In order to clean up the air quality in my woodworking shop, and to remove all the dust I make quickly, I decided to do some shop upgrades. I knew that I needed a new system for my dust removal, so for this workshop video, I show you how I made a high powered dust extraction system. I replaced a large window with a new window liner and smaller windows allowing for two 20" 2 speed fans to be installed. Now I have amazing circulation that removes the sawdust from shop my shop in no time!

After watching this video I got an idea. You have your dust collector and you also have your dust extractor like these for small tools as you know large system is not that great for hand tool dust collecting applications. So, I bought a Kirby vacuum cleaner motor head which has an impeller that is separated from the motor, which has a separate assembly to get cooled. The impeller sucks the dust and within few inches exhausts it to a bag via 3 inch pipe. I’ve removed the bag and connected the three inch hose to a 4 inch hose to my large shop three stage dust extractor with cyclonic action. This way I have one place for all the dust from the small and large tools, none of the filter expense of expensive small systems like festool and other, takes very little space and it’s in-line install setup for under 100 bucks.
There aren’t enough videos like this around. It really will extend your life and more attention should be paid to this subject. No one wants COPD

I did a similar thing for my shop, but with fans blowing into the shop, and air exiting open windows or doors. Then no danger of fans and dust or vapours mixed together and catching fire. I also put in a filter door made with aluminum frame with landscape fabric over it on the the exit door, to catch fine dust and overspray from finishing, credit that idea to my wife, works really well.
Thats a first, never seen someone dump their dust collection bag all over the place on purpose. lol :)
Awesome!! Most of my power tools are Festool hooked up to Festool hepa vacuum. Amazing dust collection. As for my table saw I have the Felder 700s with the overhead dust collection. My dust collector is a Felder RL 160. Better than hepa filter. I know it’s expensive but before it was bothering my lungs and I hate wearing mask. Cheers from Canada. Love your work. :)
I literally sneezed watching you clear out the dust. Good dust collection is clutch in a shop.
I use a similar system in my shop but I do it with my fly closed. Works just as well.

I just made a solid oak sill for a double set of doors I installed. I couldn’t find one anywhere that was a swing out sill. So I made my own. I use to work in a dorms and window shop so it was a blast from the past.
Absolutely love the big mallet you used to put the window frame in place I need one for various purpose going to have to make one soon
I found this is the best way to clean with a blower. The blower just gets it in the air, but your need large volumes to move it out.
This was pretty much our method in the commercial shop I worked at in the 90s except we used repurposed hvac blowers and compressed air. To all the naysayers you'd be surprised at how uneffected equipment can be by being covered in mounds of dust... And I have still yet to meet anyone that had a non-explosive-proof motor explode on account of wood dust.

Hey Brother. First thing out of the way, I think your channel is great. I work in the fire service. I have been inspecting wood shops for fire safety for over 10 years. What you are doing is incredible dangerous. You could easily burn down your shop or worse blow yourself up. If you are willing, I would like to connect offline and give you some safety information that you could share with your viewers.

@@canttReid my guess is lots of floating dust particles (fuel) plus electrical sparks (ignition) could lead to an explosion and fire? Something my woodwork teacher mentioned at school many years ago.

while you are not wrong, typically electric motors only spark when first turned on. Also those fans may also be spark/explosion proof.
@SeaReverie

The spark doesn’t have to come from a motor. A static discharge is over 10,000 degrees. This type of explosion is very common. Please error on the side of safety and not recklessness.

Nicely done! You got there in the end: I've watched just a few videos of yours and have noticed you rarely wear a dust mask (and agree that all of your routing/flattening/sanding creates an insane amount of dust!). This fan setup is sweet to clean the shop, but won't help you stay alive as much as consistently wearing that little mask will.
Sweet dude! Something to upgrade. I've got everything on collection, but there's ALWAYS a ton of dust in the shop anyway.
Making it look easy Samurai!

Ventilation is the best. Does nothing to pick the wood chips off the floor but when it comes to air quality you can't beat it, get one of those airborne dust measuring devices and you'll see what I mean. Problem is any heating or cooling literally goes out the window though...
Nice upgrade :)

I'd like to see what kind of downdraft work table (connected to your dust collector) you could come up with. Sure it would be sweet. What with all the routing you do, probably a better first line of defense. Love your design sense and git er done approach. 💪
it really works! Awesome
Hey, Nice job! Basically I just found your channel.
Hello Samurai Carpenter. Love your videos,, awesome work!! This message is in relation to an Ad I saw earlier today with you in it! The ad is for a rounded diamond cutting wheel for a angle grinder,, and a 3 second flash of when you made the sink (hand basin)out of stone. You were using a angle grinder with a flat cut off or grinding wheel. The ad is a clip of you using the grinder to make your sink. (hand basin). I felt the need to let you know in case the ad people didn't get your permission to use the clip. If you did give permission then good on ya. But just wanted to let you know. I have screenshots of the video and the ad folks if you want or need them. Keep up the great videos! Happy New Year and Cheers from NL!!
But how long did it take to put away or weigh down all the little loose items that blow across the room when you hit them with air?
Thats gonna be great AC in the summer
My Grandpa built homes, furniture and cabinets back around say 1940’s -1960’s. I remember watching him make furniture as a young boy and Grandma reupholster furniture in the next bay. I have her hammer and a piece of furniture he made. Sadly I don’t have a lot of memories but I distinctly remember crying the day my Mom pointed from outside the hospital the room in which my Grandpa was in dying of emphysema. When you talk you can tell your not taking the precautions you should. I hope you wise up before it’s too late.
I’m curious how you sealed those home made window frames. I’m planning to build some custom windows like this myself and can’t decide how to install the glass in the rebates. Thanks!
hope the shop isnt heated :) otherwise its a great plan :)
I think you need just one more fan, lol. Awesome!

This is great! I'll be putting some in my shop. Are they just 120v? And do you notice the dust outside?
That's the only way to do it, it's great! 😎
Anybody else notice his fly down in the outro? Hahaha 😂😂
I do this too only not so refined. I have an overhead door at one end, and a man door at the other. I open both and use the electric leaf blower to blast everything out in the unfinished alley out the overhead door HAHAHAHA!
I'd love to see what it looks like outside 😳😂
Can you please advise what hearing protection you always wear? I can't find any comfortable enough to wear for a long period of time - you seem to have solved that part of the puzzle - thank you.
great vid! Is it important that the fan is sealed all the way around it? I have a window I could sit a fan on when its open to help bring the dust outside but I'm not sure how effective it will be. I plan on using my dust extractor to blow the left over dust towards the window at the end of the day to clear it. (I have a tiny workshop)
Make sure you blow those fan motors out too once in awhile. Had similar 3 phase fan setup...
What were the exact fans used?
Where can I find your tool belt? That thing looks very comfortable.
what about the negative air pressure, just incase it pulls gas in from the furnace or something?
You should make some plans for your toolbox ( not the caddy, The one with greene and greene fingerjoints) And can you order Tasai chisels anywhere? I've looked around online for Tasai chisels and Funahiro handplanes but I can't find em
As a fella who's seen someone put their finger through a plainer that looks EXACTLY like yours it makes my toes curl every time i see you use it... Also, Good stuff... I must have missed something somewhere though as your workspace looks amazing now.

I just re-watched this video trying to look for a mangled finger on him that I missed. I now realize you’re talking about the plainer lol
Could you put some sort of dust bag catch on the outside? Have to keep it outta the rain but might make less of a mess. Great idea tho🤙🏼
Did you ever get your tool harness into production? (I finally found and watched your videos on it's evolution - I love it!) I checked your store and didn't find anything like it there.
Hey Jesse! You should have put the camera further away for it to be able to show the dust escaping out from your shop! That would have been much more interesting. Please share the specs of your fans. I plan to do this too. Thank you!
Awesome !!! , i wonder how cold it gets were your at in the winter ? Cuz the heat lost here in Alberta would be insane
My friend is a medic and she said sawdust is surprisingly bad for the lungs. People think like, oh it's natural it can't be that bad. But it is! Wear protection. Nice move samurai.
When are you going to finish the apartment above the shop?
Outside is just going to be a massive dust bath now, wind blowing dust over the outside of the house, hell of a mess of dust sludge when it rains... Maybe this is useful for an occasional spring clean, but still surely an overhead dust vacuum would be better for day to day dust management?
A question for you. By you accomplishing dust removal from your shop, what about in the colder months using this new process with loosing all of the heat in your shop? What about an air handler on the ceiling with removable filters? Good job.
Man, those fans seriously blow!! :D

Try it, it is quite hard to lit fine dust particles with a spark. I know because I have tried. All the safety regulations are in place because of theorical danger, but In practice the odds are ridiculously low until you hit commercial level of dust movement.

@alain pilon I mean no disrespect, at the time of this reply 93,000 people viewed the video. If only 10% try it, that’s still 9,300 chances. Not every shop will stay up on cleaning, and some will have different materials. You could be right and nothing happens, or you could be wrong and someone could die. Dust ignition exists, that’s why there is explosion proof fan motors and dust collection systems. Why wouldn’t you error on the side of safety? Why risk someone else’s life?
If put two of those fans close to or on floor in the back corners do think it would suck all the dust down and out?
What are your ideas for keeping the shop heated when it’s cold outside, yet dusty in the shop? I experimented with a similar set up as yours but it sucked all the heat out so you’re either dusty or freezing. Just wondering if you’ve worked out an idea to prevent this. Thanks. It could be interesting to have a view outside Your "dust extraction window" ;)

how about humidity and temperature changes?
somehow I knew the leaf blower would come out haha

You could over a great deal of time create those conditions, but he is in a working shop that gets cleaned periodically. Safety Nancy's lol, you guys are why we got a generation with no experience and can't trust to safely complete simple tasks with out getting a booboo, and if the do get a little booboo, they stop working and take few days off.
