a great deal of JCP broadcasts and came to regard them as my favorite wrestling promotion of all time.

    Lol, the memories flooding back. I am 50. I used to go to my Nan and Trunk's almost every weekend for a year during Crocket Promotions. I just wanted to say something other than JCP it took a few to put it together lol. We are talking early early 80's. Grandparents were rich and had every station known to man. I grew up in Louisville, KY so Jerry Lawler and Fabulous Ones were my world. I was in awe of Jake Roberts, Ted Dibease, and countless others. But it felt much more gritty and real compared to the circus of WWF at the time. I loved both and still do. I watched Southern wrestling for nearly a year before I saw WWF and my suspicion of it being entertainment went from not sure to fact.

    The war between the localized wrestling territories and the nationally promoted WWF was lost after “WrestleMania III” because after that event wrestling became synonymous with WWF the way cola is to Coke. By that point WWF has syndication, cable, broadcast and PPV. They also had a stranglehold on merchandising and marketing on a national scale. There was no way for the “little guy” to compete with them at that point. The localized territories had a very small window to get their houses in order and push back against WWF but were unable to build the infrastructure necessary to mount a true offensive. It was over by “WrestleMania III”. JCP kept running for another year because they didn’t realize the game had been called.

    Great analysis and being publicly traded gave them almost unlimited funds. To add to that, WWE network put the dagger in the heart because they no longer needed to be scared of "television" canceling them. 100% bullet proof now.

  • @andrewbecker3700
    @andrewbecker3700Ай бұрын

    Verne and Vince Sr. did things in a somewhat controlled way. With territories being the only real divisions in wrestling. NWA getting bought by Turner and becoming WCW on TBS, a cable channel. Changed the game. Now you had southern wrestling being watched all over the country. Vince Jr. knew he had to make a major move, or face losing all his talent to Turner. The rise of wrestling during that era was truly the American Dream. Can't ever see it being like that golden era again. I grew up in Milwaukee WI. on AWA every Saturday morning. Only in the 80's did wrestling become mainstream. Cable television.

    He doesn't mention that with only two companies, where would the new talent come from? How would they get to develop and improve if there was only the big time, and nowhere profitable new talent to develop? They should have aligned with Jarrett, Lawler, Florida, The Fullers, the Watts, and The Von Erich's to figure out how to keep the South and Southwest there own. There were millions of pro wrestling fans in the South who would have made them millions.

    Dusty Rhodes was a bigger draw than most wrestlers at that time. Despite him being out of shape, he was a star. NWA was great but targeted a more mature audience. When they got involved with MTV it was over basically because everybody that was into pop culture watched that channel. The NWA had better wrestlers hands down, and was the superior product. The WWF/WWE had a huge media presence and they marketed all the wrestlers on their programs as superstars, rather they were or not, and Kids believed it because it was drilled in their head over and over again when they watched. I personally never subscribed to that viewpoint because regardless of what we may think of DR’s creative, he wasn’t the bottom line when it came to expenditures and the day to day operations of JCP. The Crocketts, in particular Jim Crockett Jr. could’ve yanked DR’s cord anytime they chose to and they never did. They allowed him to create and book with full consent so to me the failure of JCP was ultimately not on DR.
