Durston X-Mid | Pitching Guide (v2)

Our detailed guide to pitching your X-Mid tent. This video covers all models including the regular, Solid, and Pro series tents in 1P and 2P versions.
The basic pitch is as simple as staking out a rectangle, inserting the two poles and extending them until the canopy is taught, but the pitch guide covers the process in depth including keys for getting a good pitch, how to troubleshoot problems, and some of the many pitch variations that are possible.
The folding method for ensuring a rectangle base was original developed by @kenwebster5053

not only do you make great tents, but the way you respond to criticism, even people being rude or making up lies, is great, you never get angry or petty, you just explain why you did what you did in a polite manner and never talk down to anyone, even the liars, it's something that really stood out to me (along with how much you actually respond to people online about your tents, haven't seen that kind of communication from anyone else)

Hello Dan. I live in Sweden and I bought X-mid 2 p tent with the z-flicks. For 300 dollars its a very affordable tent. It is pretty easy to pitch after watching this very informative video. So far I’m pleased with this tent. Unfortunately the price becomes pretty high since I live in Sweden with customs and tax, actually about 600 dollars but thats not on you, that’s on me, I should have looked that up myself. Anyway, I only have one objection, the tent pegs that comes with the tent are very weak so I guess most people buy others more sturdy ones. Wouldn’t it be better to raise the price a little bit and have quality pegs included instead? The other alternative would be to lower the price and sell it without pegs and make pegs an additional buy? Greetings from Sweden,

I often get comments from experienced hikers asking if my tent is one of Dan's designs. You really don't get that with any other tent on the market. After I bought his first version, I submitted a review with something like a dozen suggestions. Not only did Dan respond, but he also implemented every single suggestion for his second production run. I'll never forget that. On a few occasions, people have asked why Dan's tents are so sought after. This question just begs for a long break-down of Dan's material and design choices and how each one represents the best compromise in tent design. In short, Dan's careful attention to details and experience add up to the most finely tuned general-purpose three-season tent money can buy.

I do too. The material, stitching, strength, and angle of the tarp make it great. However, I feel that it takes some experience, a proper pole, and good use of guy-outs to be secure for winter use here in Canada. It's nothing that can't be easily learned after a few setups, but I'd argue that some of the available alpine tents are more forgiving but at a cost in weight and complexity. With custom carbon poles, a three-point rig on each pole, and a good staking system, the X-mid is so steady you'd struggle to knock it over even if you threw your body at it. @@derekhand7904

You can significantly increase the X-Mid's wind resistance. I use my own multi section carbon tube that also doubles as a walking stick and paddle shaft. I just turn it upside-down and put the loop through a detachable tungsten tip. I then use a three point guy-out from each pole and make sure to use all available factory guy-out points. The tarp should be as low to the ground as possible. Using this configuration, the tent can withstand any storm short of a hurricane. I generally try to avoid getting caught in such conditions, but the tent can be configured to survive harsh weather.

It just replaces whatever walking stick you use. You probably don't need a custom tube. I use them as I tend to hike with a packraft and my tent pole also works as a paddle shaft and walking stick. Of course, a multi-section carbon tube will be much stronger than walking poles, so you can run guylines so tight that you'd struggle to even push over the tent. The important part is to run two additional guylines out from each peak. That alone will add significant resistance to winds. When in doubt, guy-it out, lol.@@neilquinn

Did not realize you could tie off part of the vestable to one the stake points to open the sides of tent for even more ventilation/views. This makes the 4 stake pitch significantly more usable in my opinion. Otherwise you just had part of the vestibule flapping in the wind unless it was staked down. Im very excited to try this out and refine my pitch. Thank you for this video that I didn't even realize I needed!

I own a MLD shelter and came to dread setting it up at the end of a hard day on the trail. It went up quick, but was nearly always proceeded by 20 minutes fiddling with guy lines to achieve balance and avoid consistently sagging lines got tired very quickly, even more so in wind and rain. So, I splurged on an Xmid Pro2, and the contrast is night and day, I can't believe a) how easy it was to pitch b) how much more room I'm getting for the footprint or c) how much more sturdy the tent is. As others have said, Dan's customer service is first-rate, and the way he handles people is a rare, refreshing and very welcome thing to see. Ron Bell at MLD - customer service - please take note.

I saved this video. It’s so perfect and I love how you can change it up. Need to learn those. Last week I camped and left tent while I hiked for the day. It started raining and rained for hours but I had no choice but continue my hike. When I got back the sides were all pulled out like in the video. Also cause it had rained all day rain was splashing back on the sides of my inner tent. I could feel the water on the inside of the net. Nothing was wet on the inside. Not sure if it would stay that way. I had put the tent as low as I could as rain was in forecast. It was as low as it could go with the land I was dealing with. I need to go practice more on getting these tips and tricks mastered. Or at least better. I’ve been hiking for years and wanted to add backpacking in. I do love my solid mid 1 person tent. I’m definitely learning and appreciate all that was in this video. Thank you Dan!!❤

I pitched my Xmid 2p for the first time this weekend on a camping trip. Generally I try to set it up at home first but I didn't have a chance to do that. I did struggle with understanding which way things went but in the end I figured it out. I'll pitch a few more times at home to get used to it, but one thing that might make it easier is color coding one clip/ chord so they match. This might make things a little quicker for those of us who were silly enough not set it up at home first. But overall this was the best tent I have ever used. At 6'2 I always buy two person tents because the one persons are always too small. However, this tent was incredibly large for a two person tent. I have now added the 1P pro to my bucket list because I'm confident I would fit easily. Keep up the great work Dan I look forward to more innovations in the future.

Thanks for the kind words. Yes I try to make my tents a good size, so the 2P is nicely sized for two which can mean that it is overkill for 1. The X-Mid Pro 1 is a super nice tent and very spacious for a 1P tent. I think it's the largest 1P tent on the market by interior volume.

Hi Dan, this really is an outstanding video, thank you for your time and effort. When I am using a tent its so easy to see that the people who designed it are never using it in the real world.. You however know this tent inside out regarding all the practical real world characteristics. The detail you demonstrated regarding pitching and the various set ups was way beyond what I was familiar with or had seen before...I will include a link to this video in the description of my videos. Its really is great to see you out living your fantastic products which very few other manufactures do... Best wishes and no need to respond. I would rather you were producing more content like this and making an X - Mid Pro solid.... Tom

Hey Dan. I've been using my xmid pro 1 quite a bit this year. One thing I think people should know is that it doesn't need to be 100% perfect. A little sag here or flop there is fine as long as the weather isn't going to be miserable. I recommend the xmids to anyone looking for a trekking pole tent. Setup is quick and easy. Only issue I've had is one of the loops on the bathtub floor that attaches to the trekking pole came off. My trekking poles were set too tall and I 100% pulled on it too hard trying to get the pole into the loop. It was dark and I was exhausted. Honestly though it barely affects the bathtub width. Going to look into a glue to attach it back on.

Yeah good point. It's easy to get obsessed with the perfect pitch but almost never needed. We can sew that tab back on for you if you want. They're not designed to take a lot of force but we did get some reports of them being torn off, so we are making them stronger now.

Can confirm that the first time I used it on my thru-hike, I pitched it up absolutely miserably (it was quite windy and I had only pitched it up once before with no wind at all). I was fully expecting it to blow away overnight (again, we’re talking quite strong wind and truly disastrous pitch here), but guess what, it was still standing in the morning ! Gave me more confidence in it to know it would survive decent wind even when badly pitched (to a certain limit, I still got a stake pulled out another time because I messed up again, but I honestly didn’t expect it to be so forgiving).
