Her boyfriend who died John Cazale probably has the shortest and most impressive filmography of anyone. The Godfather I and II, Deerhunter, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and thats it. He was only in 5 feature films.

@@JuanCarlos-wr8so - People say what a great Actor John Cazale was. Al Pacino said he learned more about Acting from John Cazale than anyone else. I don't remember him too well from The Deerhunter ( I haven't seen that Movie in years) or the Conversation. But I thought he played the same type of Schmiel character in The Godfather MOvies as well as Dog Day Afternoon. It would have been interesting if Cazale didn't die so young and he could have played different characters- stronger and more Heroic characters.

It's so funny that his ego wouldn't permit him to tell the full version about the director using Meryl's script...over HIS (and everyone elses) Hoffman was convinced that his would be chosen and was deeply upset and offended that Meryl who was far less experienced and a relative newcomer had written a better script (it would be interesting to know whether the 'slapping' event happened before or after this). They are both suspiciously polite about eachother in interviews which says it all really.

They didn't like each other and it's kinda sad, but I believe that really provided to the brilliance of this movie and their respective performances. At the end when he tells her that she looked terrific, she was taken aback because such kindness was rare on his part, and her soft surprise really provided to the beauty of the scene and the movie. Kramer Vs. Kramer is brilliant.

Meryl has never forgiven him for slapping her face really hard off screen in a patronising effort to 'help' her get into 'the zone' prior to the scene where she leaves him. They have never worked together since and don't actually like eachother. He was also really upset and angry that the director chose Meryl's script over his for the courtroom scene, he'd invited all major cast and production staff to each write a version of Meryl's speech and Meryl's was by far the best one.

Yes, totally understandable. God, I would be bitter, too. Kate Jackson was/is a very talented and committed actress. Sadly also very underrated. Just because she was a Charlie's Angel? So unfair. The fact that she landed that role on "K vs K" because director Robert Benton had seen her on „Charlie’s Angels“ speaks volumes about her acting skills and charisma! The "Kramer" team wanted "somebody who has an enormous presence and skill“. Robert Benton: "In the spring of 1978, we had meetings with Kate Jackson [to play Joanna Kramer]. She was terrific, but the network began throwing up obstacles because of their scheduling for Charlie's Angels. We said, "Sooner or later, they are going to make it impossible.“ Which is exactly what the CA producers Spelling and Goldberg did... Shame on them! In 1981 Kate Jackson did "Making Love" a controversial and ahead of its time movie. Since the topic was homosexuality the movie didn't do well at the boxoffice although it was a very good and important movie. The cast was awesome with Kate Jackson, Michael Ontkean and Harry Hamlin. Jackson's performance was Oscar-worthy but sadly she missed a nomination by only one vote.

Hoffman was more of a method actor, similar to the way Daniel Day Lewis is. On Marathon Man supposedly he stayed awake for over 30 hours before shooting one of his scenes in the dentist chair to portray a man confused and terrified by what was happening to him and also something about asking them to hold him under water longer to make the scene more believable. These types cannot be the most easy actors to work with as they will stay in character the whole time , pushing themselves. I am guessing they expect their co stars to do the same

Waaaaaaay funny.......Dustin talks about Meryl like they were BFF's while they were shooting KRAMMER VS KRAMMER. Listen to Meryl's version of the story, she couldn't stand the lil fucker.....he cracked her across the face + smacked a wine glass that shattered almost right into Meryl's face. Both times while the camera was still rolling. To be fair, she also mentioned although Dustin's not 'fun' dude to work with, he's 'gifted'. Love & Respect__________mykey from toronto

    1) I'm sure he was doing drugs at the time, he's said as much. 2) I'm sure he hit her in a drug addled state. 3) He may very well not have told her about his plan to do so 4) It did become part of the performance. 5) At that time safe actors didn't work. when acting is safe, it's predictable and dull. Safe acting is now more in vogue, because the excitement comes from the CG, not the risks the actors take 6) I don't think people realize what actors mean when they say they take risks. people aren't predictable, they do stupid things for reasons only they can fathom. as an actor to find those reasons means finding something stupid to do that is meaningful. In order to do that it takes finding a lot of stupid things to do that are meaningless and refining it down to the best ones. Taking risks, early in your career, means giving performances and doing things that probably should make everyone hate you.

There's NEVER an excuse to hit another actor without it being scripted, rehearsed, or talked about beforehand. And anyway, acting slaps are NOT supposed to be full on slaps or even make contact at all (depending on the angle the shot is being filmed). That's not what it means to take risks. Not even close.

I learned this the hard way. I was in a play with an egotistical co-star and in the play he slaps his wife (me), but he actually hated me and the slaps were real. When someone hates you and they slap you, you REALLY feel it. That coupled with the fact that i tried to resolve this tension between us so we can properly communicate because communication is key in anything, but he refused to talk to me. On the last night of the show, I slapped him back after he had slapped me. The director and the audience loved it apparently, but I knew better. I still feel regretful 'til this day- even though he had it coming.

He yelled stuff about John's cancer and death, and said horrible things to her. He was a complete dick.

In "Kramer" story goes in the final climactic scene when Meryl comes down the elevator to give up her parental rights, Hoffman didn't like the way she played the scene. He wanted her shedding tears to make it more dramatic. When she didn't cry, Dustin SLAPPED her to get the desired results. Neither actor has ever denied this when asked about it during promoting Kramer, but reporters don't dare to bring it up anymore after all this time. If true, it speaks volumes about the A-Hole Hoffman is and his so-called "method acting" ! Nowadays an actor can get fired for this behavior. The class act that Streep is, she has never badmouthed the actors she's worked with no matter how difficult they were tho Julia Roberts drove her crazy while working together in "Osage August". They don't love Streep in Hollywood for nothing, you know !

Streep's character in Kramer Vs Kramer is very unsympathetic. In fact her character is a real jerk. Immature, selfish, self centered. The studio wanted her for the part that Jobeth Williams played but Streep wanted the other part. Streep herself has said that in the script her character was even more unsympathetic but that she managed to cut out some of that. Watching the film you wonder what Ted Kramer ever saw in her in the first place.

For my money he does not come close as the living greats we still have or in comparison to anyone else in the past. He was a navel-staring method actor that Mike Nichols ideally cast for The Graduate. He is forever Hoffman whether in a wig as Tootsie or any other role. Streep was already in the spotlight when this guy came belching and slapping his way into Kramer Vrs Kramer.
