It REALLY did! It was such an exciting time to watch MTV videos. Younger generations today don't seem to get that. Imagine if you had never seen your favorite bands outside of playing a few TV performances like on Top of the Pops or American Bandstand, and then VOILA! MTV appears - 24 HOURS A DAY of your favorite bands, not just replaying concert footage, but actually ACTING out the storylines in their songs! It was monumental for the time. I was a preteen living in the Midwest, so this was the most amazing thing I had ever seen at the time. Even more amazing is how now in 2021 we can rewatch the original videos anytime we want and interact with other fans and the band in real time chat! I really think the younger generations take this for granted. When I was a kid and a teen, we had to literally write REAL letters to the band and mail it to the band fan club! We were lucky to get a response, and if we did, we usually got an autographed poster and other collectibles.

Simon Le Bon, Nick (Bates- his real surname. He called himself Rhodes because of the Rhodes synthesizer he played) Roger Taylor. "(BANG A GONG) GET IT ON" "COMMUNICATION" "SOME LIKE IT HOT" "HARVEST FOR THE WORLD"- An Isley Brothers cover. Andy shares lead vocals with Robert Palmer. "STILL IN YOUR HEART". All from the splinter group The Power Station. John Taylor, Andy Taylor, Robert Palmer (RIP) and Chic drummer Tony Thompson (RIP) Also: "I Do What I Do (To Have You)"- John Taylor solo project from the soundtrack of the Mickey Rourke/Kim Basinger movie 9 1/2 Weeks. "Take It Easy"- Andy Taylor solo project from the soundtrack of the film American Anthem starring 1984 Gold Medal gymnast Mitch Gaylord and Janet Jones ( Mrs. Wayne Gretzky). Andy was also featured on the Belinda Carlyle(sp) song "Mad About You". He was in the video and did the guitar solo. Oh yes baby, I was a big Duranie!!!

@@tylergirl1970 , lot's of ghost notes, about every other note. It's fast, difficult because it's repetitive, but it's not too hard, as most of it is in power chord shapes. It's one of my favorite bass lines to play. Hold Back the Rain is very similar and from that same period, and Late Bar is as well. John's writing style and playing style at that time ( for faster songs ) was to fill a song up, lots of percussive things going on. He became more of a pocket player after Seven and the Ragged Tiger LP. I'm a huge John Taylor and DD fan, love playing about everything they did on guitar, bass, and synths. Wish I could sing though. lol

Great work! 🙌 This is the videoest of videos. The bass god is John Taylor and back then a good number of us had our weddings to him all planned out. Even if we were still in elementary school. The drummer is the one who got bit by the crab, Roger Taylor. Andy Taylor, the guitarist, was sent overboard. (foreshadowing) Nick Rhodes, keyboardist, is the photographer and stalkee. And our ship's captain is our frontman and our beacon through this dark world, Mr. Simon Le Bon. Thanks sooooo much for reacting to this. 🙏 p.s. the guys were just pretending to play the sax. The guy they usually worked with, Andy Hamilton, isn't in the video.

The guy in the burgundy pants pretending to play the saxophone is the bassist John Taylor one of the founding fathers for this band. The guy thrown overboard is Andy Taylor the guitarist. The guy caught up in the net is the drummer Roger Taylor. The guy lounging in the cabin as the girls creeps by is the other Co founding father of the band; the keyboardist Nick Rhodes, and of course the blonde singing lead is Simon LeBon. They were called the second British wave (the Beatles being the first) when they came to the U.S. There was never anyone who sounded like them then and there never will be. I am definitely a Durannie (long time fan).

That sax break is one of the best of all time. Those guy were heavily into funk and soul like Chic and Roxy Music so they were willing to incorporate sax along with John Taylor's those super funky bass lines. It was inevitable that they eventually got Nile Rodgers to produce an album.

While they were busy selling an image with these videoclips, the quality of the songs was massively underrated by a lot of ppl back in the day. The clips were slick and attracted mostly a female teen audience at their concerts. That's why they were frowned upon by the more serious press and music lovers.

Im into sailing so I always loved this video. This boat is a vintage beauty. Its a "Ketch" style yacht named Eilean that was built in 1936. The boat was sailed under many different owners over the next 5 decades. In 2006, Italian watchmaker Panera saw her in an English channel in a sad state of disrepair. Instantly recognizing her from Duran Duran videos Panera bought her and arranged for her to be completely restored. She was re-launched in 2009 as part of an advertising campaign for Panera. In 2012, some original members of Duran Duran were present when Eilean was featured in the classic yacht regatta in Antigua. They wept as she sailed across the finish line in all her original glory.

Russell Mulcahy directed the Rio video, and you're absolutely right -- it's totally emblematic of the look of music videos from the early '80s. In fact, Mulcahy may be one of the people most responsible for how we think of this period of pop culture visually. In addition to many other Duran Duran videos (including Hungry Like the Wolf, Save a Prayer, Girls on Film, The Reflex, and more), he also directed videos for Ultravox (Vienna, most famously), Spandau Ballet, Icehouse, Kim Carnes, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Fleetwood Mac, Culture Club, Queen, and more. His style was very distinctive and highly influential.
